How Secure Is Dropbox

What about the security in Dropbox? How Dropbox stands out of crowd in cloud?

I think the question can be asked about all cloud storage services. Is Dropbox’s back-end system more secure than Google Drive’s or OneDrive’s? Nobody really knows for sure.Is your data in the cloud absolutely secure? Clearly it is not. But do we need absolute security, or do we have absolute security by not using Cloud Storage? For average users and SMBs, if your devices are connected to the Internet, you don’t have absolute security, whether you use cloud storage or not. There are millions of home users and SMBs whose computers/devices got hacked every year. We can reasonably believe that all cloud service providers spend a lot of efforts to secure their systems, and they usually do a much better job than an average user. (Of course, if they do have a security breach, the impact is usually huge). Now we can talk about another aspect of security. The question can be generalized to: Is Cloud Folder Sync service secure? (Most people use Dropbox with its desktop app, which syncs a local folder with a user’s cloud storage. Google Drive and OneDrive also use folder sync.)For personal users, I think it is fine. Dropbox syncs your data to the cloud, which is then synced to your multiple devices. Assuming all your devices are secure, then your data is secure. For businesses with a lot of employees, it is very different. It could create a security nightmare for IT managers. Business data is usually stored in a central file server where IT managers can set fine-granular access control. But with a folder sync service, business data is synchronized to employee’s personal devices. IT managers cannot really control data stored on each employee’s computer. Data can be leaked from any computer/device, either by an employee, or by a hacker, if an employee’s computer is compromised.A cloud file server solution that works just like a local file server is clearly more secure for businesses.

How secure are Dropbox and Evernote?

If you have used a strong unique password, applied two-factor verification, and protect all your devices with similar passwords and don’t share any access with family members, I’d put it at about 9.5 out of 10 for both.If you want something kept secret however, don’t put it on the internet. There’s an ongoing skirmish between very smart security providers and equally smart crackers, and from day to day one side or the other gets an advantage.Even software that is specifically designed to protect your passwords to other services has been found recently to include some weaknesses - What should password managers not do? Leak your passwords? What a great idea, LastPass - so if you save something online it is always possible that it will get stolen at some point.Like somebody famous once said - two people can keep a secret, as long as one of them is dead…(It’s not relevant to your enquiry, but just as an aside - I always had problems when someone told me something “in the strictest confidence”. Did that mean they really expected me to keep the secret? Or that they were telling me so I could prepare a good defence if something came back to me? Or did they expect me to leak it to others so they could judge how popular or otherwise a move would be with complete deniability? Or did they suspect me of leaking confidential stuff like a sieve and want to test me out? I hate being kept in loops…)

Is DropBox secure?

The main issue with dropbox is not security ( security is an issue , but not the no.1) . The main issue is privacy. Can dropbox engineers see my files ? yes. Can the govt see my files? yes. Dropbox collects meta data of your files and "processes" them. They have the power in their hands to see your data anytime. Infact if you read their ever changing privacy policy, it is amply clear that you agree to place your files in their cloud at your risk etc. This is why we need device(your own computer) side encryption. That is, encrypt your files on your device , with your password that only you know before uploading to any cloud service like dropbox. Securasi ( SECURASI|Best File Encryption Software is one such software that provides client side encryption. You can just google it to find out.

Is Dropbox FREE and SAFE?

Dropbox is free for up to 2GB and you can get some extra free space by completing certain tasks (e.g. tweeting about dropbox etc..) and by referring friends.
As for security, dropbox only encrypts your data in transit. That means that dropbox employees could theoretically see your data. Also, dropbox copies your files automatically between computers so the security of your files is only as good as what sort of permissions you set up on the computers that you install dropbox on. If you set up your dropbox in a computer's public folder then any other user of that PC can see your files. I love dropbox and use it quite often, for files that you don't want anyone to have access to you could encrypt them before you put them in the dropbox (e.g. using Truecrypt or 7zip). That way, no dropbox employee can read your confidential data.
Keep in mind, that if your password is compromised then anyone with your password can see all of your files, for that reason I HIGHLY recommend turning on two-factor authentication (dropbox offers this via google authenticator). This will safeguard your files even if your password is snooped via a keylogger in an internet cafe.

Hope this helps!

How safe is dropbox?

You will have to decide for yourself.
See if this article will help you do that:
Dropbox Blames Employee Account Breach for Spam Attack; http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article/260176
All it takes is one misstep in the complex chain of security and stewardship to blow the whole thing.

When using any off-site storage, follow these guidelines:
For reasonable security and privacy, data should be encrypted before sending, independent of any site involvement with that phase.
Use a solid 'on-board' utility for this, and practice a couple of times with some nondescript file to master the entire process so you know for certain you can get your files back.
That would be: file encrypt> upload>download> decrypt & verify.
Once proficient, go ahead with the more delicate file work.

"...photos taken by many phones are routinely encoded with latitude and longitude tags...[and]...looking at the location metadata stored with pictures posted through one man's anonymous Twitter account, the researchers were able to pinpoint his likely home address. From there, by cross-referencing this location with city records, they found his name. Using that information, the researchers went on to find his place of work, his wife's name, and information about his children. Servers: How Secure is Dropbox for Teams?

While there are privacy policies/settings you can apply to your Dropbox account, it's not always 100% secure. The best way to secure your content is through encryption. By encrypting your files, you can guarantee that hackers cannot access the encrypted content. Here is an article about encryption: Technology Trend Tuesday: EncryptionnCrypted Cloud is a privacy, security, and collaboration company that encrypts files stored in the cloud. How can I secure my Dropbox folder so that if the laptop or cellphone is lost, data is secured?

Dropbox keep backup of your files for 30 days, so in case someone gets hold of your laptop and delete all your files, you can recover them within 30 days. However, more problematic scenario is when the laptop hard-drive is not encrypted, and so offender has access to all the files synced on that laptop. So in case some one gets access to your laptop, follow these steps :  - take backup of all dropbox files  in some other computer/laptop  - delete any sensitive files in your dropbox.  - wait for sync to remove the file from stolen laptop ( with hope offender hasnt accessed them yet) -  unlink the stolen laptop from dropbox (https://www.dropbox.com/account#security) - Resync those sensitive backup-ed files.- Change your dropbox password.
