How many states in india?
RecklessRon gave a full reply. But, don't you think spellings do matter when reading proper names (of cities in particular)? That is why I give here corrections. 1. for "Ranji" read "Ranchi" [11. Jharkhand] 2. for "Gangtong" read "Gangtok" [23. Sikkim] 3. for "Laknow" read "Lucknow" [26. Uttar Pradesh] 4. for "Tehradon" read "Dehra Dun" [27. Uttarakhand] Haryana & Punjab (entry No.8) are separate states. Funnily, they both don't have capitals in their territories but in "Chandigarh" that is between them both. Chandigarh is a Union territory that has its own administration. Chandigarh is a small city that was built in 1950s; designed by the famous architect & town planner, Le Corbusier (France).
