How Many Years To Become A Civil Lawyer

What should I major in to become a civil rights lawyer?

Usually I don't recommend political science for prospective law students as it's usually not the best choice, but as a background for civil rights law it's as good an option as any. Other good choices would be history or Af-Am studies (or other groups who have participated in various civil rights movements), along with other choices that are almost always good bets for law school like economics, math, and the hard sciences. But you can major in pretty much anything and be admitted to law school.

Please do your research about law school and post-grad job opportunities before you pick a major solely for the purpose of attending law school. There are very, very few "civil rights lawyer" positions out there, and generally they go to top litigators from top firms, who graduated at the top of their respective classes from top schools to get jobs at those firms. You should major in something you enjoy and if you do choose to attend law school, go into the whole process with your eyes wide open.

1. How do you become a lawyer in the UK and how long does it take? 2. How do you become a lawyer in the US?

In the UK, firstly, there are two (major) legal proffessions, not one, Barristers and Solicitors, and each follows a slightly different course of training.
Law in the UK is a three year undergraduate degree. It teaches essentially theoretical law (not civil or criminal proceedure, or lawyer's ethics or practical skills).
After the degree, each profession has its own "vocational" course: the Bar Vocational Course for Barristers and the Legal Practice Course for solicitors. They each teach different material and are differently assessed.
After the vocational stage prospective lawyers have to secure a kind of apprenticeship with an established firm or chambers - training contract for solicitors and pupillage for Barristers. Pupillages are much harder to come by but last only 1 year and involve work on ones own account after 6 months. Training contracts last two years.
So, a successful law student would take 5 or 6 years to qualify depending on profession and assuming no time out.

The US system is simpler (and longer)- 4 year undergrad degree, 3 year post grad law degree followed by the bar exam for whichever state you intend to practice in. That's where it gets more complicated, with the varying laws and reciprocal arrangements of different states.

In the UK there are only fewer different jurisdictions, the bulk of legal working being under the laws of England and Wales.
