What led to economic boom after World War 2 when it was widely believed to lead to another depression?

Before the war, there were not enough jobs to go around, hence the depression. As America geared up for the war and then got involved, two things happen which would have a great effect on postwar America.

Number 1, to produce what was needed for the war, America's manufacturing began to grow at a fantastic rate. Number 2, there was rationing, so as workers started making money again, there wasn't a lot for them to spend it on. So, they saved lots of money. They financed a lot of the war by buying bonds.

Since the men were going to war, women had to work in the factories. What often happened in wars past was the soldiers would come home and there weren't any jobs for them. But as one can tell by the baby boom that followed the war, when the men came home, the women left the jobs and went home and made babies. That meant there were jobs for the soldiers when they came home.

So why wasn't there a depression? People had money to spend. There were jobs available. And since there had been rationing for so long, there was a need for durable goods. Americans had 10 year old cars with worn out tires. They had money to spend and things they needed to buy. That usually rules out a depression.

What was life like in the US after World War 2?

A little difficult at 1st. The War ended (to everyone's relief/ joy) Aug. 1945. The US had no fewer than 16 million people in some uniform on every continent, that had to brought down to 4 million, and most of the world outside the US was wrecked. That meant 12 million demobilized unemployed...but...the US was greatly helped by the FDR-Truman, 'GI-Bill'. This used much of the great wealth the US had built up during the War to fund free and low cost mortgages and benefits to veterans, and then later to anyone who had wore a uniform or helped in the War (just about everyone), building a much bigger US working and 'middle class'.
By 9 years later (the mid 1950's) the US had built up a large prosperous working (blue collar) class and middle class, with lots of savings (highest in history) and a big 'baby boom' of new children 1949-1959. An economic boom started about 1956 and exploded on through the 1960's and into the mid 1970's
