How To Get Into Publishing

Publishing your own anime?

That is going to be very hard for first, you live in the US, anime come from Japan so if you are truly aiming for the publication of your own anime, first get settled in Japan. Of course, you can try to publish it as a western animation instead.

Second, you must at least gain some fame for storywriting and all, I mean nobody would want to publish a work of a nobody as they don't get profit from it. Get started by publishing a few book and if they are best seller or somewhere there, you stand a chance. I mean, you book, if popular enough, might get an animated or live action.

Lastly, like I said before, to make it an anime but not western animation style, you have to go to Japan as I don't think the west would create anime like the japanese. Learn Japanese and see if you can draw manga or write light novel.

However, if you are able to get enough money and learn Japanese, thought it is not really realistic, you could start your own studio in Japan.

I mean, at least one people that is not a local in Japan manage to make a name there, and he is Danny Choo. He worked hard for it and he achieved his dream of making it to Japan.

How can I get into publishing as a career in the US?

Two of the doors into publishing you might consider are through the visual (graphic design, cover design) or through editing. Either one calls for a highly developed set of skills and the ability to demonstrate those skills through a portfolio of excellent work, ideally done professionally. Just a couple of tips about either of those entrances. Book design is essentially package design, so if you have the opportunity to study that, take it. Editing books calls for both developmental editing (ways to improve the tone, organization, functionality of the content) and copy editing (for grammar, punctuation, spelling, etc.) A good book editor can do both.

How do I get get into publishing?

Speaking as someone who has occasionally worked in laboratories PAPERS are a result and a by product, not the not principal process and product. The principal activities that result in PAPERS are conceptualization, confirmation, and collegiality. If so you do not understand those words, you have not acquired the basic capacity to produce PAPERS.While collegiality was the last activity mentioned, it is actually the basic activity required to produce PAPERS. The skills needed are created through collegiality. The work that results in PAPERS requires the products and assistance of colleagues. The purpose of PAPERS is to reveal your work to colleagues, to validate your work by colleagues and to serve as the basis for the futher work of colleagues. To produce PAPERS you must develop the capability and do the work first. And most of all you must learn and utilize the rules and methods that colleagues have for producing PAPERS. PAPERS are not as important as are your colleagues.

Is self-publishing ever worth it?

I know that some people on here have had slight success with self-publishing, getting their books reviewed and read, but most of the time those self-published books seem to shrink into obscurity.

Would you say it is worth it? Would you ever self-publish, and if you have self-published, did you get a sense of achievement?

What kind of job is desktop publishing?

You would get a degree in Computer Science, Digital Graphics Design (or something equivelent to that). Desktop Publishing included all types of print including (but not limited to), magazine design, flyers, brochures, posters, advertising, menu's, book covers, anything in print work. You would learn about typography, layout techniches, marketing, among a ton of other stuff. It is a lot of fun, especially if you are good at design. Programs you might need to learn would be Photoshop, Indesign, Illustrator...
This is a great field to get into, there is such a demand for it and you can use it at almost any job.
Good luck!!!

How do I get into Video Game Publishing?

You'll need to have either applicable skills, transferable experience, or know somebody at a publisher -- preferably all three. Start by studying the publishers where you'd like to work, become familiar with the history of their business and who the key employees are. Read their job postings obsessively, and learn what requirements they're looking for in specific positions you're interested in holding. You may discover there's some training or certifications you could get that would make you more suited for a job.Attend industry conferences like GDC or Casual Connect, where you can attend panels and get to meet people. Start a blog about the aspects of game publishing you're interested in. It may not ever get read by many people, but it serves as a great reference when looking for a position, particularly if the following is true: You've posted regularly for a good length of time (shows commitment and responsibility), it's well-written (an important skill for many positions), and it's thoughtful (showing knowledge and insight about the business, or even just the ability to select interesting topics, is a good sign for a prospective employer). Good luck!

Is it a good time to go into publishing?

Yes, you should pursue publishing if it is your dream! Publishing is made up of people who are super passionate about books and care to see the industry surviving. We could always use younger people for fresh perspectives. That said, like many creative industries, the pay is very low and growth level is nil. It sounds like the major free fall in profits is over, so a job will be relatively secure, but growth and upward mobility is rare. There's a lot of competition for jobs in publishing, and not many jobs. I would plan on taking a course in publishing or even getting a master's degree. Also learn about ALL the jobs publishing has to offer: there's much, much more out there than the well-known fields like editorial. It's become a bit of an insider's joke how often publishing interns proclaim their intention to be a famous editor someday but can't even tell you what the production department does. If I were you, I would look into learning about ebooks as much as possible: how to code and produce them, major ebook distributors and their platforms, copyright and legal aspects, etc. I always see a need for tech-savvy young people in ebook creation with new ideas about how to grow that part of sales. Good luck!

Self publishing vs mainstream publishing?

I'm in the same boat as you because I too am deciding on whether to self publish my book, or go with a mainstream publisher as I too am a first time author. Here is my advice from what I've been researching over the past couple of weeks. Self publishing is easier than mainstream, because anyone can self publish. Mainstream, first you have to find an agent, they have to review your work, then edit it, they submit it to possibly publishers. If the book is finally released you end up having to pay the agent, promotional people and owe money to the publisher, and the book many not sell millions, so u would be inmainstream bookstores, but end up making less money. Plus fewer than 5% of books submitted to mainstream publishers actually get published.
As for self publishing you basically have to do everything, and the success of the book depends on how well you can market the book, and the connections that you make. But you have more control, and take in more money. So publicity= mainstream, profit= self publishing

Good luck!

Is it hard to publish a book?

I'm just curious...At first, it seemed kind of easy. Then people start talking about how it is hard to get and agent and publisher. Do you think it's possible for anyone to publish a book? Even...say...an 11th grader maybe?
