How Low Can Your Blood Pressure Be Before You Are Unable To Donate Blood

Is 98/44 an okay blood pressure, or is that too low?

I also have blood pressure like yours, but I don't get dizzy....my doctor said as long as I'm not weak or dizzy, there was nothing to be concerned about.
Since you are experiencing dizziness, I would ask your doctor about this. He/she might tell you to increase your sodium levels.

Can you donate blood if you have really low blood pressure?

I don't know your age but this blood pressure reading is what a healthy preschooler's would read. Are you pretty thin...I don't mean to pry...but this is very low, and they would definately not let you donate blood. You also would have trouble at the dentist office if you ever had to have work done. This is just a known fact. I went to have work done and my diastolic (bottom number) was pretty low that day and they had to cancel my appointment to protect their practice and myself. Your systolic and diastolic is extremely low. Its just not safe to even be giving blood when you don't have adequate pressure.

****Hmm that info is interesting. Great job on having those babies! I bet it would be quite annoying getting dizzy all the time. This is the first time I've met someone that has a bp this low. Did they ever tell you that a preschooler's normal bp is 80/50? I'm sure you've heard that. It sounds like you are trying to be helpful by donating but you just can't do that you have to save it for you're own good. I have mild Tourettes Syndrome so there's things I have to face too, like, I can never be a neurosurgeon. ;)

Would Valium lower my blood pressure temporarily?

Valium is not prescribed for blood pressure and does not work directly on blood pressure. Valium at normal doses causes a person to relax, which lowers the pulse rate in people that have anxiety or who are under stress. A lower pulse rate causes blood pressure to decrease. In people without anxiety or stress, Valium has little effect on blood pressure unless taken at a higher dosage. The problem with taking higher doses is that the effects are unpredictable and they can vary from one time to another. So, it might help a little, but just walking for 20 minutes a day and cutting out salt from the diet can do more than Valium.

If I donate blood with a higher blood pressure, will the procedure take less time?

Juhi Puri has a good anatomical answer!Mine is from experience.I used to work in a blood bank, and two of the donors used to measure the time they took to fill the 450mL.One of them told me that he once ran up and down the stairs before donation to get the blood pressure up. The time he spent donating 450mL was unaffected. Two things that would have a greater effect (again, from experience), is how much you squeeze the ball you're given, and the height difference between the chair (your body/arm) and the bag you're donating into.We raised all the chairs in the blood bank, and from what we could tell, the average time went down.I also have a (stupid) competition against myself to break my own "record". I raise the chair and pump that ball like crazy. I', actually not sure about it right now, but i think my record was around 4,5 minutes.

Why does my blood clot when I donate blood?

Although another poster mentioned anemia as a possible cause, blood donors must have a hematocrit (blood iron) of 38 or higher to donate. Your hematocrit is checked via a fingerstick before you give blood. Normal female HCT is 35-45, so if you were allowed to donate blood your HCT is fine.

Dehydration can indeed cause this to happen, but usually not twice in a row.

You don't mention your age, health status, or medications. I see from a previous Question you have taken birth control pills for over 20 years and have just finished taking antibiotics for an infection.

You may want to schedule an appointment with your physician and discuss with him/her what's happening when you donate blood. The blood bank is not allowed to evaluate, diagnose, or even suggest that you might have a health problem, but the screening they provide can help you go to your physician for further help.

I am a platelet donor and have been donating blood for 20+ years. Please see your physician with this concern; there are many, many reasons your blood may be clotting improperly.

Is it worth it to donate blood for money?

Yes, it is worth it to sell your blood for money, if you are a college student struggling to get by.In the US, it is illegal to be paid to give blood for transfusion. Of course, you will get cookies and juice, not so much as a gift than to provide you with a little sugar to help prevent you from passing out, although a unit of blood is roughly a tenth of your blood volume, and your circulatory system can rapidly adjust to maintain your blood pressure. You can donate whole blood every eight weeks. When you sell your blood for money, you are actually giving plasma, the liquid part of blood. The procedure is as follows:· A unit of blood will be drawn.· The unit is centrifuged, and the plasma is taken off.· The red cells are returned to you.· The process is repeated a second time. This procedure can be repeated three times a week. The plasma is processed for the production of reagents for use in blood banks. It is NOT transfused. The reason for the discrepancy is that plasma is mostly liquid with various other substances, and the body can replace these quickly. On the other hand, new red blood cells don’t even begin to be released from your bone marrow for 5-7 days after an acute blood loss, and much longer for the entire unit to be replaced.Selling your blood will not make you rich, but if you are having trouble getting by, it will put a few dollars in your pocket.
