Now deduct from that sum the amount you ordinarily spend on a weekend getaway. The result is the amount you could be expected to spend on the wedding by any reasonable standard. If this amount is greater than you would normally spend on a gift, send a small token gift. If the total is less than your usual gift, spend the remainder on a modest present. If this makes you feel guilty, remind yourself that some forms of guilt are entirely irrational.
