How Much Can Malnutrition Stunt Your Growth

How much does malnutrition stunt your growth?

Say, if someone ate very, very poorly and lost a lot of weight for a period of about a year when he was around 15 years old and going through puberty, would this seriously stunt his growth? Or would he "gain back" this "lost height" if he, in the next couple years, ate a lot, worked out, and gained all the weight back? If this type of malnutrition does stunt growth, by how much?

Thanks, and any information helps!

Does malnutrition in kittens stunt a cats growth?

Hip dysplasia, liver and kidney disease and many other conditions can be caused by consistent, long-term malnutrition during development. Size is a genetic characteristic, consistent malnutrition could effect that, but if it's severe enough to effect the animal's size, it's going to leave a lot more health problems than merely stunting growth.

I'd suggest you take your cat to the vet and they can examine him to make sure he's a proper weight now, but it's possible his growth has been stunted, but some cats are just smaller than most. Just like people, cats come in different sizes.

A vet trip will sort this all out, so that's what I'd suggest to you.

Can malnutrition as a puppy stunt its growth and make it smaller when it is an adult?

Yes, I've seen it too many times and have seen the after effects of malnutrition. Stunted growth, bad coats, long term health problems, joint disease, nerve trouble, and occasional retardation are what I've seen the most of caused by starvation.

Has my growth stunted due to malnutrition?

Maybe. You mentioned anemia and GI bleeding but nothing about malnutrition. In women growth is almost done by age 16 and minimal growth in height after that. If you are 21 you are done! Anemia by itself would not cause stunted growth until with was severe.

What can stunt your growth?

I'm doing a research paper on stunted growth and its causes and have found only sketchy reports that gymnastics, coffee/tea, a lack of vitamin d, as well as malnutrition may stunt your growth however i cant find any definite answers. Can anyone help? Also if there are any other possible causes I'd appreciate the help.

Besides malnutrition how do reptiles get a stunted growth?

my brother said that if you keep a snake in a small tank then the snake will get no bigger than the length of the tank... this is not true because my moms friend has a red ear slider that she had for 5 years and she kept it in a 10 gallon tank for all of its life and the turtle is pretty big...i would have adopted the turtle but i didnt have an extra tank for it and i really dont like turtles.......

now my brother just bought a savannah monitor ans has it in a 55 gallon tank and he doesnt think that the lizard will get much longer...

How much malnutrition is required in order to stunt height growth during adolescence?

When a child is malnourished, the body will follow what you might think of as a hierarchy of needs in order to preserve life. Initially, energy level would be affected somewhat, but as time goes on, energy stored as carbohydrate in the liver and muscles will be depleted, then the fat stores along with some protein tissue to make energy for brain metabolism. Without carbohydrate stores, metabolic pathways to generate energy become more complex. Life is preserved, but the energy required for movement is greatly inhibited. At this point, the body is able to survive with much less energy use. Growth slows down and eventually stops as energy must be drawn from the protein that makes up muscles and then the organs. The amount of time this takes and the degree of growth delay depends on the nutritional status of the adolescent to begin with and how severely he or she is malnourished. If the child is fed at least some carbohydrate, protein tissue will be spared so muscle and organ wasting will decline. But if subjected to starvation repeatedly, even with intermittent periods of being well fed,  growth will be permanently stunted and organ damage may be irreversible leading to death in some cases.

Does malnutrition or other events that stunt growth impact intelligence & physical height?

Like others have said, malnutrition and undernutrition can certainly impact (slow) cognitive development and physical growth. The body will first direct any available energy to processes related to physiological maintenance (a way of prioritizing so that one can survive to see another day), and chronic lack of proper nutrition means there will be little to no “extra” energy to devote to the energetically demanding processes of brain development and bone growth. When children have access to routine medical care (as is typical in high-income countries), growth deficiencies and their underlying causes (e.g., Crohn’s or Celiac’s disease) are often easy to identify and can be treated with remarkable efficacy: after receiving proper nutritional treatment, children often enter a period of “catch up” development to essentially make up for lost time, exhibiting rapid rates of growth until they reach the same developmental phase of their age- and sex-matched peers.Unfortunately, this strategy only works when there is ready access to the medical and nutritional resources needed for diagnosis and implementation of recovery treatment; populations subject to chronic and/or repeated severe food shortages are more likely to see adolescents and adults who exhibit permanent cognitive and physical delay as a result of chronic nutritional insufficiency.

Will being a vegan at 14 stunt your growth?

No being vegan will NOT stunt your growth . Your growth pattern is largely determined by genetics and you inherit your genes from your parents . As a general rule if one or both of your parents are short , then chances are you may be short and vice versa . The three outside influences that can affect your growth are malnutrition , chronic illness and an accident. Even at that , the malnutrition has to be severe to affect your growth rate. It is very uncommon and highly unlikely that almost any child in the United States today has severe enough malnutrition to affect their growth (that is a US statistic ) . In addition if you have "short genes" eating extremely healthy ( as the proper vegan diet) will not increase your height. So to sum it up .. your growth is basically predetermined and being a vegan will not affect that either way . You should eat healthy and I believe the vegan diet is the healthiest diet in the world , and if you feel you are not eating healthy .. vegetables, fruits, nuts , non dairy soy /rice/oat, ... then you need to read about nutrition and be a healthy vegan ... my sons are vegan since birth and their heights/weights are as they should be .. the older is 6 foot and the younger is 5 foot 10 inches ... they are very strong and healthy .. if you want to know about how tall you will be ask your doctor at your next physical .. he can tell you with fair accuracy ..

Would malnutrition cause height loss?

Nutrition is vital for height development. If you don’t get enough, your growth will be stunted anywhere from 1+ inches depending on the severity of lack of nutrition.Once you’re fully grown, it won’t cause height loss. Height loss will naturally occur with age by an inch or two, but nutrition will have no effect on it after growth stops. All lack of nutrition does after height development is complete is decrease your lifespan, and causes you to live an extremely unhealthy life.
