How To Make School Project Report On Adulterants

Project on food adulteration?

what??

How do you check for the presence of adulterants in food products in daily household?

About the only tests a householder can do are visual, scent, taste, and solubility. You can sometimes see when powdered products like spices have been mixed with fillers to make it seem like there is more spice than there is. Sometimes things that should dissolve don’t dissolve properly. Sometimes you can smell the adulturants, sometimes you can taste them, like when you get chicory in coffee.Other than that you need the ability to do chemical testing because things like glycol in wine (scandal 1985, 1986) or melamine in baby formulas (scandal 2008) are not easily detected by simple tests.

Cool topics for chemistry research project?

How about an experiment using gravimetric analysis? It's a fairly simple technique used in analytical chemistry at the college level (I studied it my junior year at Stanford). Your teacher will probably be impressed, and you'll learn some useful chemistry.

The basic concept behind gravimetric analysis is that you can determine how much analyte you have in a sample by reacting it with something, weighing the product, and then using stoichiometry to calculate how much analyte you would need to make the final product.

More specifically, lets say that you decided to measure the amount of salt in various brands of pickle brine. The first step of your experiment would be the sample preparation. I would recommend using filtration to remove solid matter from the brine. Next, you would add silver nitrate to the brine, which would form a silver chloride precipitate. Finally, you would weigh the silver chloride precipitate, and calculate the amount of choride ion originally in the solution based on the amount of product.

You would probably want to do at least three trials for each sample, and you would also want to have positive and negative controls. Also, for a really complete report you should calculate averages and standard deviations for each sample, and include uncertainty limits. I can send you a good source on statistics and calculation of uncertainty if you're interested.

I've only given a general sketch of the experiment here. If this sounds like something you'd like to do, email me at stevens_donald@yahoo.com and I can send you the procedure we used at Stanford.

What are the harmful effects of adulteration of food stuffs?

Tea(Used tea leaves processed and coloured) causes Liver disorder.
Sugar (Chalk powder Stomach) - Disorder
Chilli powder( Brick powder, saw dust) causes Stomach problems
Honey (Molasses sugar (sugar plus water) causes Stomach disorder
this are just some harmful effect of adulteration of food stuffs.
Hope this helps:D

What are some of the shocking food adulteration cases in India?

First comes.. Synthetic milk manufacturing!the process involves using urea, sodium sulfate, glucose or maltose.. in general! The ingredients that go in to the making of synthetic milk are calculated in such a way that the fat and SNF percentage is similar to milk. Hence it easily passes the platform tests carried out at the village level dairy co-operative society (fat and lactometer reading etc.) but from the health point of view of the consumers, it is highly dangerous. The taste is highly objectionable.According to the Delhi Health department estimates, 100,000 litres of synthetic milk and 30 tonnes of thickened milk (khoya) is being manufactured everyday in the city. The Prevention of Food Adulteration department of the Delhi government found , in a single day of raids, that 40 out of 229 samples of milk sold in the city was adulterated by chalk, urea, soap and other whiteners. \There are many kids who fell sick after having the synthetic milk!and synthetic milk is not like water mixed with natural milk for dilution. it is a factory made product.!- cross check the values before presentationThe Technology of Synthetic Milk - article by menaka gandhiA health hazard to human lives - this has good history of synthetic milk in India.(though not relevant.. a person has invented a equipment. to detect the level adulteration in milk .. which common man can access.. to check the quality of milk supplied to your home)second ofcourse I believe is fruits ripening. techniques..!Think mangoes! all the major cities kolkata, Hyderabad, Delhi,, have a big market of carbide ripened mangoes.!and bananas they use huge chemicals to turn them yellow. Why you should never set fire to a box of mangoes Calcium carbide used for ripening mangoes in Delhi Next time you buy mangoes, think of gas welding chemical HC directive on chemical ripening of fruits
