What American city could be hit by an earthquake?

An answer is difficult to give because of the phrase “hit by an earthquake”; some American cities would suffer severe damage whereas others would feel some shaking and maybe some items thrown to the floor. At the most severe end I would put San Francisco which suffered the 1906 earthquake on the San Andreas fault. Few cities anywhere are built on an active fault. The Hayward fault, which runs through Oakland and has several feet of seismic offset just west of Berkeley is another candidate for an any day now large quake equal or greater than the 1886 M6.8 earthquake. And LA and surrounding metropoli sit on or near any number of active faults. The 1964 M9.2 Alaska earthquake, about 70 miles west of Anchorage was hugely destructive and occurred in a geologic setting prone to future large earthquakes. Recent geologic studies indicate that Seattle is in a very hazardous seismic area. Other than that, the record is thin. A Magnitude 8.6–7.0 quake hit Charleston SC in 1886, and Boston was severely shaken by the 1755 Cape Ann Earthquake. The Mississippi Valley in the vicinity of Cape Girardeau, and the Wabash River Valley experience many recurrent moderate earthquakes. These eastern/midwesteern earthquakes are difficult to understand because they are not associated with any known large tectonic faults. Even the very large 1811–1812 New Madrid earthquakes are controversial: At least one seismologist thinks they will never recur because the stress levels in the area are too low, but others think they might recur within 500 or so years. In any event, west coast/pacific margin size earthquakes. Are very unlikely to hit any American midwest and east coast cities.

Do pilots or flight attendants ever get scared in flight?

Two quick personal incidents; I flew with a lovely Spanish girl called Marta. One atrocious night we flew through a lightning storm on route to Paris. The plane was damaged and we landed quickly after. Of course before we landed we were told by the flight deck to prepare for landing immediately and cease food and beverage service. There were only two of us preparing the cabin when there should have been three (it was a Bae 146 so very small plane) and we noticed Marta was missing so we stowed the cart and went to check to see if she was in the rear bathrooms. Instead we find her strapped fully into her crew seat, sat bolt upright in our ‘emergency brace position’. She was terrified. When she landed at our home port she resigned.Tale 2. I was ‘paxing’ (not working the flight but going to a destination as a passenger in order to operate the return sector back) along with a first officer in seats behind the wing on a small aircraft. We were cordially chatting and I was facing him and the window as I spoke, and he was facing me so didn't have a view out of the window. Coming into land I abruptly I stopped mid- sentence and according to him I went white as a sheet (I’m black)- after flying for a while you know pretty much by sound and feel when the wheels are about to touch the tarmac, problem was we were about to land but as I looked out of the window I could see way more tarmac than I should have been able to. This meant that the wing we were sat behind was tipped too far toward the ground, and if you want to see what happens when an aircraft wing hits the ground in-flight just go on Youtube. Needless to say, after passenger disembarkation, I went to the flight deck to ask what the hell just nearly happened, but I didn’t need to say a thing; the captain was drip white and shaking like a leaf.Yeah, they’re humans, they get scared.
