How many animes do you have to watch to become an otaku?

If you actually understand the meaning of otaku without looking it up, and you did not have training in Japanese, you are one.You become an otaku, used in an endearing meaning as a hardcore fan, once anime routinely enters your list of choices of “what should I watch right now’. You probably don't want to get to Hikikomori - Wikipedia condition. ;)It is more about consistency of choosing anime over other forms of entertainment. As you plunge deeper, you start to identify common tropes. Eventually, some anime gets you unusually hooked and you start to research what got you Spirited Away Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi. For me, that was Glass no Kamen (2005), at least its early episodes.I consider choosing to watch subtitles over listening to dubbed audio as a strong indicator. You may get to the point where Japanese becomes a language you understand. Anime functions as a form of immersion language training. Of course, there is an anime about that Gate: Jieitai Kanochi nite, Kaku Tatakaeri. I had an epiphany once realized the subs I was watching were not matched correctly. Recently, while talking with a Japanese girl whose English wasn't good, I used Japanese words to help explain what I meant. The only other time I had such epiphany when I realized I could actually understand everything on Windows blue screen of death and that I knew how to use a kernel debugger. I acquired that skill while learning something else.If your list of watched anime includes Shirobako (anime production, very interesting) or Sore ga Seiyuu! (voice acting, she starts out very awful, which is hard to fake as a pro) or Koe de Oshigoto! The Animation (sexually explicit voice acting, you were warned), Bakuman (manga publishing, with realistic timelines like “take 6 months”) and similar titles, you definitely are an otaku.

How many series do you need to see to be an Otaku?

Otaku is a Japanese term used to describe people who live for Anime and Manga, and have no social life outside of it. They are heavily looked down upon, since they often do not contribute to society. It is not an honor to be called an otaku, it is the opposite. To be an otaku, you don't spend any time outside of your home, other than absolutely necessary time, and buying figures or new shows/books, and even that you can do from home now. Sometimes you don't even have a job, and can get away with never leaving your house.Otakus are depressing, considered lowlifes in Japanese society. I'd even go so far as to say that if you're not Japanese, or at least living in Japan, you cannot be called an otaku. A more fitting term for a Westerner who wants to be called otaku would be a weeaboo.Thats not to say that liking anime is bad, or a purely Japanese thing - they have dubs and subs for a reason, and tons of regular people like anime too. It's just that otaku are weird. You have every right to partake in Japanese culture, but understand terms before you use them. You do not want to be otaku. If you like Vocaloid (mainstream and sort of a weeaboo thing, but I don’t care), I believe there's a song by Kaito called something along the lines of “My Girlfriend Discovered I’m an Otaku!!!” that demonstrates the negative view Japan has of otaku.

How many anime and manga fans are there in the world?

Let’s find out.If we go to Google Keyword Planner, Google tells us 1–10 million people search for anime on a monthly basis (if you can see it). Also, Google claims for topics related to anime, around 10M to 100M (million) people search for anime EVERY MONTH.And if you search manga, it also has around 1M - 10M monthly Google searches. On Instagram there are over 58 million hashtags for the topic of “anime”.And around 25 million for “Manga”On Facebook there are multiple groups with 200 - 750,000 anime fans.An app called Amino has around 710,000+ reviews, and about 5M - 10M downloads/installs. And more importantly, one of their anime groups has around 1M users. Now, this might not be the most helpful way to find out how many anime and manga fans are in the world. But if there are 10M - 100M people searching for anime on Google, every month. On top of all the other numbers across social networks, we can at least say that anime & manga has well over 10M fans all over the world. But it’s probably somewhere around 50 million. And if you add how many anime fans there are offline who may not have an internet connection (yes, the whole world isn’t online yet) then it’s even more believable to be at least in the multi-millions.And let’s not forget - Manga like “One Piece” sell multi millions of copies almost on a yearly basis. Or whenever there’s a new release. So it’s not too far-fetched.

Do Japanese get tired of the Western obsession with Otaku?

Mmmm, I don’t think the Japanese are much aware that foreigners are obsessed by Otaku. If they do, they certainly don’t care.I know that a lot of Japanese women are less than happy with Japanese men living in their gadget-dominated worlds and not being interested in them (one of the reasons many Otaku never or rarely have sex).According to the Japan Times, a new survey of Japanese people ages 18 to 34 found that 70 percent of unmarried men and 60 percent of unmarried women are not in a relationship. It gets worse: Around 42 percent of men and 44.2 percent of women admitted that they were virgins (of course not all of them are Otaku!).A booming industry surrounds Japan's growing condition of loneliness, a phenomenon at once quite particular to the Japanese, yet also a glimpse into a future where many people live atomized lives mediated exclusively through personal technology.
