One thing you must know is that when you do “permanent delete” (the Shift + Delete or Empty Recycle Bin), the data isn’t really going anywhere. What your OS does is that it marks the space as blank but in reality the data is still there and that part of your drive (doesn’t matter if internal drive or portable drive) will be over-written when you save something else to the drive.By doing “permanent delete” thing, the data will still be recoverable by Data Recovery Programs very easily.So the best option for making sure that no one can trace that file or recover it is to over write it with something which is not personal and for which you don’t worry about getting tracked or recovered. The are utilities which can do this job for you.For Mac OS, there is this in-built option in Disk Utility called “Erase Securely” (“US Department of Defence” standards of permanently erasing data) which overwrites the empty space 7 times to make sure the file is not recovered or traced back.For Windows, CCleaner’s “Wipe Free Space” feature does the same function. It overwrites the disk space many times to make sure the original file is not recovered.
