How Long Would It Take To Rebuild A Push Mower

How to fix lawn mower burning oil? Or just let it go?

I have a Craftsman 917.388521 mower with a 6.5 HP Briggs and Straton engine: 123K02-0258-E1.

I've had it for about 7 years and it's always run great. However, recently I noticed the oil quickly blackens, and I have to top it off every few mowings. When I first start it, white smoke will come out of the muffler for about 15-30 seconds, then it's no longer noticeable.

If I open the oil filler/dipstick right after the engine turns off, there'll be a little bit of white smoke that comes up the filler tube.

There doesn't seem to be any real performance hit just yet, but it does sputter or misfire (just a put) about once every 45 seconds (even with a brand new spark plug) - it's never done this before.

I've read that the problem is probably worn piston rings - can anyone confirm or offer alternative possibilities? Also is it worth fixing now (if I can do the work myself), or is it better to just maintain the lawnmower until it dies and buy a new one?

Push Mower starts, runs 15 minutes then dies?

You already have the clue in the BULB.

This happen to me this year.
Same symptom. the mower will run for a while then stop. If i let the mower sit for awhile or open the gas cap or fiddle with it , it will run again for a while then stop.

I open everything. clean up and rebuilt the carburator, Same thing .

Until i noticed even with the carburator un hooked , the fuel line doenot drip gasoline. and as soon as i open the gas cap the gasoline pour out thru the gas line.

The Gas cap has a venting mechanism. If the venting mechanism is blocked or fell out. there is no way to vent and no way to let air in as gasoline is being used in the mower.

You did notice the bulb get suck in did you ?

Run the mower without the gas cap and see what happen.
If it keep on running without dying. Presto . change the gas cap.

Hope this help

My murray 22inch push mower won't start?

Check your plugs and your air filter. It maybe clogged with debris. Then use a carberator cleaner to clean the carb. That should do the trick.
Take care and God Bless.

Why my push lawn mower starts only with the air filter off?

At first, I thought it must be the dirty air filter. I have cleaned the foam air filter (appears in good shape) with gasoline, and then later with washing detergent. Both times, the mower did not start after the air filter container was screwed back on. And, every time, the mower starts with the air filter container OFF.

It appears not the carburetor problem. Yesterday, I used an air spray carburetor cleaner to clean the carburetor, and it did not help.

The mower is 23 yrs old, if that matters.

Why? Thanks

Why is my lawn mower blowing white smoke?

I’m going to give you ideas for a push type mower - small vertical shaft, 4 cycle engine.1. A lot of white smoke. Too much oil in the engine. Pull the dipstick and wipe it off with a paper towel/rag. Reinsert it, wait 5 seconds and the remove it. The proper oil level should when the oil in between the two marks on the end of the dip stick. If there is too much oil, change the oil and put in the correct amount based on your operators manual. (usually about 20 oz)2. Going up or down too steep a hill. If the oil is at the right level and the hill is too steep the oil may get into the cylinder/piston area and blow past the piston rings. This will cause white smoke and will quit when the engine is back on level.3. You engine is just wore out. If the smoke is more blue that pure white the engine may just be tired and needs to rebuilt or replaced. Check with your local mechanic to be sure.

Why would a Toro lawn mower won't keep running?

This Toro Personal Pace lawn mower was left with fuel for a year or two. I cleaned the carburetor, replaced the oil, replaced the spark plug, checked the air filter, and put new gas. When I use starting fluid or prime 5-10 times, it starts. But it won't keep running. It dies after few seconds.

What could be the problem? Please help!

I greatly appreciate it.

Who makes the best lawnmower engine?

Rhetorical question: Are you going to take *care* of the engine?Because if you’re not, it doesn’t matter what engine you get it won’t last very long.IMHO, Briggs & Stratton pretty much rules the roost and is the engine I look for powering my yard and lawn equipment. While their engines may not be the tip of the cutting edge, they are dirt simple, all day reliable and parts are readily available.Briggs & Stratton has been making small engines since 1908 …110 years by my public school math. It’s an American company and still makes their engines here in the USA.The 3.5HP Briggs in my Snapper push mower passed the 25 year mark a couple years back. It still runs strong and starts on the second or third pull from cold. The only thing it’s suffering from are slightly worn valve guides which manifests itself with a bit of white smoke on a cold start. The reason it’s lasted so long is I take care of it …the point of asking the question at the beginning of my answer. I change the oil, use WalMart SuperTech synthetic with a dash of STP. The fuel I feed it is a cocktail laced with StaBil fuel preservative and Marvel Mystery oil. It gets deep cleaned before each season and a fresh air cleaner is installed. I’ve rebuilt the carb a few times (ethanol is hell on fuel systems). I don’t consider what I do excessive or fussy …really just the normal maintenance any small engine operating in a harsh environment needs in order to survive.
