How To Deal With Speech Anxiety

Speech anxiety???????

I do the same thing, and it is so difficult to over come, I have actually passed out in class before. What I do now, is I talk to the teacher, see if I can present with a partner, it helps to know the information with someone else.

Since you have to give the speech tomorrow, I guess the best thing that you can do is try to remember as much information as you can, then it doesn't feel so much like your being graded, more like you know what your talking about and its just facts your telling everyone. Another thing, don't look at people directly, you'll instantly feel like they are judging you when this really isn't the case. Don't drink or eat a lot of caffeine, make sure you are not hungry, it makes a person shake more. I know it is so cliche, but deep breaths before, during and after your speech. If you feel like your stuttering too much, Take a quick deep breathe, breathing out as hard as you can. It calms your head a bit, and then keep going. I wish you luck

Ways to get rid of speech anxiety?

These tips may help

Tips for doing a presentation

Know your subject matter really well and practice reading to your dog or just out loud to yourself ahead of time.

Look over the heads of the class at a point on the wall in the back of the room. The class will think you are looking at them, and the teacher will think you are looking at your audience.

Don't notice any reaction from the class. Their reaction doesn't matter, but it might make you feel more nervous.

Concentrate on what you are saying rather than how you are saying it.

Don't try to keep from stuttering as that will make you stutter more. If you stutter, just let it happen.

Maintain a steady pace, not too fast, and don't get in a hurry to "get it over with."

Speak in a relaxed manner and pause every so often.

Start into words easily keeping your lips, tongue, and jaw relaxed.

Realize that stuttering occurs more often when you are trying NOT to stutter, when you are under stress, and when you are tired.

How do I to get rid of speech anxiety?

I have severe speech anxiety too, and I think what you should do is go back and analyze your body behavior while you're giving a speech. Where do you look? How often do you pause? Are you fidgeting and moving your hands too much? How do you stand? I have noticed that I find it particularly difficult to even talk one-on-one when I have to tell a story and talk for a chunk of time continuously. I don't know why but it makes me nervous, and my eyes get all big, and I forget about blinking and I'm a mess. When I'm talking in public, also I have noticed I have an issue with where I should look while talking because sometimes people just stare at one person in the crowd throughout the whole speech, or some people avoid eye contact altogether and just scan the room, both of which are not engaging methods of giving a speech. I watched several videos on this, and the best way to position your eyes is to look at one person and talk a few lines, finish a thought, then look at another person and repeat, this way, you're making eye contact with several people, and trust me it is more engaging. Also, the thing about you feeling less smart, I've met so many people that are not smart but are very quick witted, and funny or just extremely confident, and they get away with not being smart, or too knowledgeable and people love them. You should take things less seriously- being the smartest guy in the room is not the biggest thing in life, but try to improve your confidence. Study people who are good at giving speeches and see what they do while talking, how their bodies move and what not. Practice. Also, develop a thicker skin where you don't get affected by people's judgement and criticism so much. I used to very sensitive to what people thought of me too, but within a couple years, almost unconsciously I have changed, and I almost find it funny when people criticize me, and it's not an issue for me anymore. It is very possible to change dramatically, you have to reposition your priorities! Focus on having a good time and doing your best and if people hate it, well, you shouldn't live to please them anyway! Good luck.

Public Speaking Anxiety?

I trained as an actor and suffered terrible anxiety and stage fright in the first year of my 4 year Bachelors degree. here are some things my tutors taught me:

1/ Being anxious prior to being on stage means you have talent: no nerves = no talent

2/ being overly anxious prior to a performance can mean you need to concentrate on what your task is instead of what you are scared of: really, really concentrate on doing your best and the subject matter as opposed to the audience.

3/ Most times people don't even recognize that you are nervous and if they do they are rooting for you and wanting you to do well.

4/ They often don't notice the changes in your voice

5/ Speak slowly and breathe. It's perfectly fine to pause. it's perfectly fine to take a pause and take a breath before continuing.

6/ Coping with nerves before speaking publicly is not only natural but it's an acquired skill to deliver confidently and if you have to do it often you will get used to it.

Practice, practice, practice! Know your stuff like the back of your hand and that will be an enormous help.

When you have to read out loud from your desk it is a great technique to make your eyes look at two or three words *ahead* of what you are reading out loud at the time. practice at home.

How do I overcome speech anxiety when I'm in the UNI?

Your best method of overcoming speech anxiety is to join Toastmasters. This organization is a self-help group where you deliver speeches and other club members give you feed-back what you could improve. It teaches you how to think on your feet by doing short 2 to 3 minute speeches. But you also give formal longer speeches that you prepare beforehand. Between all of the practicing you learn to let go of your anxieties and concentrate instead on a perfect delivery of your speech.Another approach of overcoming speech anxiety is to see a clinical hypnotist. You can be taught to visualize yourself under hypnosis giving a speech. Practice in your inner mind how you would speak without anxiety. A posthypnotic suggestion is given that you will remember everything you practiced under hypnosis. When you actually have to give a speech, you will do whatever you were taught under hypnosis and not experience anxiety. It may take several hypnotherapy sessions to completely control your anxiety.

How do I do an oral presentation with speech anxiety?!?

Basically I have anxiety and my entire life speaking in front of people has been one of my biggest fears(speech anxiety) On Tuesday I spent 6 hours working on a project and was planing to do an oral presentation the next day. This is independent and 10 - 15 minutes which is the most I've ever had to do, so I've been shitting myself thinking about it and my anxiety was TERRIBLE leading up to it. I had an anxiety attack the morning of and my mom left me go in late. But I also took a Xanax... .25 and I don't usually take pills but i just couldn't stand my anxiety and was hoping this would work and I could overcome this presentation like everyone else. I get to class, 3rd to go, and I start hyperventilating. Right before Its my turn I started having a panic attack. I was shaking and my heart was beating really fast and I started crying and had to leave the classroom. I felt so pathetic and this lasted about 20 minutes. The next person just went and after some friends calmed me down outside I found the courage to come back in the class. I didn't have to go that day, and my teacher was very understanding and was showing me how to breathe (because I almost fainted) anyways. Guessing Xanax either didn't do anything or just made things worse but it's not an option and now I have to go TOMORROW to present. Everyone knows I had an anxiety attack and i can't have another one I hate myself and body for not being able to handle these type of things like other people?! What do I do?!
