How Much Does A Optometrist Fresh Out Of Grad School Make

Becoming a doctor- I already graduated college as an Economics major. I'm 26. Best path thru pre-med school?

Will the fact that I already got a bachelor's degree help me at ALL? (im assuming no)

Also will my path to medical school be the same as a younger student fresh out of high school?

I want to be in the medical field, that is the most important thing. My plan is to become a general doctor. That is the path I plan on taking, but I'm not heedlessly stuck on that path. If another career path in the field of medicine presents itself that I believe would be in my best interests (and that of my future family), I would be willing to switch away form general doctor.

more facts:
i DO NOT want to be a nurse
i do not want to be a surgeon of any sort
if possible, i would like to have SOME free time (once im out of school of course and actually a few years into working)
i understand im going way into debt and sacrificing nearly a decade

How was your experience studying at UH (University of Houston)?

Your experience at UH will largely be based on whether you decide to live on campus or not. I spent the first 2 years commuting from the medical center and the last 2 living on campus. School spirit is definitely much larger than it was when I first started but the campus does feel a bit dull after 6-7 PM when a lot of people leave campus. After all, this is still a commuter majority school, though that is slowly changing. Live on campus. It was the best 2 years of my life. The friends I made and experiences I had were unmatched on anything I did the first two years commuting from campus. I wish I spent all of college on campus, that's how amazing it was. Realize that all the fun and parties takes a back seat to your education. School comes first. You enter college with everything up to you and it's important to spend your time well and wisely. Study in classes and get the most out of what you came here to do- learn. Then have fun with your friends and party all you want. If you place an emphasis on hanging out/partying and doing nothing in college, good luck getting a job/grad school/etc. As a biochemical & biophysical sciences major (biochem), the department is incredible. You don't really get into it until your 3rd year when you take BCHS3304 (biochem 1) but I couldn't have asked to be with a better program. I believe my department is ranked very competitively in TX and it will keep getting better. The professors are incredible wherever you go. One last suggestion- join the Honors College if you can. You'll get an amazing liberal arts education with really interesting faculty. You'll get to take great courses and will have access to priority registration (MAJOR PLUS) and Honors-only housing floors. UH is an amazing school with an amazing body of people. There's a place for everyone here, and that's why we're one of the most diverse and inclusive schools in the country.
