We tell children about Father Christmas, the Easter Bunny among other fictional things. We then tell them they should not lie. How can we justify this?

Children are very creative and do a lot of make believe. Creativity is very important in their development. They have tea parties, talk to dolls and toys which they tell you answer back. It is a game. These games are important as they learn things like sharing and cooperating.Father Christmas falls into the same category. I have never told my children or grand children that any of these things are true but I join in with their games and like a good parent… pretend. Eventually they come to learn the difference between real and imaginary and come to realise that adults play lets pretend games as well which include the fun Father Christmas. They also learn a lot of other things about adults such as kindness and generosity.A lie is only involved if you act deliberately to dupe the child as they grow older.

Is there a difference between Father Christmas and Santa Claus?

The rootes are different. In the 15th century English carols, Christmas was known to be treated as a person known as Sire Christmas - later became more commonly known as Father Christmas. In the 17th century, Puritan leaders refused to include feasts in Christmas celebrations, so in protest, the merry makers decided to give Father Christmas a figure (a jolly old man with beard) to represent the spirit good cheers at Christmas. In the 19th century, Dutch immigrants brought their tradition to America where a mythical figure named Sinterklaas (an old bishop with white beard) brought gifts to children on the day of St. Nicholas on December 6th. Meanwhile in Germany way back, a mythical gift giver named Kristkintl (a blonde child with angel wings) brought gifts on Christmas Eve. Later, that tradition also came to America where Kristkintl became known as Kris Kringle. Meanwhile, Sinterklaas, whose inspiration was St. Nicholas became known as Santa Claus. Later, poem and story writers merged St. Nick, Kris Kringle and Sinterklaas to form Santa Claus. Because of their similarities, Father Christmas and Santa Claus were further merged together, so that now they are one and synonymous.Sources:Santa Claus - WikipediaFather Christmas - WikipediaSt. Nicholas, Santa Claus & Father Christmas on whychristmas?comWhats the difference between father Christmas and santa clause?

I can't afford Christmas gifts this year. Do I tell my kids the truth about Santa or say they were bad?

Let them have fun with Santa for a while longer, they are very young. However it is a great time to teach them of the true meaning of Christmas... giving and that it's the thought that counts. Tell them that this year Santa can't visit lots of kids because he has no more room in his sleigh. Make your kids something special, maybe a photo collage of all of you together or something like that that they can treasure forever. Explain on Christmas Day that it is more important to be with your loved ones than it is to get presents. They are too young to know what a lack of money is but telling them they are bad isn't the answer either. Merry Christmas

How did Santa Claus come to symbolize Christmas?

The answer is very different in different countries. In the US, this was a gradual literary trend in the 19th century. See the link [UN Museum The History and Legend of Santa Claus] from Mark Harrison's answer to What is the history of Christmas tree and Santa Claus? In some countries, Santa Claus doesn’t symbolize Christmas: Spain, for example, where the Three Kings (‘los reyes magos’) bring the presents (on Jan 6th, which is their main day). Is there more to Christmas than just Santa Claus & presents?

In my personal opinion…absolutely!! I personally feel that it is a great time to spend with loved ones and friends. A time where you can start or carry on traditions such as baking cookies together, candy, or making your own stockings. It’s a great time to celebrate and appreciate all that we do have, and in doing so give back to others who are so blessed by volunteering your time at a shelter, soup kitchen, or even a hospital. As I have gotten older it has become more about the time that I spend, and how we spend that time together. Celebrating how lucky we are to have one another, and not so much about the gifts at all. Most of my gifts nowadays I prefer to be ones that I have either baked, or made with my own two hands. These types of gifts come from the heart, and show the recipient that you cared enough to spend the time putting something together for them personally. And rest assured that the gifts that I have given as keepsake type ones are brought out each and every year, and fondly remembered as having been made by me. There is also the gifts that I have made that also remain out throughout the year as well. It brings me great joy and pride to spend the time making/baking these gifts, and to see the smiles that they bring to my loved ones.

Do you believe in Christmas magic?

I definately believe in Christmas magic, its amazing how many people are lit up and happy around the holidays. I have 2 stories, 1 from childhood and 1 from when I was older.
My mom, Dad(stepdad-i consider my dad), sister and myself lived in a small house that had a tiny bedroom upstairs which was my sisters, and a small attic off of that. my stepdad was very creative and took a rope and tied a bell on one end and fed it through a hole in the ceiling of their bedroom closet that went up to the tiny attic upstairs. Well early Christmas morning I would go to wake up my sister, well my dad would come out and say, "guys, I think I hear Santa!!" Well all of a sudden we'd hear sleigh bells coming from above. At the time it startled us and I think we screamed, but after it was all said and done, we'd tell our friends and family that we heard santas sleigh bells. We came to know later that my mom would creep out of bed while my dad was with us, and pull the string to make the sleigh bells ring in the attic. That was just one of the many fun things my mom and dad would do to make Christmas "magical for my sister and I. As for being an adult and experiencing magic, it seems to just be when I'm with my family, we don't see each other much, and around the holiday's we always make the time to spend the day together. even though we have a huge family of more distant relatives, we've cut it down to being just my sister and her kids and husband, me and my husband, and my mom and dad. That may not be super magical to some people but it is to me.
