How To Get More Space On The D Recovery Drive

I have a c & d drive on my computer. Is there a way to move free space from my d drive to my c drive?

Think of a hard drive like a pie dish. It's round, and has room to put stuff in it. Sometimes, people don't want to make a whole pie, so they put a little divider into it, that sections off a part of it to be used for something else (or not used at all). In technical terms, this is called a 'partition' (a term which you may be familiar with when talking about home renovation; it's basically the same concept).

If your hard drive is home to both your C and D drives, then those are both partitions. In order to give more room to your C drive, you would decrease the size of the partition that is the D drive (if you had originally divided them down the middle, half a pie dish for each, you could maybe bend the divider so that it only sets 1/4th of the dish aside for other purposes).

If your C and D drives are on different hard disks, however, then the only way to get more free space on your C drive is to take things out of it and put them into D. This scenario would have two pie dishes - putting them next to each other doesn't increase the size of either one, they're two seperate containers, so the only way to free up room in one is to take pieces of the pie out and put them into the other one.

I hope this has made you hungry! I mean, helped you! :)

What's Recovery D drive?

This is a partition your computer manufacturer has placed on your hard drive, incase you need to recover your computer back to when you bought it.

My advice is.....dont delete it, you may need it one day.

Help with my HP_Recovery Drive D???

I always get a notice that says I'm running out of space on my HP Recovery (D:) drive and I'm not sure how to free up space because when I click on it to free up space it says I have 0 bytes that I can clean up.

It's rather confusing I have rougly 8GB in the HP recovery D drive and just about all of it is used up only 500mb left. I look to see what is taking up all the space and I can find nothing in there. Is there something wrong with my computer? I've only had this laptop for a month about and I haven't installed anything humongus just microsoft office and spysweeper and those went into C drive. It seems to me that the HP_recovery D drive was FULL when I got the computer, so any help in this matter would be appreciated thanks.

What's the difference between the D and C drive on a computer?

The C drive is the one with the Operating system. If you want to change where the "stuff" get downloaded, then you need to specify the download directory within the program. You can even install programs on the D drive, and have them download into their own native directory.

Look within the program for exatly where that is specified, and change it to where you would like it. I often create a directory called "Download" on the D drive, and then specify that to receive the downloaded files.

My new HP laptop (1TB) has 2 partitions. C is 900 GB and D (recovery) 100 GB. Is there any way to split the C drive into multiple partitions without losing files and windows?

What you should do is resize partition. What is the difference between the Local Disk (C:) and Recovery (D:)?

I've been cleaning out my computer recently and did a recent back up on my passport. I've noticed when I deleted old documents/videos off my computer it had freed the space off the Local Disk. I noticed that my Recovery Disk does not have a lot of space in it and I am not sure why. It would help to know exactly what it does and how I can free up some space on it.

Like I said, I've done a back up, and will be doing another one soon, I've done a disk defragmenter and a disk clean up for both drives. I did not have the computer clean up all the disk since my Windows 7 says it is important to keep error dump files. And I am not so comfortable with formatting stuff I am not familiar with. :\

Still, I have 1.38 GB free of 12.2 in my Recovery.
Again, if some wise one would be so kind as to educate me:
-What is the difference between the 2 disk drives?
-What does the recovery disk do?
-How can I free up space on the recovery drive (if it is possible)?
-Would it be wise to select the "Compress this drive to save disk space" under the properties window?
-Should I back up both my Local Disk and my Recover Disk, or are they both done when I launch the backup tool?
-Anything else I should know for my HP labtop with Windows 7?

How to get more free space/memory on my laptop?

First of all, if you just bought a new laptop, I doubt you'd only have 2 GB free space. And what does 40% free in recovery mean?

First find out How big your Hard Drive is and how much space is left on it.

1. Go to Computer or My Computer
2. Right click the Icon and choose Properties.
3. In the General Tab (the first one that will come up) you will see a Pie Graph of How much is used and how much is free.

4. To clear more space use the Disk Cleanup button in the same General Tab. Check Everything and delete.

5. After that go to the Tools Tab. Click Defragment Now. You should be doing this every week or two in any case. This will free up even more space.

After all that, check that Pie Graph again and see how much space is free. If you still don't have enough, run a search for *.mp3 files and delete all the songs that you're sick of listening to in any case. You can also check for video files which you don't need as well *.avi or *.mpg

Keep your Hard Drive healthy by running the Defragmentation program once every couple of weeks.
