Why is there so much support for Rodrigo Duterte in the Philippines?

To answer the question anyway, the general consensus among the supporters are:The change in Davao City from one of the most dangerous places to one of the safest is impressive.He has made hard choices for the sake of protecting the majority. For example, he banned smoking in his city (only with few designated smoking areas), even though smokers would find this a hassle. Some people compare his style with Singapore's Lee Kuan Yew (not exactly the same, but you get the point), and many Singaporeans are thankful of their Prime Minister.Many people are tired of the traditional profile of the topmost politicians: eloquent and mostly politically correct when speaking and do not publicly admit whatever would hurt their image, but do not produce the results that correspond to their words. They cannot claim a significant tangible result similar to Rodrigo Duterte's transformation of Davao City. Most of them (except Miriam Defensor-Santiago) are also known to participate in corruption. People would rather compromise with the honest and transparent leader with altruistic intent.He is known to stick to his own principles. He refused to apologize to GABRIELA Women's Party for a rape joke, even though apologizing to them could have improved his image (He apologized to the entire population but refused to apologize to a particular party).He is transparent. Early on, he announced himself a personal information that his detractors would surely take advantage of: that he has two girlfriends.He has a simple lifestyle despite being a Mayor -- he even uses a dumbphone and wears simple clothes. This is the polar opposite of the former first lady Imelda Marcos with thousands of shoes.
