How To Make Messy Curls On African American Hair

How do I straighten my kinky-curly African-American hair to look nice without breaking and growth?

Hi,I don't like chemically relaxing kinky-curly hair OR any hair type. Yes, I have done it and have received relaxers myself. The hair does not like it. Yes, the breakage is a problem. The chemicals are too strong and abrasive. Long term use is questionable externally and internally.I don't have a "true" natural solution yet. But working on it. If you have to use sometime use the better of the evils. Better of the evils means "mildest, low on the pH scale and least amount of damage. Think temporary treatments.Your Image Styling Advocate,SHEVA.NYC

How long should my hair be for S curl?

Your hair is more than long enough. You will have to cut it to get that mohawk look , I'm guessing 3-4 inches off the top. There are so many texturizers the key is application. If u let the wrong person put it on you will have a relaxed look ( straight hair). Make sure when the texturizer is applied u don't comb it through. Rinse it out well and neutralize afterwards. Also depending on your texture, I wouldn't leave it on more than 5-7 mins.

How can I keep my natural hair curly when it dries?

Okay, so I’m assuming your hair type is somewhere in the 4a-4c range. This is because the hair type is coily and isn’t curly in fact. It has a definite curl pattern when wet, but without the right products and proper moisture technique, it will dry out and lack definition. My hair in the front and back is 4a. The rest is a looser curl, 3c. If I don’t moisturize properly, my looser curls will still have some shape but my tight coils have no definition at all, what you referred to as puffy. What I do to combat this is moisturize often. Here is my regimen. Every Sunday, I co-wash my hair. I make sure it is all detangled. Then, I step out of the shower and part my hair into 4 sections. I always spray my hair with water from my water bottle. Making sure the hair is very moist, I’ll take my Shea Moisture Curl Milk and rake my fingers through my hair, making sure it is distributed well and the curls start to bounce and get shiny. Next, you need to add a styler. This keeps the shape of the curl or coil and makes it last longer. Without it, your style won’t last past 1 day and you will have to redo it. My styler of choice is either eco styler gel in olive oil or my Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Cream. As of late, it has been a life saver. I do the same method as stated above and leave my hair alone until it is completely dry. After it is, I’m left with a full head a beautiful, bouncy curls. This regimen can last for 1–2 weeks.Check out my YouTube channel where I actually demonstrate what I’ve just said above for a visual:)>>> The perfect wash "N" go <<<

Is having a curly hair a blessing or a curse?

I suppose it depends on the texture. If it falls in attractive, smooth curls, it's adorable. If it just frizzes, that's a real curse.

A friend of mine had long curly hair and she just washed it and shook her head, and when it was dry, picked at it a little. She looked like a model! It was gorgeous.

Another friend had the standard frizzies, and used to cry when she brushed it. She said she understood how the white queen in Through the Looking Glass could lose her brush in her hair! I think if that was mine, I'd cut it real short.

How do you bring life back to dry, damaged, curly hair?

The answer to all this problem is "moisture moisture moisture". Curly hair is naturally dry hair so you have to keep feeding them with moisture regularly. Here are few things you can follow to keep it healthy and manageable.Keep your  hair well moisturized using good products that are silicone and sulfate free. Sulfates are detergents you find in shampoos and are a bit harsh for curly hair. It strips hair off of its natural oil and leaves it very dry. Silicone creates a film on hair and is hard to remove from hair. Heavy use of silicone products leads to build up on hair which do not let the moisture penetrate the hair. Due to this your hair gets dry over a period of time and loses its curl shape as well. Do not use any hair serum as these contains heavy silicone in more concentration. Use deep conditioning treatments at least once in a week. Choose products that has humectants in it for deep conditioning. Humectants absorb water and penetrate hair and retain moisture inside the hair.  Here are some homemade recipes that you can follow All natural home-made hair masks - Right RingletsUse cold pressed coconut oil to moisturize your hair and try to keep it overnight. Do not use heat on hair. Heat damages your hair cuticles and when cuticles are damaged then it becomes hard for hair to retain moisture as your inner layer is exposed and loses moisture fast.Protect your hair in the sun, wear cap or scarves. Do not use comb on dry hair as it might lead to breakage. Always detangle your hair in the shower after applying a rinse off conditioner. After wash, apply small amount of oil or whipped shea butter on hair after applying a leave-in conditioner. It helps to coat hair and prevent it to lose moisture very fast. How did Michael Jackson get his hair curly?

If you mean the curls in the picture, that was a fashion back in the day called Jheri curlsThe Jheri curl (often spelled Jerry curl or Jeri Curl) is a permed hairstyle that was popular among African Americans during the 1980s. Invented by the hairdresser Jheri Redding, the Jheri curl gave the wearer a glossy, loosely curled look

Does Curly or Straight hair make you look OLDER? 10 Easy Points?

Well, I have really curly hair because I'm African American, Hispanic and Middle Eastern. My hair is black and it goes all the way down my back. I love my hair, I just love it! I always wear my hair how it is naturally, I don't starighten it. Sometimes I straighten my bangs, but not often because I don't want to damage my hair. I've always been told that I'm pretty and that I look younger than I am (15). Straight hair makes people look older, always. But why would you want to look older anyway? Lol.

Is nappy hair "extremely curly hair" or is nappy hair "hair that is not taken good care of"?

I always thought it was hair not taken good care of and that it was a racist term used by whites back during slavery to describe African American hair. So many people(blacks included) think that nappy and black hair are the same or that nappy hair is curly hair. Im pretty sure thats not right. Nappy hair is messy, unkept hair. I'm also tired of people(ALOT of blacks included) saying that people with curly, natural hair need a perm. I dont have a perm and never had one because I am willing to accept my own traits. I dont want to permanately straighten my hair with toxic chemicals that think your hair out just to look like a white girl or just to "fit in" and look exactly like everyone else(im 15 btw). I am who I am and some people need to realize that. We all know that the only reason you black girls have perms is because society is telling you that natural curly hair is not attractive. Some of you say its only because you think that it is easier to manage. You just dont know how to deal with natural hair, its actually not that hard. Deep down you know you were pressured. But hey, if a black woman wants straight hair, its not a problem with me, just stop looking down on your own natural curly hair as if god makes mistakes please.

(If you are black and dont have naturally curly hair, I'm obviously not talking to or about you because you hopefully dont look down on curly hair)

Which race/ethnicities tend to have certain hair textures (curly, straight, wavy hair)?

There isnt many races/ethnicities that is associated with a certain hairstyle with one big exception of Sub-Saharan Africans, who almost always have tightly curled hair. I have also noticed levantine arabs as well as italians and greeks are more likely to have curly hair than most other people. East asians tend to almost always have straight hair, but as for everyone else it's pretty mixed, with hair getting more frequently straight the further north you go in europe, but still a balanced mix.
