How Modem Speed Works

How does a modem work ??

56k modem, working @24k ??

It's probably a configuration issue on the machine you're connecting to. I've found that disconnecting and then re-dialing will result in a faster connection - although it may take a few tries.

On a bad phone line, or just randomly, you may have trouble connecting with the modem at the fastest speed, so the remote modem will say "Ok...I'll...talk...slower" in the hopes of getting a clear connection.

If you have other phone numbers you can try, you might also want to try one of those.

How does a modem work and what does it do?

Modem stands for MODulator DEModulator and it was at one point the primary means of connecting users to the internet.  Modems basically took an analog medium (noises over a phone line) and converted them to a digital signal (10101011) acting as an OSI layer 2 or Data Link layer in the computers connection to the Internet. (See OSI model)Modems connected users to their ISP (Internet Service Provider) via standard telephone lines. Transfer speeds ranged from 300 baud to 56,000 bits per second depending on where in the timeline the equipment was from, and the quality of the lines the users call routed through.  The limitation of 56kbps was a major contributor to other technologies rapidly supplanting the modem as the standard connection method.  Many users could do no better than 33.6kbps as they were restricted by the telco's equipment regardless of the modem's max speed.  The term modem has an expanded definition today as any device that connects the user to the providers network seems to be called a modem (Cable modem; DSL modem; etc.) regardless of whether the device actually fits the definition of a modulator/demodulator.  Many users unfamiliar with basic terminology refer to the PC case or tower as "the modem".

Sharing Internet with Wireless Router + VOIP phone via single ethernet port modem?

I have recently purchased Time Warner Cable Internet. I have allvoi voip phone as well.

My connection is look like this Motorola SURFboard SB6141 DOCSIS 3.0 High-Speed Cable Modem (OEM Brown Box) -> Allvoid Adapater -> Wireless Router.

Allvoi is not working if i take the connection from Modem to Router to Allvoi, due to firewall in the router.

By doing this everything works, but my speed has been reduced half. Unfortunately my modem has only one ethernet port to take internet out.
Can i go ahead with other modem or any other work around for this? kindly advice. What is the modem i need to buy? i want to purchase DOCSIS 3.0 type modem to get the actual speed which is given by TWC.

What's the best high speed modem to buy?

Modem are pretty simple, you need to get one that will work with your ISP. So pick one like the Motorola SB6121 SURFboard which retails for around $80 but before you buy make sure it works with you ISP. It's not like you can spend a lot of money on a modem and it will make your internet faster you aren't talking about a wireless router where spending more might make a difference.

Can a 4G sim work in a 3G dongle in full speed?

NO

Does the heating of modem affects speed?

moderate heat does not affects speed. you know these are electrical devices so moderate heat is normal however some of the devices are really raise concerns. Huwei modems are tend to high heating issues due. this definitely affect speed or rather say overall performance of modem. I have come across this when i brought up BSNL modem. some are Connection loss, No Wifi SSID , Speed issues , and High CPU utilization.when device are heating up one process run the fan high or try to cool it down hence process and memory unnecessary used for it. Hence, over all work of manage connection(Steady Speed) become secondary Task for Modem. Primary TASK, you know save the device from over heating and physical damage due to it.solutionsInstall Modem where Proper coolingPlace your Modem where air circulation is available(Avoid corners or close cabin). Check air duct on modem and place correctly.Raise concern with Vendor and try to get Firmware up-gradation or Bios Update.Check Drivers and see any physical damages on modems.Thank You

What DOCSIS 3.1 modems work with Xfinity?

There are at least a handful of 3.1 devices that should work with Comcast Xfinity, and they’ve made a handy website where you can see what’s compatible with their service: https://mydeviceinfo.xfinity.com/Enter your zip code (I don’t know why) and select what speed tier you have, and it’ll then show you compatible devices. On the left side there are filters. Towards the bottom of that, you can filter it down to 3.1 devices only.A few examples that might fit the bill:ARRIS SB8200Motorola MB8600Netgear C7800Netgear CM1000These devices were based on a 150 Mbps speed tier and of course DOCSIS 3.1 devices only. I definitely recommend utilizing that site though, just to be sure.

Will my modem’s speed affect what my router speed and WiFi speed will be?

Simply put yes and no!Right now my tablet is connected to my wireless network at 150 MbpsMy cable modem downstream is between 30 and 35 Mbps and my upstream is at 5 Mbps.So the maximum download speed from the internet to my tablet is 30 to 35 Mbps and the maximum upload from my tablet to the internet is 5 Mbps. Now to a local file server that is inside my network my tablet can upload and download at 150 MbpsThe quality of your Wi-Fi connection can also determined or limit how fast you are connecting to the internet.Example:An older device I have only has a wireless B adapter which limits the speed to 11 MbpsThe farther you are away from your wireless router/access point can also hinder the speed.Other wireless networks can interfere and cause connections speed issuesWhich band you are connecting on 2.4 Ghz, 5 GhzAs you can see there are a few other 2.4 Ghz wireless networks in my neighborhood all fighting each other for throughput.
