How To Become A Natural Hair Model

How do I become a natural hair stylist in Atlanta?

There are many schools that offer only a hair design program that covers skills such as cutting, coloring and styling hair. These are often referred to as hair design schools, a term used mostly in Canada.

Schools that offer cosmetology degrees have crafted their curricula to address all of these categories. However, when you are in cosmetology school, chances are you will concentrate your studies in a particular area, such as nail health, manicures and pedicures, or hair styling.

When a school offers a program or curriculum in cosmetology, it generally refers to the study of hair styling, skin-care, nail care, and make-up.

So yes you HAVE to go to school. It's illegal to practice in a salon without one. You'll have to complete a certain number of hours of training. Beauty licensing laws and requirements vary by state, as do reciprocity and transfer regulations. This information can be found from several sources. Start by viewing your state-by-state license requirements.

Cosmetology school costs money also. You most likely will not be able to attend a decent school for free. The price also varies some schools offer financial aid, others don't. It really just depends on your state.

As to the one school that you should go to, since you want to study African hair and techniques you'll need to go to one that studies that. Understand that you'll learn different techniques than what you would have learn at white own beauty school such as advanced coloring techniques.

I would Suggest Dudley's But unfortunately I don't see any Dudley's for your state But form what I hear dudley's in south Carolina is amazing! Unless your willing to travel I suggest you look around.

Lastly, remember that you learning the basics the rest you'll really have to learn on your own because research on African have and practices are limited but every now again there will be studies on African hair that you should stay current on that are published in catalogs and online. This is a continual learning process.

Do you need to keep your natural hair color if you want to become a model?

There are only a few instances where the models where required to drastically change their hair… I mean, chopping off the hair, coloring it a different color with the models freaking out, crying etc. This happened only on this exaggerated, unrealistic and scripted shitshow, called “America’s Next Top Model”… and they did that for dramatic effect. In real life, it’s more like a discussion between the booker and the model to see what both are comfortable with, if the model wants to change her look and how the agent thinks that the brand of the model should be marketed and developed. The crucial thing is… whatever your current hair looks like should be the first one or two photos in your book and on your compcard. If you change your hair and it’s different from the compcard, you have to bring your compcard and book up to the current look.A few years ago, we booked a model for a shoot and she had this outstanding look with a great afro… when she came to the set, she had it straightened and didn’t look anything as her compcard. We booked her specifically for her look and hair, as we had a shoot with diversity, meaning lots of different ethnicities, etc.Luckily, she went to the bathroom… and “fixed her hair” and it bounced back and we had an amazing shoot. But that’s just to illustrate how important it is that your compcard reflects your most current look.Hope that helps!

How can I become a runway model?

Modeling is not what it used to be- if you have something special about you, you can still have lots of success in this industry even if your body isn’t perfect, you’re not quite tall (but you really do need to be at least 5′ 6″) and you’re not traditionally ‘beautiful’. Because the ‘rules’ are so much less strict these days, it can’t hurt to try! The process below costs no money and very little time. All you have to do is take a few polaroids (nowadays they’re called “digitals” more frequently) and either take them with you to a bunch of open calls in your area, or email them directly to the agencies you would want to represent you. Your digitals should NOT be fancy. They’re meant to show your raw potential. No makeup. No crazy hair. Basic, form flattering clothing. Find some natural light near a window. Take 3–8 photos of yourself (not selfies, use a friend or a self-timer) at different angles and perspectives (full body, 3/4 body, face, profile, etc). You can print them out or upload them to your smart device.Next, go to Models.com - The Faces of Fashion for a list of the most reputable agencies, their contact info, and when they have their open calls. Have your polaroids handy and either show up to OC or send em in via email and you should know whether or not you have any offers within a few days, if not immediately on site. If you go to open call, please show up with natural hair and makeup. If you don’t hear back from an email submission, it’s a no. Don’t hassle the agency, though do feel free to resubmit if you’ve done anything to change or improve your image.*PS- you should know that runway modeling isn’t much of a career! Runways don’t typically pay a high enough rate to be able to pay your bills on those alone. Plus they only happen in bulk a couple times per year. E-commerce modeling is the #1 way to make a stable career for most models, as they happen nearly every day and pay anywhere from $500–$5,000 per day (as opposed to editorials, which generally pay $250 tops- yes, even for the top print magazines, and runways which rarely pay more than $1,000).
