How To Get A Gag Reflex

How can I get rid of my gag reflex?

Eliminating your gag reflex would require somehow selectively damaging/desensitizing cranial nerves IX and X (mostly X). Pretty sure this isn't possible without trauma being involved...sorry... :-(For most people, a continuation of the gag reflex can be suppressed with varying degrees of success once the initial gag happens, and with things like brushing the back of one's tongue, holding it out for the 10 seconds needed without throwing up isn't normally too difficult[1]. Desensitization doesn't really work for reflexes as far as I know, they don't have as complex a negative feedback loop as something like pain signals. I'm assuming the asker has already tried suppression and it didn't work...?[1] Honestly, I'd say brushing the back 1/4 of your tongue is pretty low-yield, and I would suggest consulting your dentist about this. I'm not a dentist, but I do know that there's a little valley in the pharynx known as the vallecula which serves as your oral cavity's reservoir of bacteria--and you're not going to get that by brushing. For the visual folks, see the space between the tongue and the epiglottis in this image: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fil...

How do I get rid of my gag reflex?

OK. not sure of what you mean exactly. if you literally gag at the thought or smell of something, you have a hyperactive gag reflex and the best you can do is try(not pretty if unsuccessful)to control it by deep mouth breathing and hard swallowing while getting clear of the stench or changing your thoughts.
If you are talking about your bodies reaction to something in your mouth, then that is biological and cannot be GOTTEN RID OF! It can however be controlled. You can practice controlling this reflex by:
1. Placing your finger on your tongue and slowly moving it back toward your throat until you feel the gag.
2. Now stop! *Do not remove your finger*
3. With your finger in this position, open your throat and take slow deep breaths from your mouth(3 or 4).
4. Now switch to deep breaths from your nose(3 or 4).
5. Now switch back to your throat and take a few more breaths from your throat until you feel the gag urge subside.
6. Once the urge subsides, move your finger forward a little more until the urge returns-then repeat steps 2,3,4,5&6.

It will take some time and some practice to master but the idea is to be able to go a little further each time. Be patient with yourself- and try to practice over the toilet or sink(just in case). Good Luck! and why did you want to 86 the gag reflex? :-)

How can I get back my gag reflex?

Have you had a stroke or some other condition that has induced dysphagia? Or perhaps medication that is impairing your gag reflex (benzodiazepines, neuroleptics, anticonvulsants, some corticosteroids, some antibiotics, anticholinergics, antipsychotics, antiparkinsonian drugs, anxiolytics, etc.)?

Depending on the cause, various treatments ranging from physical therapy to medications exist. Most popular is of course dietary modification and swallow therapy. Surgical dilatation can also be done, if warranted and appropriate, as can cricopharyngeal myotomy, where the cricopharyngeus muscle is disrupted to reduce resistance of the pharyngeal outflow tract. It really depends on the cause in the first place. The important goal of treatment is to avoid aspiration and improve nutritional status of the patient, so working with a specialist in swallowing disorders to obtain optimum therapy for the individual case is key.

Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, MD has an excellent swallowing center that might be worth looking into.

Good luck!

How do you get rid of or reduce your gag reflex?

One of my guy friends suggested "squeezing" your thumb until it hurts - then your mind is not on it. You can also think about something else when you start feeling your gag reflex. Think about something funny.. usually that stops the reflex period.

* OH! And try NOT to provoke your gag reflex when you brush your teeth and such. I never had one until I forced myself to vomit one day because I was sick and I had to. Now I have to "train" myself to not activate my gag reflex. You should try and train yourself, too, however you want. Stick a finger down there, see exactly how you can stop yourself from gagging.

Good luck! <3 Lol.

Can you develop a gag reflex if you don't have one?

Hi I don't have a gag reflex, but I want one. If I stick a toothbrush down my throat I gag a bit but I never puke. Is there any way I can get myself to puke? Like, make my gag reflex more sensitive? Thanks!! And fyi this is not for bulimia purposes.

How should I be dealing with my awful gag reflex?

It depends a little on the source of your gag reflex, but the principle will be the same for either type. If you want to improve (diminish) your gag reflex from having something in your mouth, you will need to work on this in small increments over a long period of time. Try inserting something benign into your mouth, such as a spoon or anything else without points or sharp edges. Insert it until you just begin to feel your gag reflex kick in. To train yourself, you must be relaxed and in complete control of your body. Being relaxed is most important. If you panic, your gag reflex will take control. Once you reach the beginning of the reflex, insert the object slightly more and hold it there as long as you can.You will need to repeat the process of inserting, holding, going a little farther and holding (all while remaining completely relaxed) many, many, many times. The more you do this, the better you’ll get and the less your gag reflex will respond. It may take thousands of attempts or more, so if you really want to overcome your reflex, stick with it.If your gag reflex is the result of something you taste, smell, see, or hear, you will need to desensitize yourself to the stimulus which causes the reflex. Let’s say the sight of blood induces your gag reflex. Like what I described above, you will need to condition yourself to the sight in very small but increasing doses over a long period of time. You can start by looking at pictures for brief periods before moving to “live” or in-person blood (so-to-speak). You must remain completely relaxed during your training and clear-headed. If you don’t believe that the stimulus can have an effect on you, you will eventually overcome any gag reflex response. It will take time and a great deal of training/practice.

How do you make yourself vomit if you have no gag reflex?

I have this problem. I have always had a diminished gag reflex. While it's definitely not easy you can make it happen.Syrup of Ipecac is my go-to. I'd keep some in the medicine cabinet for when you need it. If this is because of poison ingestion, check label on said poison to make sure that inducing vomiting is advised, and obviously seek medical help. I personally only have to induce vomiting when my stomach is churning from sickness, or I' ve drank too much sugary alcohol, etc. Also comes in handy when my eyes were bigger than my stomach and Im terribly full and can't stand it. A couple of heaves and the “bowling ball in my abdomen” feeling is gone and I can digest the rest of my dinner comfortably.
