How To Get Your Splits

How can I get my splits down?

Depending on your current progress will determine what you should work on. But there are a few keys to help you get closer to your splits.Be consistent: this is the most important thing. Spend time stretching every day, wven if it’s only 10 minutes. I highly recommend following along with some splits videos from Flow with Adee on Youtube.Use props: if you are still quite a ways from splits, try using a yoga strap to pull your legs apart while lying flat on your back. You can also place the steap around the bottom of your feet while sitting with lega out in front of youand pull yourself closer to your feet, keeping your back flat. If you are close but struggling to get the last few inches, try placing yoga blocks, rolled up blankets, or pillows under your feet while in splits. This will allow gravity to pull your hips closer to the ground.Use a wall: as mentioned previously, use a wall to push your feet further apart when stretching for middles splits. Hold at a point where you feel a good stretch in your inner thighs for 30–60 seconds, breathing deeply. Release and then press into it againa nd repeat a few times. You can also flip over onto your stomach and use a wall to press into frog pose which will help open your hips and inner thighs.Breath into your stretches: breathing is key to getting your splits. You should only be stretching deep enough that you can still breath fully in through your nose and out through your mouth. Much of flexibility is relaxing the mind with breathing.Again, be consistent with these tips and you will progress to your splits. Don’t set a time limit. Just keep working towards them.

How to get the splits down in a week?

I'm on winter break, so I have all week--and I'm willing to push myself until I get it done. What is the best method to be able to do the splits within a week?

How do I get your splits ALL the way down?

Here are some stretches to help you work on your splits, flexiblity can be gained as you age, it just takes a little longer. :)

For the straddle--lay on your back with your butt against the wall. Extend your legs up the wall and then let the fall into the straddle stretch, gravity will help pull your legs down. Hold as long as you can. Repeat a few times.

For the other splits--lay on your back, bring a leg into your chest, hold a few seconds, then extend it. Grab your leg and try to pull it as close to you as you can and hold it, repeat a couple of timew bending the knee and extending it. On the last extend, while holding your leg, roll over into the splits. Repeat on the other leg.

These 2 will need another person to help you---stand against a wall, lift your leg, have your friend lift it as high as they can. And hold it as long as you can. Both knees should be straight. The goal is to touch the wall with your foot (I could do it 20 years ago and now I'm back to with a foot of the wall after 3 years of dance and I'm 33 so flexiblity can still be gained as you age) Repeat with other leg.

Next lay on the ground and have your friend push your extended leg towards the ground. Same idea as the stretch above, but it works the muscles in a slighty different way since you are in a different position.

Make sure that you really work both sides as evenly as you can. I never really worked the left leg and it's no where near as flexible as my right. I have had my right split for about 20 years, even when I wasn't exercising I could still do it. I never had my left they were about a foot over the ground, now its about 3 inches off the ground. Keep working and you'll get them.

Calf raises, squats, lunges, thrusts will all help

How long did it take you to get your splits?

I started stretching daily when I was 14, however I've always been pretty naturally flexible. I stretch my hamstrings by doing the toe touch for each leg separately while sitting down. I usually sit like that for about 5 minutes, but it's not necessary if you don't want to. I also sat in the butterfly stretch; it's kinda like criss-cross applesauce but you touch the soles of your feet together and push your knees down until they touch the floor. This can be a bit painful if you aren't very flexible, so just push them down as much as you can. Once they start touching the floor, try leaning your torso forward to really stretch your hip flexors. This is what will help you get your straddle split. Another stretch I do is sit and put my legs in a V shape. I stretch them as far apart as possible and then lean forward. You might wanna do this in front of a dresser or something heavy and you can grab onto it to help pull yourself down. As you get more flexible, you'll be able to get your legs further apart and your torso closer to the ground.
Doing this just about daily, it took me about a year to get my right front split, a year and a half to get my left split, and just over two years to get my straddle. What's really going to help is dedication. I noticed that even not stretching for a week made my legs more stiff, so it's really within your best interest to stretch as much as possible. You don't have to do it daily, but try to make up a routine of when you're going to stretch and for how long. Keep in mind that stretching each leg for 10 seconds isn't going to get you your splits very fast, but you don't have to sit like that for 10 minutes either. Find what works best for you.
Good luck and try not to get discouraged! You'll get it someday!

How to get the last inch in splits?

This might sound weird, but I think I know the problem. The same thing happened to me and I realized I wasn't going all the way down because I was putting my fists on the ground (from how much it hurt lol) . It kept me from sliding further. So I put my arms horizontally in the air (making at T) and leaned back and BAM. I touched the floor. Now I can do the splits! Hope this helped :)

How to get the last few inches in my splits?

I'm currently about 3 inches off the ground on my right splits and 4 inches on my left splits and about 6 inches off the ground in my center splits. In my right and left splits, it seems like everything is touching the ground but my groin. I use resistance stretching for my hamstrings (It helps a lot) and I do stretching for a good 30 minutes and do a little more during my splits. I get warmed up by taking a shower or by dancing a few minutes before stretching. I've been stretching for my splits for about two months now (started at about a foot off the ground on right/left splits; my center splits could barely make a 90 degree angle lol) and my goal is to be on the ground (without having to stretch for an hour or have to be really warm) by April. My dance school is having auditions for their company teams in April and I want to be flexible enough to learn the techniques needed for the audition.

First of all, is it possible to be able to get into splits after about 15 minutes of stretching and to get into splits comfortably I the time frame of a month? Also, what can I do to get these last few inches? What can I do to get some progress in my center splits specifically? Finally, is doing over splits safe if I'm not in complete splits yet?

All answers will be greatly appreciated :)

How long should it take to get your splits? What stretches should I do?

Side splits or scissor splits?Side splits are virtually impossible after puberty if you have never had them before.Scissor splits- anyone and everyone can achieve. The important things to remember when increasing your flexibility are:Stretch every day.Stretch to the point of severe discomfort, but NOT pain.Stretch EVERY DAY.Keep your hips straight. Do them in front of a mirror. When you place your hands on your hips they should be at the same height and pointed forward.Splits have a number of components mainly hip flexor and hamstring flexibility. The best stretches target these two.The best stretch for splits is known as over splits. Even if you can’t get down very far pile some 5cm mats - 2 or 3 and place your front foot on that. Attempt the splits, let gravity do its thing. Keep this up til you are flat on the ground and you will have beautiful splits.

Is it possible to do the splits in your late 20s if you have never done it before?

Here's my personal experience.I started training martial arts since 16, and for 13 years I trained hard, but could never do the splits.  I've tried flexibility training from ballet, different types of martial arts (Chinese and Korean), ISO (PNF), Russian military, pole dancing, cheer leading...  Researched all of them, tried all of them, even injured myself in the process.  I couldn't do it.  I dedicated an hour each day to do a full set of warmup, light stretches, kicks, long stretches, and nothing seemed to work.  Last year (age 29), I changed my approach near the end of the year and made flexibility a lifestyle.  After work when I'm at home, I try to maximize my stretching (even if it is just passive stretching, and holding).  When I'm watching TV, I'm sitting in a stretch.  When I'm reading, I'm sitting in a stretch.  When I'm memorizing vocabs of a foreign language, I'm sitting in a stretch.  Between my body weight sets (e.g. pushups, situps), I'm resting in a split.  Sometimes even when friends come over for drinks, I would sit in the splits.  It's not about "I spent 20 minutes stretching today," it was more about a "stretching is life."One month, I got my front splits down.  Still working on center splits.  Now, what does that mean?  Who knows.  Maybe I had the wrong mindset, or maybe I had the wrong training method, or maybe I finally accumulated enough "time" to make it happen.  But, I think it would be difficult to find someone less flexible than me (if you are not physically incapable of reaching splits).  On a side note, this is probably the best book I read on splits -Stretching Scientificallyhttp://www.amazon.com/Stretching-Scientifically-Guide-Flexibility-Training/dp/0940149451/ref=pd_sim_b_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=0XAVRGXGX5TD3A2QQ07VFinally, there is a tremendous amount of [old people] Taichi practitioners in Asia.  These people never trained Taichi prior, but after they retired from the workforce they had nothing else better to do *ahem*.  Every morning, they would go to the park to train and stretch.  Often times you see them put their leg up against a bar (in a stretch) and just chat with their friends and pass time.  Many of them eventually attain the splits.  If a retired 65 year old can do it, you're too young to give up trying.
