How Much Time You Will Take To Complete The Roofing Job

(10 points) A homeowner estimates that it will take him 7 days to roof his house. A professional roofer...?

Let t = the amount of time to do the job together.

The homeowner can do 1/7 of the job in one day.

The pro can do 1/4 of the job in one day;

Together they can do 1/7 + 1/4 of the job in one day.

They are doing one roof, so the equation is:
(1/7 + 1/4)t = 1
11/28(t) = 1

t = 28/11 days (about 2 and a half days).

Is it possible to install a new roof in winter?

Winter roofing can be dangerous. Slippery or damaged surfaces come with inherent risks. Ice dams cause additional complications. Projects in the winter can take longer, and some teams don’t have the manpower to dedicate to these installations.Unfortunately, accidents do happen when working in dangerous conditions. Unless you’re experienced with working on slippery roofs, it’s best to hire a professional for all winter repairs and replacements. It’s important to ensure that you hire an experienced roofing contractor.It can be helpful to ask your roofing contractor about the team’s experience in cold months. Many contractors even carry smartphones with pictures of recent projects; ask to see examples of the team’s work.For many roofing professionals, winter roofing is just part of the job. Our team has years of winter roofing experience; this ensures they know the proper procedures, and will walk the homeowner through each step of the process.Shingles installation is best above 40 degrees Fahrenheit.To properly install shingles and protect your home against future ice dams, it’s best to complete roof installation in temperatures above 40 degrees. Cracking and damage is more probable when temperatures fall. And, as Michiganders know—temperatures can vary quickly.That being said, we can do alternative installation methods to resolve immediate issues. Roofing experts must handle shingles carefully and do their work efficiently, doing so decreases the risk of problems. Ignoring best practices will cause the roof to fail prematurely or allow future problems, like ice dams.Metal roof installation is fine during the winter.The metal roof installation process varies from other materials, like shingles. For shingles projects, the adhesives become the biggest concern in lower temperatures. Metal doesn’t use these adhesives, so winter has no impact on our process. Water cannot travel upward due to the design of metal roofing. And, snow typically slides off the metal materials, lessening the risk.Winter roofing projects can take longer.The sealing process for all roofs doesn’t happen in below-freezing temperatures. If it’s not an emergency, roofers will usually wait until there are few days of favorable temperatures to perform the job.

What are the things I need to consider before selecting a roofing contractor to replace my roof?

The biggest obstacle homeowners face when looking to fix or replace their roof is choosing the right person to do the job. After a damaging storm, they need to quickly get back to normal and perform the necessary roofing repairs. But that doesn’t mean they should just choose the first contractor who knocks on their door. Finding a roofing contractor who is trustworthy, honest, and professional may sound difficult – but that’s where you come in.Get local referrals. There is less chance of potential issues or scams when you choose a contractor from your community. They are more familiar with local rules and code regulations and have a relationship with area crews and suppliers.Look for manufacturer designations. Manufacturer designations are considered a badge of honor because the contractor must pass certain minimum requirements to be factory-certified (although, some manufacturers have more stringent requirements than others).Research Better Business Bureau (BBB) ratings. Some contractors blow in (no pun intended) right after a storm looking for work, so it’s important to look them up on the BBB website and make sure they have a good score. Stay away from contractors who do not exist on BBB.Get an extensive warranty. Not all contractors can offer manufacturer warranties that include coverage of the contractor’s workmanship. If a contractor installs the roof incorrectly, it may take months or years for the damage to show up—and insurance won’t pay for it. If the contractor won’t fix it (or worse, has gone out of business), your only recourse is to pay for their mistake yourself.Be concerned about safety. A contractor without a training or safety program may not be the best person for your job. GAF sponsors a unique national training organization called the Center for the Advancement of Roofing Excellence (CARE), which has trained more than 200,000 professionals. GAF is the only roofing manufacturer with a dedicated team of trainers in the industry.

How long would it take to re-roof my home myself?

I just had a roofing inspection and it turns out we're overdue for a new root. Who knew? I'm entertaining the possibility of getting a couple of construction buddies to help me lay down a new roof layer with asphalt shingles and am wondering how long it might take and how to go about estimating costs, how many tiles are needed, etc.

I checked Lowes' website and I see prices like $19.99 but is that per shingle or per box which amounts to what the industry calls a "square"? I'm green in this area but this job shouldn't be too very difficult to accomplish.

We currently have one layer of shingles and I believe we are allowed to have up to three layers. We don't plan to "strip" and start over, just add a new layer to renew the roof. Let's see if we can't save ourselves from a $10,000 roofing job!

How long should leave the roofing contractor's sign in my front yard?

I would say leave it no longer than 2 weeks. Take it down and call them thanking them again for the job, and telling them you have their sign sitting out back. *You don't even need to mention that you took it down, they should get the message when you call and say you saved the sign for them.

What are the most important factors to look before hiring a roofing contractor?

Replacing your roof is a big investment, so make sure you choose the right company. Here are some questions to ask before you decide on a roof installation company.Ask How Long the Roofing Contractor Has Been in BusinessYou probably wouldn’t take your car to a mechanic who has been on the job for two weeks. And you probably wouldn’t sign up for heart surgery with a doctor fresh out of school. So why pick a roofing contractor that doesn’t have a long track record of doing high-quality work?In many cases, homeowners allow price to dictate the contractor they choose. As with most things in life, you get what you pay for. If you go with a roofing company that can give you a bargain price but can’t provide a list of happy customers, you’re probably going to end up with a substandard installation.Double Check Licensing and InsuranceRoofing is a dangerous job, which is why we never recommend homeowners take it on themselves. It’s important to have the right tools, materials and safety equipment. It’s also important to have experience. Reputable roofing contractors hold the requisite permits and licenses for every job they perform.Look at Past WorkFor most businesses that provide a service, reputation is everything. Think about the last time you went to a new restaurant, or even visited a new hair salon or dentist’s office. In past years, you might have asked a friend or relative for the names of a good place to grab dinner or get your teeth cleaned. Today, however, the internet provides unbiased, third party reviews from people who have used a business’s services in the past. In fact, 81 percent of consumers say they research online before they make a purchase. Before you spend money, it pays to do your homework.Price Isn’t the Only Thing That MattersIf you’ve ever undertaken a home renovation project in the past, you may have been told to “get three estimates.” No one really knows where this so-called “three estimates” rule comes from, and no one seems to be able to say why three is the ideal number.
