How Soon Do You Usually Have To Start A Job

What do i put under "How soon are you able to start?" on my job application?

The best response is the honest response. If you can start tomorrow, you say "immediately". If you have to give notice at a current job, then you say "two weeks after hiring". If you have a commitment (like a winter vacation), then you can say something like Jan 3, 2011.

How long can the gap between OPT start date and actual job start date be? Or does it even matter?

I have earlier written a very detailed answer on OPT and EAD procedural requirements and I will try to pull that one and post it. Meanwhile, all F1 students should remember the following;F1 visa holders can apply for EAD under OPT , 90 days prior to program-end date and upto 60 days after the program end date thru DSO ( Designated Student Official) of the University.Normally it takes about 75 days to 120 days to get the EAD issued. If you are lucky to get your full-time job, before graduation, care should be taken to get the work-start date with the new employer giving sufficient time for the formalities to be completed with regard to EAD under OPT.Employers may have their restrictions in having the work-start date. In certain cases, they may even postpone their start date due to certain reasons. They may have work start date only once in a month, say on the first Monday and so on.In case you are not lucky to get full time job, every efffort should be made to postpone your program end date , that is graduating. It may not be possible always. Then you need to apply for EAD, within 60 days after the program end date. You cannot remain unemployed for more than 90 days during your OPT after the start date mentioned in the EAD. ( But this does not include 10days between finish of one job and starting of another job). ( STEM OPT holders also get additional 30 days unemployment period during their STEM Extension period). If, for any reason, there is likely to be more than 90days gap between the EAD start date and work start date, efforts should be made to do volunteer work or unpaid intern( without violation of labour laws) during this period at least for 20 hours a week and maintain records for the same. You should also take advantage of employers filing your H1B prior to your graduation date and prior to your work-start date, for those of you who are fortunate to have a full time job prior to graduation. They should obtain necessary documentation to the effect that courses have been completed for the necessary graduation, so that employers can file your H1B on 1st of April. ( those of you graduating in May).Ramamurthy Guruvayurappan's answer to When should you apply for OPT (Optional Practical Training)?

How long does it usually take for antibiotics to start working?

Anti biotics are a big group of drugs.if you have infection of upper respiratoy tract and fever, doctor will prescribe you antibiotics.most of the times these ABS are broad spectrum(will be effective against multiple types of bacteria which usually are seen in these patients).Getting culture is tedious, costly and time consuming(min 48 to 72 hours).surely you would not like to suffer for another 2-3 days waiting for the culture report.further growth characteristic pattern and drug sensitivity may be different in vivo and in vitro.therefore it is only practical that doctor prescribes you medicines in standard doses according to your clinical presentation.there are many factor which can change bioavailability of drug(as described by other author).however most of the standard regimens ensure that adequate drug level is reached within a day or two.by  this time clinical response will be evident.please note that many a times upper resp infection is due to viruses(like influenza virus, swine flu etc).ABS are not effective against viruses. In case of respiratoy distress and non responsive ness to treatment please get the test for swine flu(in view of recent epidemic). Most other virus inf are self limiting.giving ABS will prevent secondary bact inf.

How long should you ask for before starting a job if they have no particular start date?

I usually say 2 weeks from getting a formal offer, which should include a copy of the job contract. Most companies are happy with this and many take some time to get ready for you to start.Don’t rush the start, even if you can, because every company that has rushed for me to start have not been ready when I do start. There is often no computer ready, the supervisor has no time to see me and I end up spending weeks sitting around waiting for work.

How long do you usually wait to get your first paycheck?

Im 16 years old, I Have been working at some restaurant as a dish washer for about a week and a half and the first week evryone got paid and i was the only one that didnt...i asked some of my co-workers and they said i had to wait a week because when they pay you they pay you for the week you worked before this one...i'm not even in the system yet, so i cant punch in/out so i hav to keep track of my hours on some sheet they give us...i just want to know what should i do if i dont get payed this week? should i quit, or wait another week... i really need some advice this is like my first job...=\

How long do places usually take to call you back after turning in job applications?

I would not wait a week. I would give it 3 days tops. You have to be aggressive and stand out. My daughter thought I was crazy, I told her call call call. She finally did and guess what?? They had forgotten about her, when she called they pulled her app out. She got an interview the same day and was hired. If they have tons of apps, yours can get shoved to the bottom. If you are the only one that calls, they dig it out and now its on top. ALWAYS follow up. What do you have to lose? just a phone call. It shows you are eager, and a go getter and take initiative. It may only be retail now, but one day it will be for a bigger better job.

When do you usually get your first pay check?

It depends on a few small circumstances.

1. How long is the pay period, weekly, or bi-weekly?
2. Did you start the job in the middle of the current pay period, at the beginning of the pay period, or at the end of the current pay period?
3. How many initial weeks of pay does the employer withhold, one week or two?

If you started last week, at the beginning of the pay period, and the pay period is bi-weekly, and the employer only witholds the first week of pay, you should get your first paycheck for your first week of work at the end of next week.

If the pay period is weekly, and the employer only witholds the first weeks pay, you should get a paycheck next week also for your first week of work.

If the pay period is bi-weekly, and you started at the beginning of the pay period and the employer witholds only one week of pay, you should get a paycheck next week also, but for only the first week of work.

If the pay period is bi-weekly and you started in the middle of the pay period, you won't get paid untill the end of the next pay period, but should get paid for two weeks of work, because the first week of work will be witheld.

If the pay period is bi-weekly and you started at the end of the pay period and the employer witholds the first week of work, you will get paid at the end of the next pay period for two weeks of work.

I know it sounds confusing, and it is, your best answer will come from your employer. You should ask your manager.

How long does it usually take for a job offer after an interview?

A2AI’m going to give the same advice that I gave to someone who applied for a director’s role at a software company.Send a thank you note, after the interview, so that it arrives the day after, or the next day. Something like (assuming the person who interviewed you was named “John Doe”:John Doe:Thank you again for considering me for this position, I really appreciate it!I look forward to hearing from you regarding the position!Sincerely,Your Name Here(999)-999–99991122 Example AvenueAnytown, USATo:Demonstrate your continued interest in the jobDemonstrate your enthusiasmGet your name and contact informationDemonstrate that you are willing to make a bigger effort than the other people who interviewed (how many other people bothered to send a note?)Make them more likely to notify you, even if you didn’t get the job (some employers just don’t tell you anything, if the hire someone else!)And that covers it.As far as how long it takes: it take however long it takes.Depending on the employer, they might get busy with other stuff, or they might hire someone else and not say anything, or they might have a longer time frame, or someone in the family might have a baby, etc..Usually, I recommend you not sit waiting on only one employer, and that you interview multiple places.However.This is a job where, at best, you’re likely to need a food handler’s permit from the local city/county/whatever.The better answer for this kind of job when asked when you’re available to start is always “Right now, ma’am!”.They are more likely to hire you on the spot, if they like you at all, rather than interviewing other people (“A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush”).For a job that has a relatively low bar, if you can be available immediately, it’s always best (unless you have promised other interviews). Everyone but another employer, or a kid waiting to be picked up from somewhere, is going to understand you cancelling on them in favor of work. And good luck on the new job!

How long typically do you start working after you sign your offer letter?

My company holds off on the comprehensive background check until an offer is made and accepted. This typically takes a week. This action or the typical 2 weeks notice a new employee provides to his/her current employer are usually the barometer for start-date. Of course, sometimes there are unique circumstances, such as a long-distance family move, that can make the delay longer. As a sidebar, I’ve hired people from other divisions in our corporation and in these cases, I negotiate a transfer date with his current manager that best-fits the combined business needs. Heck, I’ve started this type of new employee part-time in a couple of instances to enable him to start his new job and concurrently transition his current job to his replacement.

How long do you have to work at walmart before you can request a transfer?

Typically about 6 months but there must also be an opening in the same department in the store you want to transfer to. You may also have to take a pay cut if you get a raise at your current store but the store you transfer to only has a lower paying position open.
