How To Make A Room Cooler

How do I cool a hot dorm room?

Hi, I'm currently a rutgers student and my first year I lived in a dorm that was like yours. It was always very hot unless you opened the window. I didn't have a crime issue like you (I was on the 3rd floor and it would be a lot of work to break in the window) but I had a room mate who would be cold on anything below 80. A fan isn't much help when its that hot but it does take the edge off at least. Also if you and your room mate (if you have) can agree on it, you can get an a/c although that is costly and probably against school policy.
Other than that you can open your window while you are awake and in your room to keep it cooler. Or if that isn't enough, I would talk to the housing deptarment at your school, 85 is too hot and I know it makes life diffcult. Maybe you can get them to lower the tempurature or to put those bars over your window so even with the window open, no one can get in.

Also if you have a heating unit, check if you have any control over it. The one we had, had a door on the top which hide some controls. Although they never really worked they let us select how fast the fan was or to turn thefan off completely. Still with it off there was some heat but not as bad as with it on.

Beside that there isn't much you can do. You are restricted by their policies and by not having a useable window.

How Can I Make My Room more cooler?

I have the same problem.
First, starting with your bed, make sure you have thin, cotton sheets. Nothing thick, silky, satiny, etc. All you need are cotton sheets and pillow cases, no blankets!
Second, wear as little as possible to bed (even if it includes being naked). If you're someone who likes to be covered, use a sheet (if you're naked), if not, just wear shorts or shorts/tank if you are a girl. Wear thin clothes, not thick!
Third, if you have a window fan, BLOW IT OUT. Make sure that the air is BLOWING OUT. This keeps warm air from coming in, but also tries to take some out of the room. If the temperature is cooler at night and is LOWER than the temperature of your room by at least four degrees, then you can have the air blow in. But after you wake up, turn the air to face OUTSIDE.

If you have a floor fan, use this, too! You can also keep a small bucket of cold ice water near your bed and use a wash rag to place on your head or stomach.

If you have a ceiling fan, USE IT.

How can I make my room cooler?

If your room has a terrace on top of it, try to reduce the duration and amount of direct sunlight falling on the roof during the day. You could try getting those terracotta bricks or tiles if you've any lying about and cover the exposed area. Water them regularly if you can. Perhaps a few potted plants could be kept here and there as well. If nothing, just watering the terrace in the evenings once or twice would cool down the roof considerably so that the fan doesn't blow blast-furnace kinda air into your face on evenings and nights. Suspend a wet towel somewhere behind the pedestal fan and let it blow air mixed with tiny droplets. My two cents. These might serve to reduce the heat somewhat, but I join you in wishing the monsoon comes in soon :)

Does a fan make a room cooler or hotter?

Fan motors produce heat, the heat is then usually distributed into the room. When designing air conditioning systems that heat is actually calculated as part of the overall load. With small fans with small motors the heat is fairly minimal. The only thing a fan does is move heat from one place to another while adding its own heat into the equation. When a person is trying to cool off with a fan it is only removing heat from a person’s skin and moving it away. So in theory with a person and a fan trapped in a room where no heat can escape or enter, that room would get hotter and hotter. The person and the fan are both giving off heat and the heat has nowhere to go. In typical settings the heat is negligible and it will dissipate. The evaporative effect usually far outweighs the minimal heat being produced. Fans used to cool people should not be left running unless there are people in the room to be cooled, otherwise the fan is heating the room slightly for absolutely no reason.

How to make room cooler without using A/C?

i live in a 2 BR apartment that is east facing. in the morning, the sun comes in and heats up the apartment extremely fast. we HAVE central AC and it works fine, but it costs too much to run. I live in San Diego where it is hot pretty much every day, and rarely do we get a break from that. today its going to reach 80F, which means it will be about 85F in my apartment. How to I make it cooler in at least my bedroom? I have a window fan running all night, and all morning, but the blinds I use are not very effective (they are the kind of blinds that are plastic slits that slide horizontally). I was thinking of using aluminum foil and trying to block out all of the heat and light. Will that work if i only use it in my bedroom? What are some other tips. and please dont make stupid suggestions like "buy some more fans", and p.s., I already know about the bowl of ice in front of a fan trick. the reason i dont use that is bc i dont have any ice. thank you! :)

How do I make my room feel cooler during summer?

My room really gets hot at daytime and even at nighttime during summer. I only have two windows that doesn't provide enough ventilation. I also prefer not to keep the door open since I don't want others to snoop around. Any ideas?

How to cool down dorm room?

Hey there!
I know what you're going through, it wasn't long ago I was in the same situation.
You can:
1) Get a small fan that you can clip to your bunk... like these:http://www0.epinions.com/Electric_Fans--...
they are available at bed bath and beyond, target, wal mart and other stores with college departments this season.
2) what I found helps tremendously is to get those box fans that easily sit over a window. It helps pull cool air in at night, so there just won't be warm air circulating.
http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=pr...
they are relatively cheap as well, and you can also find these at a variety of stores.
3) drink lots of water, it will help cool you down.
4) wear light cotton clothes, so you're body is able to "breathe"
5) and take a nice cold shower before bed.

good luck!

How can I cool my room in the summer without an AC? I’m in Chennai, India.

Apart from a lot of good answers here, I would suggest adding passive cooling. If you’ve seen old houses, they’ve usually had a high roof, and 2 to 3 ventilation holes just below the roof. These holes are effective even in the concrete buildings we construct today.About 0.5 to 1 feet below the concrete roof, have 3 horizontal holes on the wall. The holes can be about 2 to 2.5 inches in diameter and should be slightly slanting downwards towards the outside to ensure rainwater doesn’t enter inside. You can fit PVC pipes on these, and use a mosquito net on both sides to prevent mosquitos and all the fear about reptiles entering house using the holes. As the room gets hot, the hot air would move up and go out of the room via the ventilation holes. Cool air would automatically enter from the door / window / other places near the floor.Including passive cooling, here are a few things that could be done. Just summarising here, some could be a repeat of other good answers.Heat reflective white paint on the roof would reflect the light and cool a few degrees (Cost: 2000 to 5000 INR)Passive ventilation would send hot air out of home . Also keep opposite side windows / doors open to encourage cross ventilation and air-flow (Cost: < 500 INR ).Tree / Green foliage covering side walls could reduce the heat passing through further (Cost: <500 INR, takes time though)Use some indoor plants. The plants use water to grow, and they evaporate the water through a evo-transpiration process. This could result in some cooling (Cost < 1000 INR)Use evaporative cooling as others suggested, by wetting a cloth and placing it near a window through which air could come in. (Cost : 0)

If I put a dark sheet over my window, will that make my room cooler???

I stay in the bonus room over the garage, so my room is always hotter than the rest of the house in the summer, and colder in the winter. The cold I can deal with. I have recently bought a good amount of electronics, so now my room is hotter than ever. A window ac unit is out of the question, not allowed by neighborhood covenants. I can't afford a one room ac unit at the moment, plus I hear it will send the electric bill through the roof. I already have 2 fans, and sleep in as little as possible (nothing). Because of this, and other factors, leaving the door open at night is also out of the question. I am farthest from the ac, but it blows pretty well, I just have all these electronics ( big tv, surround sound, comp, Xbox 360) putting out all kinds of heat. I guess I could read a book to stay cool, but c'mon thats not a fix. I was wondering if putting a plastic sheet, regular sheet, something to cover the window would help any. Any other suggestions are also welcome. Thanks!
