How Often Should I Cleanse/detox

How often can you detox and cleanse your body?

A common misconception is that detoxing or cleansing the body involves restricting your food and basically starving yourself for days on end. Not a very appealing thought, and you can understand why the people who attempt this ill-fated approach often fail and then renounce their new-found drive for a healthy lifestyle!

A perfect example of a slightly crazy, and most definitely idiotic detox is the 'Lemonade Diet' popularised in the 1990's and somehow still being attempted across America today! This diet involves consuming nothing but homemade lemonade (containing maple syrup!) for anything up to 14 days and beyond, with the mantra - if you feel hungry, just have another glass of lemonade! I'm sure I do not have to explain the dozen flaws in this plan - but let me assure you, a proper detox is about abundance, not starvation.

To give your body the tools it needs to detoxify, cleanse and regenerate a detox must give the body even more vitamins, minerals and nutrients than normal. This is often achieved through consuming fresh juices, soups and occasional supplements. A bottle of lemonade simply doesn't cut it I am afraid!

As put perfectly on ivillage 'A detox regime increases your intake of foods and drinks that serve our bodies well as building blocks...(and) provides protective antioxidants and simultaneously cuts out those habits that rob you of nutrients and optimal health.

How often should you detox for a healthy stomach?

This is a really good question because if you detox for too long or too often you can loss valuable nutrients along with the toxins and leave your body depleted. For this reason I wouldn't recommend doing a 'full on' cleanse were you restrict your diet for more than 2 to 4 times a year. There are also times in your life where detoxing is either not beneficial or should be done under medical guidance. Examples of this is when you are pregnant or breastfeeding and need to have enough nutrition to support another little person. Or if you’re recovering from an illness and need to build your body up.Diabetics also need to be careful of detoxing because they require a steady supply of energy. If you are ill, it is advisable to seek medical supervision for any detoxification process.Body cleanses are healthy ways to remove built-up toxins, improve energy and concentration levels and achieve an overall sense of well-being. The type of body cleanse you choose determines the length of time it should be done for a successful outcome. It is important to do cleanses for only the time specified because some require drastic fasting periods or the use of herbs and supplements. For More Info: https://www.beautyepic.com/activ...

Liver cleanse / detox without a gallbladder?

'Liver cleanses' and 'gallbladder flushes' are not advisable. Firstly, it's impossible to 'cleanse' or 'flush' the liver or the gallbladder with anything. Nothing that you swallow enters your gallbladder at any point in the digestive process, and by the time any nutrients from your drink reach your liver, they will not be in a form that have any cleansing effect. The process does not get rid of gallstones, and drinking oil is very, VERY stupid for someone who has gallstones as fatty foods aggravate the problem and can cause a lot of pain and inflammation.

Also, no, gallstones are not present in the liver. They can pass from the gallbladder into the stomach (which tends to be very painful - trust me, I've experienced it) but not into the liver. There are no stones in your liver. If you want a healthy liver, drinking epsom salts, olive oil and apple juice is not going to help you in the slightest, and will simply make you feel ill and cause you to pass lumps of undigested solidified oil in your excrement (which people often mistake for 'stones' - hence the myth that this 'detox' flushes out gallstones).

If you want a healthy liver, then eat healthily, don't consume too much saturated fat and only drink alcohol in moderation. It really is that simple. 'Liver cleansing' is a quack remedy that achieves nothing, and will likely make you feel nauseous and do you more harm than good.

Think about it: if it was possible to cleanse the liver in this way, doctors would recommend it and health insurance companies would make do this cheap process rather than paying out for them to have bona fide medical treatment.
