They haven't been so successful with others, like Firewire and Thunderbolt. The optical drive is at this point unnecessary. When selling Apple computers people would ask about the lack of drive and I would ask them how often they used it. Most people would think about it and then realize they hardly ever did. That was the same process I had. Apple makes a lot of money from digital downloads. Music, movies, and apps all of which Apple takes a 30% cut on make them billions. That business alone, while small compared to their hardware lines, makes more money by itself than many companies do. By pushing people to download their multi-media instead of buying it on a disc, Apple is pushing more business toward their other services. So basically, there are many reasons why they took it out, all of them good, and they feel like it's worth the trade-off. Why keep adding a feature that few people use, that adds to the cost and weight of the machine, when you could be pushing people to your downloads. If you're in the minority of people who still need an optical drive, grab an external. You can also share another computer's optical drive over the network.
