What are the best plants to it in my garden to attract butterflies and other insects in a dry ‘zone 6’ climate?

I would suggest you call up your local extension service and ask them. Gardening Know HowIf you’re not in the USA, that won’t help you. You could try the nearest botanical garden, ask them if they could suggest an answer to your question, or if they could guide you to a gardening advice source.

What kind of plant can you use to attract butterflies to your garden?

I have several plants for you, that are all of “our” favorites. Mind you, at times I can see more butterflies than when I would go to the Cockrell Butterfly (Great Pyramid) Center in Houston. Hundreds, if not thousands.Monarchs, Swallowtails, and every (12+) Skipper known to this state. In Indiana, my admission is “free". I have certain friends who can sit for hours:)“Serenity Gardens” is what she coined my very back yard.Butterfly Bushes, and Bee Balms.Bee Balm is appropriately named, just don't expect honey bees. They don't have long enough tongues to reach the nectar. Butterflys must:)Btw, it can even get weedy…thank God!!!Even, I can't kill it.It needs the root ball halved about every 3 years to prevent a dead center. And watched for powdery mildew.Go p.m. resistant hybrids, if you are starting out.Another great plant, Borage. If the butterflies can get past the honeybees:)All three of these are covered in pollinators, including butterflies. I even had numerous Hummingbirds, and Hummingbird Moths.I actually got into an argument, one girl insisted they were baby hummingbirds:)I counted 9 different species of pollinators at work on the Bee Balms, sitting at “my" window having lunch. From a one window vantage point. An unreal, surreal, spectacle!I also have native ironweed, butterfly weed, and hibiscus out back. Remnants of my grandmother's handiwork, no doubt. She just passed at 99, and 9. Butterflies were a favorite of hers to sit and watch. She took great care in introducing these native plants, (in greater #'s) to her backyard.Okra, was another frequently visited nearby plant. It looks like a migratory butterfly festival!Nectar is On Tap!Oh yeah…almost forgot. I put in a 80 x 6 row of mixed pollinator perennial mix out back two years ago. In this pic, I had yet to put in an annual Sunflower backdrop, and my apiary (bee hives) was just going in along the row of flowers..Not pictured Fireweed, Coneflowers not “out” yet. Or Sunflowers plantedHibiscusAmerican Meadows “Midwest Meadows” Pollinatormix: prairie perennials like Purple Coneflower, Butterfly Weed and Black-Eyed Susan, along with nectar-rich annuals like Red Poppy and Lemon Mint.Bottom pic: Buckwheat used in mass plantings.

What do butterflies eat, and how can I attract them to my backyard?

Members of the milkweed family such as butterfly weed provide food for adult butterflies and their larva. On these plants, you should be wary of tiger moth caterpillars as their stiff hairs can pierce the skin of monarch butterfly caterpillars and kill them. A quick tap on the plant with a container beneath the moth caterpillar will knock it into the container where you can relocate it. Bee balm, butterfly bush, columbine, and just about any non GMO fruit tree will attract pollinators including adult butterflies of all kinds. Swallowtail caterpillars love to eat fennel and dill, and cabbage white butterfly caterpillars will eat any member of the Brassicaceae family such as broccoli, kale, cabbage, and the often invasive and destructive garlic mustard.

How can I create a space in my garden that will attract butterflies next year?

Look for plants that are frequently paired with the adjectives "self-seeding", "comes back reliably", "spreads rapidly", "takes over", and so on.Try to avoid "invasive non-native" as these are dangerous and unstoppable.  Check your local state noxious weed list and don't plant those.  For example, Purple Loosestrife "spreads rapidly" but it chokes native plants from your local wetlands.  Liatris is a very nice substitute.Ideally you should choose at least a few wild flowers that are native to your area.Adding to Gail's list you could look at Hesperis matronalis (Dame's Rocket), Evening Primrose, Icelandic or California Poppies, Verbascum (mullein), Galium odoratum (Sweet Woodruff), Phlox.  These have lots of flowers and a  long blooming period or rebloom throughout the summer.  Again, be sure these choices are not on your state's noxious weed list.  And clover in your lawn is another great choice if you allow it to bloom and don't cut the grass too short.Hesperis matronalisNote the pink areas where Hersperis has been declared a noxious weed.  That means that in those particular areas it has proven to be hard to get rid of and adversely affects either native ecosystems or agricultural productivity.

How Do I Get Butterflies To Come In My Yard?

Many butterflies are attracted to what is properly nicknamed, "The Butterfly bush." Different species of butterflies have different preferences of nectar, in both colors and tastes. Try staggaring wild and cultivated plants, as well as blooming times of the day and year. Groups of the same plants are easier to see that singulary planted flowers. Here are some flowers you can grow to attract butterflies: Aster, Black-eyed Susan, Butterfly weed, Coreopsis, Daylilies, Golden rod, Hibiscus, Lavender, Lilac, Marigold, (as mentioned earlier) Butterfly bush, Oxeye dasies, Purple Cone flower, Red bud, Rosemary, and Verbena. Another way to attract butterflies is a butterfly feeder.

How do i attract a butterfly to my hand?

a butterfly lit on me once... it was after the salty sweat on my leg.... we were paddleboating on a lake.....it stayed for the longest time!...I offered it a drop of Sundrop soda, too, but it preferred the sweat.... they seek needed salt and minerals from things like mud puddles and stones with a little water on them or sandy creek-banks.... so I'd guess if you had something of that order on your hand, you'd be a hit!!...altho, I'd expect those in the garden there to be well fed and not that needy, either..... but I'd still wipe my sweaty forehead with the back of my hand and hope!!!.... enjoy your trip!!!.... bring back pics to share here!!!....

Why do many gardeners plant flowers that attract bees and butterflies?

Because butterflies and especially bees pollinate most of our food crops.
A true gardener knows that every creature that visits their garden has a purpose. Many of those creatures are not entirely welcome, but chemical pesticides will kill the beneficial insects along with the pests. A garden grown naturally will balance itself as nature does.
And I love watching the bees and butterflies go about their business, flitting from flower to flower. tending to my garden. There is nothing more tranquil.
