How To Make A Half Hot Half Switched Outlet

How do you make an electrical outlet sync with the switch?

I assume that only one of the two receptacles in each outlet
was switch controlled. (Common practice, called half switched.)
If you look at those receptacles, you will see a little tab
connecting the two screw terminals on the 'line' side, (smaller slot).
(Black or Red wires will be connected here if you did it right.)
On the receptacles that were 'half switched' you will have
two wires connected on this side.
Those tabs connect the two outlets (top & bottom), together so
that whether the switch controlling the second wire is open
or closed, both outlets are always powered.
Turn off the power at the panel. (Be damn sure it's off, plug
a lamp into each outlet before you start work on it.)
With a pliers break off the tabs on the line side of the
half switched outlets, (those with two 'line connections).
Do this only with outlets that were supposed to be half switch controlled. Sometimes 'power through' connections are made
at the outlet terminals. It's not good practice, but often done.
Your switches should then work as they did before if you reconnected
the wires right.

(Betcha a nickel you switched top for bottom on at least one.)

How do I make a switched half hot outlet all hot?

easiest way to conquer this..turn off the breaker that supplies the power..get a new outlet..only hook up the black and white..terminate the red wire by capping it off..the red should be a traveler from the switch...or you can hook a jumper wire from the black side of the screw to the screw on the same side that has no wire...

How do you wire a switched outlet?

In principle, a switched outlet is not much different from wiring a switched light. In a switched light, I agree with Loring that you may want to put the switch on the hot side preferably. However, a switched outlet tends to have the outlet is connected to the side of power source (such as the circuit breaker which controls the outlet). In a switched outlet, there are two types. Both receptacles are controlled by a switchOnly one receptacle is controlled by a switch with the other receptacle hot (or powered up) all the time.Assuming that you are interested in an outlet which is controlled by a switch from one location (the simplest to wire). The switch to use is determined by the number of locations from which the outlet is controlled, as shown belowControlled from one location only: Single-pole single-throw switch (SPST)Controlled from two locations: Single-pole double-throw switch (SPDT, aka 3-way switch)Controlled from more than two locations: May consider using a relayFor more details about the principles of multi-way switching , please, refer to Multiway switching - WikipediaA very good description of wiring a switched outlet and related topics, including half-hot receptacle, I would like to recommend the following.A switched outlet:A switched light, controlled from one locationAn outlet (always hot) and a switched lightI have done a fair amount of this sort of things as a DIY home owner. However, if you want to fish new wiring through an existing wall or through an attic, it will be a lot of work. All the best

How do I disconnect a light switch from an outlet?

Check the outlet carefully. Does the switch control both parts of the outlet or only one part? The usual circuit is to control one half of the outlet while the other half is always hot. To accomplish this the jumper on the side of the outlet is removed. A small piece of wire can replace the jumper and the switch leg can be made safe in the outlet with a wire nut. If the switch controls both parts of the outlet then the wire to the outlet must be identified and moved from the load side of the switch to the line side while the lights are left on the load side of the switch. If you do not understand these instructions contact a qualified professional electrician to do the work. If all goes well it is about a 1/2 hour job including set up and departure. If there are other problems the time factor is unknown.

Power switch and wall outlet in rental apartment?

So I have recently moved into a rental apartment. In the bedroom I have a light switch but there is no overhead light in the room. I had a tv plugged in and one time it did turn off my tv when turning the lightswitch off. So I plugged in a lamp in the exact same outlet and have not gotten it to work sense. The lamp still works even when the light switch is off. Just wondering if there s some trick to make this work. There are several "unknown" lightswitches throughout the apartment that I would like to begin using.

Can I control a GFCI outlet with a switch?

You would have to install a GFI breaker , you would go from the breaker to the switch and then to a regular plug and this will work or you could put a GFI plug before the switch from the load side of GFI plug to switch and then a regualr plug ( pay attention to the GFI plug one set of screws is line and one set is load , line are wires coming from power source and load are wires coming from switch ,plug

How do I disable an outlet switch and keep the outlet on at all times?

The Electrician gave you good instructions IF the outlet is 1/2 hot and 1/2 switched. IF it is completely switched you will need to do one of the following.
A) look for another (black or maybe red) wire passing through the box where the receptacle is. If so, remove and cap the existing wire (switch leg) and tap the other (constant) hot wire to feed the receptacle.
B) open up both 3-way switches. Take note of which wire is on the "dark" colored screw and which 2 are on the "yellow' colored screws. Those 2 are your travelers between the switches and you DO NOT want to loose track of them. For you purposes I would suggest removing all 3 wires (after labeling them!) and putting them under a red wire nut. Then tuck them back out of harms way and reinstall the switch. Repeat at the other location. Ahh, it goes without saying Label the wires at the other switch ALSO! Mixing up the location of the wires on a 3-way will result in the switching not working correctly and you'll be back asking how to fix that problem. Much easier to label them first!
Good luck.
