How To Become A Dolphin/whale Ect Trainer

How to become a Sea World killer whale trainer?

For one thing, you do need a college degree. You may hear that you don't necessarily have to have one, that animal experience is more important... Well, to an extent that is true, but in this situation someone with a college degree would be given preference over someone without one. Majors to look at would be marine biology, zoology, or even psychology, etc. To gain animal experience you should start volunteering at zoos, or in your case aquariums would probably be better. You may eventually get hired on there, and that will give you even more experience. At the very least you would need a year of experience, but for Sea World, again, preference would be given to applicants with more experience, and with related experience. I'm not really sure on salary, but it should be pretty decent. You do have to be an exceptionally strong swimmer, and there are swimming tests, wetsuit tests, and microphone tests that you have to pass before you are even considered for an interview.

Here is a link to one of the Sea World websites that lists FAQ's. From the list at the top, click the Animal Training and Careers link and it will take you directly to questions and answers about become a trainer at Sea World:

How do you become a penguin trainer?

First you need to become a zookeeper/aquarist.  The best way to get into the field is with a foundation of education (preferably zoology, etc) and experience.  To get experience, volunteering at your local zoo/aquarium/wildlife rehab. is a great start.  Zookeeping/aquarists love their jobs, so openings are rare.  I've been told there are about 500 full-time zookeeper/aquarist jobs posted each year within AZA zoos/aquariums, of those about 450 are filled by people currently working at a zoo/aquarium.  Getting into this kind of work is a multi-year commitment.  I started volunteering at my local zoo when I was 12-years-old.

How do you become an orca whale trainer at Sea World?

It's highly preffered that you achieve a degree in psychology rather than marine bio. Training methods are based on psychological priciples of classical and operant conditioning without understanding those it's difficult to work in any modern zoo or aquarium. You must be a strong swimmer and pass a rigorous swim test, be a good public speaker and be SCUBA certified, you also need experience working hands on with animals.

Can dolphins and whales live in any type of water?

Dolphins adapt to both fresh and marine waters. There are river adapted species found in India, S. America and Asia. Salt water species seem to do less well in fresh water and become prone to skin growths.

The echlocation and calling varies with water density in fresh versus saline waters so the species adapt for either fresh or saline.

The marine Cetacea do not drink salt water they acquire most of their water by eating prey containing fresh water: fish & squid. Like desert dwelling organisms they use counter current flow to draw water out of their urine. When fasting, due to lack of prey, they will drink a few ml per kg a day.

Marine Mammal Trainer...???

I am interested in becoming a marine mammal trainer, but I was wondering if there were any jobs like that but slightly different.
With similar requirements. Is there any other place than sea world?

How come dolphins and whales don't get nitrogen sickness without decompressing?

Just like with humans, breath hold diving doesn't require decompression because you are not breathing compressed air at depth.
