How Much Do Compressed Air Tasers Cost

Does Police Academy require you to get pepper sprayed or tased? I don't know if I could handle that pain.

Pepper Spray was mandatory at my academy.Tasing was a choice once I was out on the street. It is required by my department to carry a taser. I like to have the option.Pain isn’t something I seek. I’m not some hard charger type. But pain is a possibility in this job all of the time. There is a chance you will get harmed and it will hurt and the last thing you can do is succumb to that hurt. It is a side effect and one that cannot dictate your choices. There are many things that are uncomfortable in police work. From sweat rashes to gunbelt bruising. I stretch every morning and evening because I worry about my spine and the slow damage of constant compression due to my vest. But back to pain. Pepper spray sucks. It is not the end of the world but it is miserable. The entire point of it (beyond amusing instructors) is to let you know that you are not dying and the world is not ending when it happens. In some ways, emergency service training is about learning your limits and the fact that you can do more than you think you can.Being tased sucks much less. It hurts but its a general pain that goes away the moment the taser stops. A lot of my coworkers don’t want to be tased. It is an individual choice. I’d pick the taser over pepper spray. I’d also do both again if I knew what I knew now and had to go to the academy or get a taser. I’d not do ether by choice and will never be an instructor that puts me in the position to have it happen by choice again.

How do you bump-start a car with an automatic transmission?

In most (if not all) cases, you cannot "bump-start" a car equipped with an automatic transmission by getting it rolling "in gear" (either by pushing, pulling, rolling down a hill, or otherwise). There are a few reasons, all of which tend to have to do with fluid pressure.First, many/most automatic transmissions utilize a fluid coupler called a torque converter to connect the engine to the transmission. The engine turns the outer housing of the torque converter, which has vanes inside it. The vanes move through fluid and cause the fluid to begin to flow around within the torque converter. This fluid flow then turns a similar set of vanes on an impeller within the torque converter housing, but not connected to it. The impeller *is* connected to the automatic transmission's input shaft. If that sounds sorta complicated, imagine two house fans facing each other. If you turn one on, the other will eventually start to rotate as the air moved by the first pushes against the blades of the second. That's what a torque converter does ... but with fluid instead of air, and much higher speeds and pressures. So, thinking about such an arrangement for a moment, you can imagine that it takes considerable RPM to get the fluid flowing enough to move the impeller. Well, bump-starting would need to obtain an even greater RPM, because you'd be doing the opposite: using the smaller impeller to drive the bigger housing, which is connected to the engine, which tends to resist turning due to compression within the cylinders. But things don't even get that close when trying to bump-start a car with an automatic transmission. To oversimplify things a bit: The input shaft of an automatic transmission drives a fluid pump that forces fluid through the various passages in the transmission to cause the planetary gearset to engage its various gears to ultimately cause the output shaft to rotate. But when the engine isn't running, the input shaft isn't turning, so the fluid pump isn't turning, so there isn't any fluid pressure to engage the planetary gears . So, even though you can cause the output shaft to rotate by pushing the car, it won't cause the input shaft to turn. There are some great "how it works" pages on the web to help explain this better if you want to know more. Just google it.

What's a good home defense solution for Boston residents since there is no right to own a gun?

We have a chance at the Police Chief looking at an application for one, but he denies them mostly. If you dont have around $1000 for fees, classes, and mandatory enrollment on a gun club (which you have to pay every year), you can't even apply. That $1000 estimate doesnt include cost of weapon, ammo, safety equipment, maintenance, and the annual 4-5 hundred $ club membership. De facto, you can't even try your luck applying if you don't have a few thou to put into it; that de facto excludes anyone having any money issues (and this, you may know, is a Recession) or doesnt have connections that give them pull with the Chief. Thats most of the law-abiding citizens of Boston; getting a gun off the street is 1000% easier, and cost about the price of the weapon you buy and no more. E.g., if I wanted a Sig P228 for home defense, and got it the same way 90% of gun-crime convicts do--my local gun dealer 2 blocks away in the projects-- I'd be out $500-$1200 ballpark. If I tried legally get the same exact thing, I'd be out months of thought, effort, paperwork, training (which is actually the only part I think is a clear-cut necessity for safety), ~$1000 to the government in fees etc., and then the Chief "may" issue a permit. Which as I mentioned he doesn't generally.
So, being averse to encouraging the kids selling steel in the hood, and being unable to even apply because like most I can't afford the fees etc., and since i don't have any pull with the Chief of Police of the City of Boston, I wonder if anyone has any ideas on the best option for home defense at my first home in my life that I bought not rented. FYI, Tasers and stun guns are illegal for citizens except LE, and I'm asking about something that will put down (doesnt have to be fatal lol but has to keep him from popping me with his street-bought M&P quality heater) a robber or attacker busting in to cause me grievous bodily harm or death? A @?!#ing crossbow? I have a family; from my youth, I have a couple of people who have indicated that given my address they would come and "take me out." So, sincerely, any ideas about alternatives? I appreciate any help from anyone in this: as I mentioned, I have a family. Thanks everyone.

What is the fastest way to knock someone out safely?

There's a reason anesthesiologists spend eight years in college and medical school, and up to another eight in residencies and other training, just to learn how to knock people out safely. And there are still quite a few deaths related to misdosage or unforeseen reactions to even the most carefully-administered anesthetic.I experienced this first-hand about two years ago when I was in the ER for an accidental stab wound with significant blood loss (long story!). The physicians administered intravenous morphine, and all of a sudden, I started to go cold and my vision started to tunnel as my pulse dropped below 30 and my respiration seized. And that's when I discovered I had a previously undiscovered adverse and potentially fatal reaction to a commonplace anesthetic!Simply put, there is no 100 percent safe method of inducing unconsciousness; there's only varying degrees of "permanently damaging". There was a small chance I could have died that day. Not my definition of safe!Of course, unconsciousness induced through anesthesia is very different from that induced through blunt force trauma, which is not part of the anesthesiologist's toolkit for a reason. Imparting unconsciousness through whacking people on the head is very likely to cause permanent injury or death, for which you would be legally liable for manslaughter or murder, depending on the specifics of the jurisdiction in which you committed the act.

What are some slang terms used among police officers?

The most derogatory terms for the bad guys and citizens who are just pains in the rectum:A.H. = Adam Henry (A-dam H-enry) If you don’t get it…..sometimes you will hear it as “Jack Hole”…..now what starts with an “A” that ends with HOLE ?RICHARD CRANIUM= What starts with a “D” and is a nickname for Richard ? What is the non-medical layman’s term for the Cranium ? Do these clues HEAD you in the right direction ?

How good are BB guns for self-defense?

Bb guns are almost as good for self defense as a hard boiled egg. If you use a hardboiled egg to intimidate or scare an “bad guy” they will likely think your insane and leave you alone. If you use a bb gun, you are relying on the hope it will be mistaken for a real gun & if the ruse is discovered you can expect severe physical consequences. Bear in mind, people with real guns are under no obligation to see if your gun is real or a bb gun & they may shoot you if you draw in the wrong time & place (A hardboiled egg has no such liability)
