How Low Is Too Low For Total Cholesterol

TOTAL CHOLESTEROL too low?

Hypolipidemia is defined as a total cholesterol (TC) < 120 mg/dL (< 3.1 mmol/L) or low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol < 50 mg/dL (< 0.13 mmol/L). Secondary causes are far more common than primary causes and include all of the following:--
* Hyperthyroidism
* Chronic infections and other inflammatory states
* Hematologic and other cancers
* Undernutrition (including that accompanying chronic alcohol use)
* Malabsorption
Treatment of primary hypolipidemia is often unnecessary, but patients with some genetic disorders require high-dose vitamin E and dietary supplementation of fats and other fat-soluble vitamins.

My total cholesterol is 108.....is that too low?

I am 16 years old (female) and i recently got tested for my cholesterol at winn-dixie. (winn-dixie was doing a free diabeties and cholesterol testing.) my diabeties number was good but my cholesterol number was 108. the person giving the test told me that was a little low. i read on the internet that your total cholesterol should be between 150-200. a week ago, i did become a pescatarian. (vegetarian but i eat dairy and fish) i don't know if that has anything to do with it. i have for about a year been feeling like i'm in a constant dream almost. like i'm looking from the outside in and my mom said that is a sign of hypoglycemia since she had that same problem. so, i started eating only healthy stuff and i still feel the same. my memory is bad and i can barely tell the difference between a dream and a memory of even something that happened yesterday. after eating sugar, i would black out a little when i would stand back up from sitting down. i just wanted to know if this low cholesterol number has anything to do with hypoglycemia or something. is this number really that bad? why do i feel like i'm in some dream all the time. and i'm always tired even after only eating healthy. thank you for your help! :)

Can Total Cholesterol Levels Be Too Low?

Do not believe those that say there are any benefit to lowering your cholesterol. Cholesterol is not the cause of heart disease. A study just completed in China found that LDL that was either higher or LOWER than 126 was associated with increased risk of cancer. Your LDL will be in the range associated with a 50% increase. Cholesterol is vital to every cell in your body. Did you know that cholesterol is never eliminated, just recycled? It is that important. Many studies have shown that increased cholesterol levels are associated with living longer. This becomes more evident with increased age.

Do you think my total cholesterol is too low?

I just got tested and my HDL was at 44, LDL was at 71, and Triglycerides were at 54. My total cholesterol was 126. I read some articles implying that any cholesterol level below 150 is considered too low and unhealthy but I have also read some articles that imply that these type of levels are fine as long as the total cholesterol/HDL ratio is below 3.5. My ratio was 2.9. I understand that HDL levels above 40 are okay but levels at 60 are optimal. My doctor said my cholesterol levels were good, but I am worried that my total cholesterol may be too low because of some of the articles I read on the internet. Do you think my total cholesterol is too low?

How low is too low for cholesterol?

My Stats:
Total: LDL = 35, HDL = 70, Triglycerides = 82, 'Total' Chol.= 121

"According to the American Heart Association, you should keep your cholesterol ratio at or below 5:1. The ideal cholesterol ratio is about 3.5:1."

Mine is (121/70) = 1.7:1

I am mid-30s, healthy, and I exercise regularly by taking long, fast walks with some jogging. I recently dropped ALOT of weight, but I know that my total cholesterol has always been on the low side of good even when I was overweight. I don't eat meat or fowl, but I eat fish, dairy, and eggs (not too often, maybe 2/week). My doctor didn't think much of the low score and said I was free to eat high cholesterol foods if I wanted.

The web says there was a study linking low cholesterol to depression, but there isn't much else, and one study does not make for absolute truth.

Anyone have any reliable information about this?

If I have high total cholesterol (225) but also have high HDL & low triglycerides, do I need to worry?

Generally no. The high HDL is part of the high total cholesterol. Plus, high HDL has a protective effect on the heart. There are other factors to consider, of course, but this is the most current recommendations.

Is 119 cholesterol level too low?

If you mean total cholesterol the normal limits are between 100-199 Mg's.

If you mean HDL (healthy or good cholesterol) any number above 59 Mg's is considered normal.

If you mean LDL (Bad cholesterol) normal limits are 0-99 Mg's.

You seem fine but any questions related to this in the future should be directed to your health care professional
