How Much Food Should You Put On Your Plate And How Fast To Eat It

How can I eat a LOT of food without feeling full too fast?

Everytime I go to a restaurant, I always end up leaving a LOT of food left on my plate and waste a lot of money on food because I always end up feeling really really hungry and then I start eating and take a few bites and feel full right away. I wanna be able to actually go into a restaurant and comfortably be able to eat a full meal.

Does anyone know anything I can do to "train" myself to be able to eat more food at once? I heard of drinking lots and lots of water to expand the stomach but I don't know if that'd work... (?) Any suggestions would be appreciated!!

What is the "garnish" that restaurants put on your plate, and are you supposed to eat it?

Fresh Parsley is what they mostly use, and it is eatible. It is used to freshin your breath and cleanse the pallet after a meal. You don't have to eat it, and most people don't. It's use to add color to the plate and fill in the empty areas so it looks as if you have more food on the plate. It's basically catagorized as a Garnish.

Do you demand your children eat all the food on their plates and do you apply that to visiting children?

No to both. I do ask that my children try new foods. That may mean as little as two bites. But, I think that forcing a child to eat everything on their plate leads to obesity. Children’s tummies are tiny! They just need a few bites to fill up. However… if they don’t eat all of their food, there is no dessert. Allowing them to have dessert tells me that they weren’t full and only want sweet.I start each child with one very small spoonful of whatever food we have. If they want more, they are entitled to it. As long as they have tasted everything, I am happy. The words “yuck”, “gross”, etc., are not allowed at my table. If they don’t like it, they are allowed to say they don’t. But, they are not allowed to be rude. Not surprisingly, when they are allowed to help prepare the meal, they are more apt to want to taste new foods and eat more.Don’t make mealtime a bad time. Mealtime should be relaxed and happy.

Why is it immature or rude to cut your food before you eat it?

You are meant to cut your food as you consume it for a number of reasons. It’s not specific to manners. If you cut your protein as you eat it, it will help the meat remain warm. You are able to carry on a conversation if you cut as you eat/consume as well, giving your partner or company time to talk or respond as you cut your next bite. Finally, it helps with portion control. You are always hungrier than you think you are when you sit down. If you slice as you eat, you will likely preserve the remaining food in larger/more whole pieces. Making it better to reheat and consumer later. I guess the conversation part is more relevant to manners, if you had to claim that one is!

What should you do if you find a hair in your food while eating at a restaurant?

If I'm really hungry and want to eat the food, I pretend that it was my hair and just pluck it right out and keep eating - while hair can carry "germs" it's not going to hurt you, so being grossed out by it is totally in your head. Don't bring it to any other diner's attention because it will just spoil their appetite as well. If you want your meal replaced or refunded because of loss of appetite, just show it to your server or the manager and they will take care of it. It happens pretty often. People make food. People have hair. Sometimes it gets in the food as much as we try to prevent it. Get over it and move on.

Do you eat your food communally (off one plate) or on individual dishes?

yeah we eat in one plate with my family , there are efw things who u dont eat in one plate with ur family , any way , i dont live with my family now , so i eat in my own plate , and it s not so good , u fell alone and there is no sharing , eating in one plate make u feel the human love , and loves family , and human generosity. u feel even while eating that u are not alone any more.

How do you feel about buffets that charge you for the food on your plate that you DIDN'T eat?

I’ve been to three of these types of buffets. Here’s my feelings:[1] The first one was in Tallahassee, Florida on Thanksgiving Day. We had been driving around and around, in between doing music shows at nursing homes, trying to find an open restaurant. Most were closed for this holiday. Then suddenly, we stumbled upon this “all you can eat” buffet. Some of the food items I’d put on my plate really sucked. I mean, they were really terrible. So, it was time for a second trip back to the buffet. And that’s when I noticed the sign!Notice: Anything left on your plate will be weighed and charged for at the register.I looked at the sign and read it again. And again. And . . . . again.“Really??? They’re going to charge me double for the horrible tasting food I didn’t eat?”Suddenly, a lovely meal on Thanksgiving Day was turning into a horror movie! Imagine the monsters coming at you with giant spoons of green slime, ghoulishly laughing YOU MUST EAT THIS — OR PAY!!! MUHAA! HA! HA!!!!!!!!I went back to our table and told King Ira the news.“Yep, I see that!” he said, looking equally disgruntled and disgusted. So, that’s when we came up with a plan!!There was a table next to us. The family had just dashed out, leaving food on their plates, too! Those naughty criminals! We quickly added our plates of the yuckky plum pudding and the slimy mashed potatoes onto their table!Phew!!! The nausea in my stomach — thinking about eating that unpalatable crap — suddenly vanished!LESSON LEARNED: I’ll NEVER eat at THAT CRAPPY place ever again — even if it’s midnight on Thanksgiving Day and I’m starving!![2] The second time I encountered one of these “All You Can Eat Punishment Buffets” was in downtown Gainesville, Florida.A brand new Indian food buffet had just opened! It sounded delicious! I love Indian food!!So, here was the catch on this one:It’s hard to have excess on your plate . . . because each time you went back to the buffet, the owner and his son were standing there with a small serving spoon, dishing out seconds to you — one tablespoon at a time!!!Not only that, but the owner would give you a snarling guilt look and sigh heavily with each additional tablespoon you requested. Are you surprised to learn that they quickly went out of business?[3] My third experience with this type of punitary buffet was when I was in South Georgia at a truck stop restaurant. As soon as I saw that sign, I made an about face and headed up I-75 to the next exit. After all, I wasn’t THAT hungry!!!

Why do Chinese lift their plates to their mouth when they eat?

Dinners at a Chinese banquet table are expected to lift personal bowls, never plates, never communal dishes, never pots, pans, kettles or buckets. It is not considered rude to eat or drink from a bowl you can pick up with three fingers. It is rude to tower over dinning sets, have food drip or drop from spoons and chopsticks, or offer glimpses of the inside of one's mouth while eating.Let me first define "personal bowls".Here is a typical table setting for one guest at a formal Chinese banquet table. Clockwise we have spoon, toothpick holder, tea cup with saucer, soup bowl, teapot, chopstick with stand, and a dish pyramid in the center consisting meal bowl on top, meal plate in the middle, and spare plate, some times called bone dish, on the bottom. In this setting, the soup bowl and the meal bowl are personal bowls thus ok to place near mouth.Eating at home is a lot more relaxed. Dinners are likely to be only served with one bowl with rice or noodles already inside. It is the personal meal bowl and it is ok to pick up that one to mouth even if it was bigger. Avoid picking up communal dishes unless asked by hosts. Why do Chinese lift bowls to mouths when eating? Why not? No kittens or dolphins die when bowls left the tables and approached mouths. On the flip side when I was first told soup bowls are as good as bolted onto the table during a western meal I was mortified: do guests just lean in like dogs? Will the spoons be designed for the rough long ride from table to mouth? In case of dripping spoon, should one lick, suck or open wide and shove it in hoping nobody noticed? To this day I do not order soup in a western restaurants. I have to admit not being allowed to pick up a handy soup bowl with those conveniently placed ears annoy me.Before anyone go ahead and pick up your bowl next time at a state banquet with prime minister of China, formal Chinese banquet rule number one, everything everyone says is fine, is NOT fine until the head of the table had done it. It goest to when can you first reach over for a sip tea or wipe your hands with the warm towel served at the beginning of a meal. So unless you are the head of the table or everyone is too drunk to notice, DO NOT BE THE FIRST to pick up anything, bowls included.

Should I remove my tray from table when eating at fast food restaurant ?

I always keep the tray and eat off of it. I don't think the tables get wiped off as much as they should. So to be safe, I use the tray. I figure the tray is safer. But is it really? I doubt it. But I feel as long as the food doesn't touch the actual tray or table, (leaving the sandwich/fries in the wrapper that it came in), that's the best choice. Wow, if we only really knew???

How often do people spit in your food?

I have been a waitress for two years now at a country club, where quite possibly the most grumpy and rude old folk come to dine. I have been disrespected in so many ways by customers, yet I have never resorted once to spitting or tainting their meals. It can be dangerous to their health, not to mention a huge violation of health standards.

I would just recommend being polite and respectful to your server and restaurant staff. As long as you don't create complex special orders (which aggrivate chefs and cooks, who are also in the position to mess with your plate), act obnoxious, or degrade your server, you should be fine.
