How much tax refund should I expect if I made 42K and paid 7K in federal taxe. Paid 11K in intereston Mortgage?

It depends on if you have children.

regardless you need to change your withholdings right now. For a single person your Federal tax liability would be way less than 7K.

You may get back all $7K you paid in.

How much should my tax refund be?

My income was about 17,900. Federal withheld was about 1334. State withheld was about 270. I file as single, I am claimed as a dependent by my mom. When I tried to file on turbotax it said my refund would be about $80, that doesn't sound right to me since I made a lot more than previous years. Any thoughts or advice?

How can you work out how much tax refund you will get?

You can figure out your tax refund by completing your tax return. A tax return is the form you fill out to determine how much tax you actually owed in the prior year. You then subtract how much you paid over the course of the year, either through payroll deductions or quarterly estimated payments. If the result is a positive number, then you owe the government money and will need to pay it when you file your return (or face interest and possibly penalties/fines).If the result is a negative number, then you can expect a tax refund from the government. It can take anywhere from one to seven weeks to get that refund, depending on how you filed (e-file vs paper file) and how you want to get the refund (direct deposit vs check), as well as when you file. Early filers tend to get their refunds faster. There's no magic to it. And for the vast majority of filers, it's a relatively simple form to fill out.

Am I allowed to put my tax refund in my 401k?

No, but you can contribute your refund to an IRA. Alternatively you can increase you 401k deferral so that you are taking advantage of the maximum employer match. 401k deferrals can only be made through payroll deduction for W-2 employees.
