How To Critique Other People

People who can't take criticism?

I took a creative writing class this year, and I saw this problem A LOT. There were about 14 students in my class, and we all were from different writing backgrounds. There were some people (like myself) who were more into academic writing and had never seriously tried our hand at creative fiction. Others had written fiction before and were just in the class to get feedback as to whether or not they should continue. However, the most annoying students were those who had been writing original fiction "all their lives" and made it perfectly clear that they were not in the class to be critiqued, but to critique OTHERS. They had no problem being down right rude and telling other people what needed to be fixed with their work, but if anyone suggested so much as a change in punctuation in THEIR writing, they would get really defensive. In my opinion, these people cannot accept negative feedback because they have never gotten it before. They more than likely only show their work to family members and close friends who over-exaggerate their talent, and they end up getting a big head as a result. One thing that my creative writing teacher taught me is that there is ALWAYS room for improvement. Even Stephen King participates in writing workshops, having others critique his work before he sends it off. And if Stephen King isn't too proud to accept criticism, the rest of us should not think we are too good.

Do you think that a site that asks for people to critique other people's work to allow their work to be critiqued is counterproductive?

I sense a resistance here to having to critique the work of others. Why?Look, as a long time member of Critique Circle Online Writing Workshop where last I checked I was in the top 100 all time activity rank, I fully endorse such a system.Sure, I get some critiques where it is evident the author lacks experience, but even those critiques always offer at least one small nugget of advice. Likewise, I get critiques from people who show great knowledge and provide real value in what they post. Do you think the good ones started that way? Unlikely. By constantly writing critiques while posting their own work and seeing critiques, they have learned the craft of writing. I know, from my own experience, how true that is. Writing critiques is every bit as much a learning tool as receiving them is.My guess is you suffer from a thin skin, a malady common among many new writers. One of the first things I learned was how to accept every critique, no matter how poorly crafted. Think not of the author of that critique as another writer, but as a consumer. One who has bought your novel. The critique they write to suggest changes is the review the consumer will write when rating your book. If that review is poor, you’re toast.

Why do some people act like experts and critique other people?

For some, it’s not acting. They ARE subject matter experts Oh, maybe not on the topic at hand, but on logical thinking, and rhetoric, and research, and the scientific method So whie they may not now anything about left handed smoke shifters or what ever you’re prosing on about, they can spot bushit

Is this a good paragraph PLEASE CRITIQUE?

It wasn't bad, but it could use some improving here and there.

The first part of this paragraph is very choppy. You use a ton of short sentences, which theoretically is good since you're trying to make a fast paced, tense narrative. However, it read choppily and haltingly, almost as if you were just listing what happened instead of writing a story.

The second thing I noticed was that you go from an action packed scene to one where the character is describing her looks. Don't do that in the same paragraph. Description slows the story down, so I would really avoid doing that during a scene like the one you're writing... save that for a slower part of the story :)

I liked your description of the lightning, ballerinas of electricity, it really painted a visual picture for me. However, I didn't feel as if the description of being electricuted was accurate. Seeing as this is first person, and seeing as someone who is struck by lightning most likely becomes immediately unconscious after being struck, I wouldn't go into the detail that she felt, like the shaking and the rolling of the eyes... most likely she's not going to be aware of that. Probably all that she's going to feel is pain. Also, there's a bit of a content error here... why would she be struck by lightning when she's next to a house? Houses have grounding stakes built into them for such a purpose... unless, of course, she attracted the lightning to herself...interesting

Other than that, it was okay. keep working on it, read it out loud to yourself to see how it sounds. It'll get there, it just takes editing and editing and more editing :) It is my personal opinion that writers should not be called writers, but editors :)

I hope I could help,
Good luck and happy writing

And I would really appreciate your (Or anyone else's :)) help with my story. Thanks :)

What are some communities where people critique each others' music?

If for electronic you should definitely look at:IDMf - Electronic Music & Production Forum - IDMforums.comWork In Progress / Advice Requested / Show & Tell / Artist Showcase / Mix-OffsSongs, Songwriting and Music ProductionMusic in General:Music/Off-Topic - Sputnik Music ForumsUpload your music to Soundcloud (to make it easier for everyone to access it) and send your stuff to EDM review blogs like this one: Electronic Music Critic  or google search edm reveiw - Google Search find the contact email and ask them to critique your work in progress. But honestly at the end of the day you have to be prepared to hear things you might not agree with and you have to remember people behind a computer can either spew out crap or actually give you workable critique. Also if you're doing music, do what you like but keep an open mind. There is always room for improvement. You might be terrible or amazing starting off but you have to start somewhere to become better.

How do I make a good YouTube video that is critiquing other people’s art?

Critiquing is OK, as long as it doesn’t cross the line and become belittling, hateful or mean.Constructive criticism is fine. Making fun of someone because they aren’t as good as you”Think” they should be, will get you little views, little to no admiration, and could end up costing you viewers and subscribers.Critique all you want, just don’t be mean about it.

What pleasure do people get by criticizing others?

I think people of this kind are usually very insecure, the pleasure is in having the right answer, like as if they´ve learn the lesson well and they´ll get a cookie. But they don´t make it out of bad will, quite the opposite. They may tell you that your hairstyle looks awful, but usually hoping you´ll change it and have a better life by doing so. Say you have awful breath but nobody tells you, you may get offended by hearing it, but it may help you to know it, since you can change it. It´s people that usually are very perfectionist and very critique of themselves too. They´ll cricize things that seem important to them. So, they think that by doing that they´re making the world right. Also, what Vaishnavi Nv said seems true, but probably it´s related with the fact that they want to be superior to be liked by other people. If they criticize too much that may lead to isolation, and since they try to be perfect, they don´t see why that´s happening, so they tend to get more critic and think it´s beacause other people mediocrity that they´re not appreciated. You should try to explain them without huring their ego (cause they´re very senstive about it) that the critiques should be said in some other more senstitive way (and that sometimes certain corrections are not important at all). In order to say this is better to use their logic, like “man, you´d be much cooler if you stop crtizing everyone all the time, you know that?”. Usually they´ll figure out that at some point in life. If you say it right, not offending them, I think you´ll be doing some good to the world.

What makes someone being so overly critical of other people's appearance?

That happens when a person is overly critical of themselves first. How much a person criticizes others be it for appearance or anything else, is equal to how much that person criticizes him/herself.The level of self-criticism and outward criticism of others, is equal. That person, is comparing him/herself to others and vice versa. They critique both ways equally.Acting this way (overly critical), causes very low self-esteem. It creates a need to belittle others to accomplish an illusion of superiority. It gives that person a very temporary boost of confidence that isn’t authentic or real (that’s why it’s temporary). What makes a person this way…that person judges others, so in return they also judge themselves twice as harshly, causing low self-esteem etc… It’s a ripple effect when you judge other people, it causes all kinds of problems.Just understand, people who criticize other people in any way, be it large or small, do the same exact things towards themselves.
