How To Get Upper Body Strength Fast

Does one need good upper body strength in order to run very fast?

Naturally, strong leg muscles are crucial for running fast, but many runners underestimate the importance of upper body strength for good running performance. The abdominal and back muscles play an important role in stabilizing your upper body. A weak core leads to compensatory movements, thus decreasing your forward propulsion. A Strong upper body is essential for generate energy while running. Without this, the proper arm technique cannot provide optimal support to your legs. An efficient running form helps you to run faster and expend less energy. Well-developed abs and back muscles help protect your spine from the impact of running. Thus, a strong core is essential for minimizing the risk of injury. While your individual body mechanics dictate the exact percentage of the upper body you use while running, your upper body helps with the forward propulsion phase of the running stride. As your body weight is transferred from leg to leg with each stride, the abdominals and biceps are used to stabilize, coordinate and direct the forward propulsive movement. The arms counterbalance the leg movement to direct the momentum in the forward (vs. rotational) direction—allowing you to run more.

Is push-ups and upper body strength important for basketball?

Strength does help. Even at guard, you have to fight through screens and hold off defenders. If you are easily pushed around, it makes it very difficult to get the ball in any good position. As you get older and you play at higher levels, the physical aspect of the game also rises. The amount of contact off the ball gets pretty rough whatever position you play. You have to learn to fight through that and that is where your upper body strength is used.
