How Much Money Can I Earn Straight Out Of College

What can you make straight out of college as an engineer?

What kind of engineer?I have two Software Engineer friends, A and B, who both have really good offers coming out of school:A got an offer from Microsoft paying $105,000/yr salary, plus relocation, a signing bonus (I believe $10k) and $25k of stocks. B got an offer from Apple paying $115,000/yr hourly (First year, then salary later) with full relocation and signing bonus as well. This isn't "average", but if you are in a good field and working hard to do well, you can truly make a lot right out of college.

How can I make at least $90,000 straight out of college with a bachelor's in computer science? Is it possible for someone who is a below average programmer?

[Answering anonymously as this touches on HR issues.]The going rate for must-have undergrads in my shop is $110k/yr.  We recruit from colleges you haven't heard of, but if you're at the top of your class and you've done an internship with us that was seen as a technical success, we'll probably make you an offer.  So imagine the person at the top of your class.  They always get their programming assignments done on time (if not ahead of time) and they usually go above and beyond.  If you're measuring yourself against them, it's not too much of a stretch to think they get to a correct answer twice as fast as you do.  But hey, you get most of your assignments done and you've gotten pretty good grades, so is that really a big deal?Well, you're asking for 90/110 of their salary but you're only working half as fast.  So for a year-long project you're going to cost me $180k and the project is a year late. What's in this for me?Now to be honest, the person who is the head of your class is probably four to six times faster than you are, yet because we as a community understand so little about measuring programming quality they're willing to work for only two to three times what you'll receive.  Which means that I can throw money at those folks and still come out way, way ahead. The good news for you is that your programming abilities aren't fixed.  Everybody who is better than you are was at your level at one point.  You can keep getting better, and as you do you'll get paid accordingly.

How can I afford NYC straight out of college?

I plan to move New York after college. I have wanted to live there since I was a little kid. I know Manhattan is not affordable, so I was thinking Brooklyn or Queens. How much money should I have before I go? How can I make this dream a reality?

Is college education worth it?

Yes. In general the higher the education, the more money you make. Education can open doors that are not available to those without a college degree. I have seen where not having an education has held people back. I have never seen where having a college education was a deterrent. However, chose your area of study carefully. Look where the jobs are projected to be in four years. Chose the highest salaried field that you will enjoy the most. I've seen people go into fields because of their interest, but they couldn't find a job, or the job paid so little money they couldn't support their family. Your career will often determine your standard of living.

How much can a young engeneer earn right out of college?

I know someone in the Bay Area earned 95k as the starting salary 2 years ago. Another SW engineer earned 83k in San Diego, CA. Both of them did internship during college.Quite a number of engineers have to work as technician to start with. In US It’s not easy to find a job right away after college. At the good time only 50% of engineers can get the engineering jobs right after college.

Can a coder, just out of college, be earning $300K?

It is possible but unlikely. Average developer salaries are closer to $100k, less for new grads. Here are a few ways in which it could happen:A PhD math grad going to work for a quant might make $300k+ (with bonuses) if their algorithms are successful.A consultant making $100 an hour could pull in $300K by working 60 hours a week. That would almost certainly require previous work experience and a demonstrated track record. Moreover, it can be difficult to get 60 hours a week continuous work as a consultant. (Contracts come and go adding to the variability of hours.)A founder of a startup could make arbitrarily large sums. However, it usually takes at least a few years for a startup to take off and a few more years for IPO so $300k in the first year might be a stretch.

How true is it that MBA graduates make 100k straight out of school?

At the very best schools, that is certainly the case—but it’s really hard to get into a top 50 MBA program. All of them are very selective and reject the vast majority of people who apply for admission. The total first-year compensation for MBA grads of the top 50 schools is in six figures, though at the lower-ranked schools salaries would be less than $100K, but the bonus money would put you over that amount.Consider the University of Tennessee. The average salary for a recent MBA grad there was $88,560, but because the average bonus, received by 61% of the class, was $13,634, the total comes to $102,394.At the very top end, Stanford, the average salary was $144,455, but the bonus money is so significant, both signing bonuses and year-end guaranteed bonuses, that a Stanford MBA makes more than $250,000 in his or her first year after graduation. All of this depends on the school brand, the field you enter, the location of the job, and how qualified a candidate you are for the job you are going after. Here’s our latest look at MBA pay:MBA salary plus bonus plus other compensation at the top 50 U.S. News schools

Joining the FBI out of college?

Joey has a lot of good info regarding the specialty tracks that the FBI focuses on hiring from. Those are far more important than a Criminology degree.

It is not likely that you'd be selected as a Special Agent right out of college. They're generally looking for at least a few years of relevant experience in one of the tracks, as well as demonstrated leadership experience.

When I was going through the application process (I ended up being selected for the Phase II interviews, but pulled myself out since it was the first day of a new career), the SA applicant coordinator told me that he gets plenty of people that he considers not "highly competitive" because they just need a couple years more experience before being competitive for that Phase II portion.

Criminology degrees are a dime a dozen at the local and state law enforcement levels...although it can at least give you the edge of having a 4-year degree if your plan is to get a police job that way, then spend a few years doing exceptionally there before applying for the FBI.

Where I'd disagree with Joey is that it's not that competitive, and you can just walk off the stage with your diploma and into an FBI office to get a job (sure, an exaggeration of his point). Last November when usajobs.gov opened up for the SA position after a year of no availability, they got 70,000-some applications. About half of those were accepted for Phase I testing, and half of THOSE passed onto the one-on-one interview with the local field office stage. And 2,000 some ended up making it to the Phase II round. So, yes, it's quite competitive. That's why having stand-out performance and experience in the chosen field is important to be competitive.
