How To Adapt To An American High School

British boy going to American high school?

There won't be too much of a difference except for the fact that everyone will be talking about you. Not in a bad way though. At my school , everyone wants to be friends with the exchange student . And the girls love the guys with the accents. People are going to want to know things about your home life and how you like America. But there isn't too much of a difference. We use different words compared to you guys (example: elevator and lift) but we're all people. Just expect a lot of attention ! And good luck! You'll be fine !

English boy moving to american high school?

We have some spelling diferences (flavor not flavour) and we list the month first, not the date first, when writing out a date numerically. We have some differences that most American kids won't even understand. We never use the words "fortnight" or "whilst". In Chicago, we talk really fast, and clip our vowels. We also cut off the ending part of a sentence. "Do you want to go out to the restaurant with us as we are gathering a group to get lunch" becomes "You wanna go to McD's?" or even just "So, you wanna go?" Rent the movie Groundhog Day. Bill Murray has a perfect Chicago accent and attitude.

I think you will be fine. The others have pointed out that the girls will swoon, and they are correct.

What is it like to be in an American high school as a foreign student?

I'm an exchange student from the Philippines and Im having my last days in an American High School. My advice: Have a friend with you who knows a lot about american high schools and the activities they will be having to make the most out of your experience. You will need help on how classes are going and how to enter sports/clubs/events.  Just do it. If you're hesitant in engaging with new kinds of activities, stop being so. Try a lot of challenging classes and sports or clubs. Don't be afraid that youre not sure of what youre doing.I'm telling you this because I myself was too scared to try new things. Now I wish I could go back and do everything I enjoy and not be afraid to do it. I wish you the best luck!PS. I didnt have anyone to direct me about things that are going on. I have to figure them out all by myself. It wasn't bad but it is better to have somebody to help you with your questions.

What are your thoughts on the American school system?

It’s god-awful. The Department of Education should be abolished, and should the public sector teachers unions (all public sector unions, in fact). Allow communities and states and to control themselves and their educations, and focus more on actual practical skills. All schools should have vocational programs to help them get jobs right out of high school with local tradesmen or companies. Imagine if students could get jobs right out of high school instead of having to waste 4 years and tens of thousands of dollars for no reason at all. Allow them to inter at law and doctors offices, or learn a trade. The government needs to get out of schools pretty much altogether and allow them to be run by communities. The only things that the state should be worried about is funding these schools, and that should depend on more factors than just test scores on a single exam every year.

How are Broadway musicals adapted for middle or high school?

There is a big difference between middle school and high school adaptations. Middle schools often do the “junior” versions of a show, which feature simplified music and usually are cut down to an hour at most.High school adaptations are usually not different from the originals, but sometimes some suggestive scenes and language are taken out. Sometimes, not. The idea of an under-18 version of a show originated with Les Miserables, which was introduced for schools long before it was available to adult communities. The differences are minor, with some pejorative references to Jews and homosexuals removed, and some of the longer scenes cut down a bit. Sometimes, schools edit their own shows according to the needs of the community.

What are some reasons why adapting to high school is difficult?

Your high grades will return when you are feeling better. Study and depression are very hard. Have you sought help? You can talk to your doctor, to a school nurse/support services and to your primary carers. There is help out there and you are in a lot of pain right now.High schools can be an incredibly stressful environment. often sold as the best years of a young person’s life, for many its the opposite. Its the hardest years and its not much spoken of, and this adds to the student’s feeling of failing. And maybe you are adding extra pressure/criticisms on yourself for your grades. The reason its so hard is because the greatest form of stress in human lives is other people. Humans are very political, they scapegoat, the police one another, they emotionally punish those they perceive as not following norms. It can leave people very socially anxious or even bullied. But not everyone is like that. High school is scary so there are actually lots of students in a school, in one class even, who are feeling depressed and anxious. But everyone is hiding it.The answer is talking, getting everything off your chest, accepting help and support, nurturing and loving yourself, and in time, when you feel stronger, the grades you want will come back. For many, life begins after high school :-). Don’t lose hope, get help, plough on.
