How Many Years To Get A Masters In Physics And How Many For A Doctorate

How many years does it take to get a PhD after you get a masters?

It took me 4.5 years.I have an MS degree from same univ. where I received my PhD. 30 credit hours of course work from my MS was transferred towards my PhD program. My PhD required a total of 90 credits including Doctoral Research and Dissertation Credits.Ideally, it should take only about 3.5 years to complete a PhD after a master’s degree. But usually it doesn't happen as expected. It is usually because of other requirements besides just courses and research credits. Some of my College and Department’s requirements were :3.33/4.0 GPA in all the core courses before taking qualifying exam.Comprehensive qualifying exam with =>75% score. (2 courses)Research competency exam (random Research topic to investigate for a month, presentation and oral question/answer)Doctoral Proposal Defense ExamDoctoral Dissertation Defense Exam and writing submission.Others: supervisor’s demand to publish in conference/journal papers, Teaching duties. These requirements need planning, numerous meetings, discussion and core research progress in given time.4–5 years is considered standard for Electrical Engg., Computer Engineering, Computer Science etc.Good Luck.

Can someone explain: Masters, PhD, and Doctorate? ?

PhD=Doctorate

PhD is a type of doctorate

Levels basically go:
Associates
Bachelors
Masters
Doctorate/PhD (PhD is used for certain subjects... there are other types of Doctorates)

How many years does it take to get a PhD in Physics in England?

Why Oxford? Cambridge is SO much better! (Okay, I graduated from Cambridge so I HAD to say that.)

Seriously. Oxford has a terrific physics program. You should start by exploring their website: http://www.physics.ox.ac.uk/

They have two main courses: a 3-yr BA and a 4-yr MPhys. If you are planning to go on for a PhD, you'll probably want the MPhys course.

Now, in England, studies after you earn your undergraduate degree are known as post-grad, not graduate studies. Oxford does not offer a taught post-grad physics degree. You enroll as a PRS (probationary research student) after completing the MPhys. After you complete the first year requirements, you transfer to the status of a D.Phil. student (equivalent of a Ph.D).

The Oxford Physics program has six "sub departments," most of which offer postgraduate study:
- Atomic & Laser Physics
- Astrophysics
- Condensed Matter Physics
- Theoretical Physics
- Particle Physics
- Atmospheric Oceanic and Planetary Physics

You also need to look at the admission requirements for international students. US students applying to Oxford must have the following:

SAT 1 scores of at least 1,400 in Critical Reading and Mathematics and preferably also 700 or more in the new Writing Paper, giving a combined score of at least 2,100. OR ACT with a score of at least 32 out of 36.
AND
Grade 5 in three or more Advanced Placement tests in appropriate subjects OR SAT II in three appropriate subjects at 700 or better.

In addition, there may be some specific subject requirements for applying to the physics program.

You need to look at Oxford's web site for information on international applications: http://www.ox.ac.uk/admissions/undergrad...

In any case, good luck! I spent four years at Cambridge doing an MPhil and PhD and had an amazing time.

How long would it take to get a doctorate in physics or chemistry?

In the US, if you start counting from the point where you complete the bachelor’s degree, it usually takes 5–6 years. Sometimes as little as 4 if you are doing a theoretical dissertation. Sometimes 7 or more if you are in an experimental field that requires you to build your own instrument or otherwise involves lengthy or complicated preparation for gathering data.

How many years of college does it take to become a nuclear physicist?

If you want to work for a nuclear power plant, you can do that with a 4-year physics degree (bachelors). At the undergrad level, you don't specialize, you just get a physics degree. If you want to do nuclear physics research, you'll need a PhD for that - that's 8-12 years total. You'll major in physics and then go to grad school to specialize in nuclear physics.

How can I get a masters and PhD overseas?

Congratulations ! You are born in United States of America - a country which produced highest number of 353 Nobel Laureates so far (compared to second country in that list United Kingdom which has produced 125!). Since, you’re a Physics Undergrad, you should know US tops the chart even in the case of Nobel Prize in Physics.Coming back to your concern, you should know that in order to become a Physicist, you need to have a PhD and not just Masters in Physics. In fact, most of the US schools tend to offer PhD in Physics and not MS in Physics, and tend to admit students right after their BS. Another good news is, nearly all the PhD Physics program are funded. So you shouldn’t be worrying about how to pay for those school. All you need to do is to get great GPA, Test Scores and Research experience, in order to get accepted into those programs. And I’m sure, you can afford to invest time and energy on right things if not money.Still, if you plan to pursue PhD in Europe, again most of the time their PhD programs are fully funded, specially in countries like Netherland, Germany and France. I agree, England offers funding to UK/EU students only, that may be hard to circumvent.I will recommend applying to US schools first as they are top notch. And it doesn’t cost you a penny to pursue PhD in Physics. You may want to talk to some of your Professors about how to get indulged in active research and prepare yourself for Graduate school in US.All the best !

Is it possible to skip a Master's Degree in Physics and directly get my PhD?

Sure. It depends on the school of course. My university had the "terminal" masters, for students that failed their Ph.D. qualifying exams.

How long does it take to get a PhD after a master's?

It depends upon how you proceed with your dissertation . The course work in PHD only takes 6 months and you get at least 2 and half years more to submit your dissertation. Now its completely upto you or to you guide how do you proceed. If you proceed in appropriate manner , then you can complete it withing a time frame of 3 years. An extension of two more years will be always there if you are not able to complete it in time. Here are some quick tips for the PHD dissertationa) Select your topic wisely( Don’t be emotional before the selection of the topic, a bad topic or a topic which is not suitable to your interest or if a topic is selected without any prior knowledge then it might put your research in danger )b) Keep your objectives precisec) Try to cover some development part before your DRC or RDCd) Try to keep maximum literature of recent years and of Indexed Journals like IEEE , SpringerFor any assistance , please visit Thesis guidance in Chandigarh - M Tech Thesis help in Chandigarh - Thesis Chandigarh or call +91–9023469578 , +91–7508793518If you are stuck with anything in your PHD, Just let me know . How long, on average, does it take to obtain a PhD in Physics?

This is for the US only. The same amount of time as most other PhD’s. You start with getting a bachelors degree which takes about 4 years. Then if you go straight into a PhD program, it should take about 4–7 years after your bachelors to earn your PhD. The reason the length varies is because there are a ton of factors that contribute to how long you will take to complete your degree(such as the field you choose, advisor, talent, luck, etc).
