How To Care For Sulcata Tortoise Hatchlings

Is it normal for sulcata tortoise hatchlings to blow bubbles from their nose occasionally?

Hello this could be a couple things. This can be a sign that he is over stressed, the area is to dry, and or that he has a upper resp infection.

what are your temps? * You can get a heat lamp or emitter to maintain temos. If you allow fluctuation then you will have p[roblems that may cost you the tort liife.

are you using the uvb light and heat emitters?
What is your substrate?
No spinache it is a blocker that will stop your tortoise from digesting and using the calciums in the food you give which will lead to even larger issues

How much do sulcata tortoises cost?

You can get a young one for about $50 - 75; adult specimens will be around $200 or so. I would also recommend that you read until your eyeballs fall out about Sulcata and their care. These get HUGE, about 2.5 - 3 feet long and weigh over 100 lbs, this is not a practical indoor tortoise to keep. Because the tortoise gets so large, it can also be destructive to your yard and property when kept outside. Bigger animals in general eat A LOT more food, as you can imagine, and the diet of these tortoises needs to be mostly grasses, like timothy hay, orchard grass, and bermuda grass, with a little bit of dark leafy greens; the food alone can get expensive. These tortoises do not brumate (reptile version of hibernation) and need to be kept warm all year round. Here's some recommended reading for you; it has info on every tortoise (and turtle) in the world. You can see if a Sulcata is right for you, or if a smaller species is better suited for you:

My hatchling sulcata tortoise is not pooping.?

Is my sulcata tortoise sick?

Hiii...!!!!
I'm also owing Sulcata tortoise..!!! I understood what's going on with your tort(I suggest to plz specify his name)!!! There's nothing to worry..... but care is still needed..!!!
Is the weather cold in your area???? Coz in winter they hibernate, and doesn't eat for a couple of days and if there's no sunrays in the area they even don't move...!!!
His skin is shedding as you told and the white spot around his eyes, for this I would suggest you to give him water to drink... there may be need of water in his body and also keep in mind that they need calcium in their diet...... So give him Tomatoes, Lady-figures, cucumber and other fruits and vegetables that he likes to eat...!!!! Let him spend some time under the mild sun-rays daily.....!!!
Finally the noise he's making..... if its like some hissing from the nose, its a way to show their disliking for something......as I've noticed....!!! If we disturb them sleeping then they make such noises.....!!!!! And if its like sneezing or you feel some liquid-ness in that sound than this is a matter to worry about..... He must be caught cold. For this give him a warm atmosphere and mild sunlight.

Sulcata Tortoise Nose is running a little?

Yes! Take him to a vet. He most likely has a cold, or it could be a more serious respiratory infection. Call around to local vets and find a place that takes care of reptiles. Turtles can go downhill pretty quickly, I wouldn't wait to take him in.

Baby sulcata tortoise nose has bubble popping?

This is a sign of a respiratory infection and will probably need to be treated with antibiotics. Otherwise it could be fatal. He will need vet care as soon as possible. Meanwhile, make sure he is kept warm.

I am including a sulcata care sheet; it may prove useful.

Is common yard grasses safe for a baby sulcata tortoise?

I have a hatchling baby sulcata tortoise(around 2 inches long) and he loves roaming around the yard. Everytime he gets out, he goes to eating the grasses in the yard. They are just common yard grasses, with some clover and crab grass mixed in. There are no pesticides nor herbisides used in our yard.

Is this safe for my hatchling to eat? Should it be given in limited amounts?

Sulcata tortoise bedding, feeding questions?

I also have a Sulcata who is just a little over a year old. For bedding I use sterile playground sand, which I get at Lowe's, a home improvement store for just under $5 a bag. It's clean and a lot less messy when you pour it. I also put a layer of newspaper on the bottom to soak up any excreted fluids, if you know what I mean. You will need to get the UV lights, which I'm sure you know. I use a 100 watt white bulb for 12 hours during the day and a 75 watt red bulb at night that doesn't conflict with it's sleep cycle. I use a calcium supplement powder called ReptoMIn (I believe). It's just a white powder. Make sure to follow the directions very carefully. Not enough can cause soft shell while too much can cause pyramiding (which is really bad). For food I use a pellet made for tortoises, but I got it from the breeder I got my tortoise from. They also love grasses, hays, alfalfa, spinach, and romaine lettuce (never iceberg). They can also eat dandelion flowers and leaves (not the stems, they are poisonous). If you have any more questions please email me at taciturntalker@yahoo.com like I said, I have one at home and am more than happy to have found someone else who has one too! ~Rae~

Sick sulcata tortoise has pneumonia, no reptile vet ! need home cure !?

According to the previous questions you've asked, the tortoises have been sick for a very long time and you've done nothing about it. Shame on you!

Secondly, it is illegal to sell turtles and tortoises that are under 4" in carapace length, which means that whoever sold them to you is selling reptiles illegally and it is possible that they were sick before you ever got them.

Third, if your sister DOES work at a local vet, they would be able to look up what antibiotic or other treatment could be effective and she could help you with treatment.

You need to tell me where you live, not the exact address, but what large town and what state you are in so that I could see what vet or organization could be of assistance to you.

Yes, there are antibiotics at the local pet store that you could use, but considering how long they have been sick and according to your previous posts how sick they are, it is far better to get them to someone who knows what they are doing to administer treatment.

If you insist that you are going to 'diy', check the Merck Veterinary Manual and they will tell you what could be effective. If you don't understand the Merck Manual, good luck.
