How To Get Backing Tracks For Vocal Covers

Are you allowed to use backing tracks on YouTube?

Most music is subject to copyright, and therefore you can't use it as a backing track. You may have paid for it, but not everyone else who listen to it through your video has. There are however some ways to get around YouTube's ban on music.

YouTube themselves provide a partnership system for artists, allowing them to make money in return for videos. Singers/bands/composers signed up to this partnership allow their work to appear on YouTube in videos, in return for adverts appearing on the video. These adverts then pay for the copyright owner's loss of earnings that you cause by uploading the video.

You can also use Public Domain music, which the creator has deemed free to use. Search the internet for Public Domain or Creative Commons music, and you can use this as much as you like. May creators of this free content ask that you put something in the video description stating where the music came from, but that's all.

I hope this helps.

I agree with Jack Ponissi on this one.One of the best ways to do this (if you have the patience) is to record the main tracks (eg drums, bass and rhythm guitar) in your DAW and then jam along to those tracks. Most cover artists sing or play above a backing track, so why is Kenny G playing What A Wonderful World over the original backing considered ‘blasphemy’ to the music community?

Pat Metheny (guitarist) said it better than any of us can. Here is a link to his response to this recording. If the white text on black background makes it hard to read for you as it does for me, you can copy the text and paste it to a text editor.Pat Metheny on Kenny G[EDIT] I should also mention that playing over backing tracks is VERY unjazz-like, and the criticism of Kenny G is from a jazz point of view. Jazz musicians just shake their heads at pop singers who use backing tracks. I don’t know about the “music” community, but the jazz community is pretty unanimous in their criticism of this appropriation by Kenny G of the greatest jazz musician ever, Louis Armstrong.

Definitely do it acapella.

I personally think using a backing track while doing a cover is quite trashy. Show your viewers what you can do with your voice and as the other user said, using a backing track ultimately makes it a karaoke.

On YouTube you want to sound different and you want your covers to stand out. Using backing tracks often limits you on what you can do with your cover as you try keep pace with the instrumental.

To do this, go to Audio > Visualizations >Scope. Now if your subtitle is named same as the audio file, it will automatically start displaying the lyrics.
