How To Memorize Anything

What should I do if I can't memorize anything?

Memorization is a study tool. There is no college major that does not require you to memorize anything. Even if you choose Communications you will have to memorize all the different sources, types, functions, and styles of communication and if you choose English you will have to memorize all the different writing styles and characteristics of those styles. Not to mention if you work in the business realm of Communications or English you will need to know the business rules. Keep in mind that memorization is just repetition! You can better memorize something by doing it repeatedly and/or saying it repeatedly. You should consider a major that most interests you, that way it is something you can become passionate about and the memorization will follow. If you are still having trouble with memorization consider researching more study habits that can be just as effective as memorization. In conclusion, there is no major that does not require you to memorize things. Memorization is a study tool and is key to learning many aspects of life, as well as school. Consider looking up other ways to commit things to memory or effectively study. But don't let your dislike of memorization deter you from an enjoyable career or getting your degree! Hope this helps!

Please help! I can't seem to memorize anything anymore?

Sounds like you are under stress. When you are under stress, the brain releases chemicals which shut down both encoding and retrieval of data. Therefore, your brain releases chemicals which actually make learning much more difficult -on purpose (it's under stress, so it's getting ready for fight or flight, it thinks you need all your energy in your arms and legs and "reptile" part of your brain which doesn't think but just react). That is why cramming is really bad. It's also why you really need to learn over a longer period prior to the exam and get lots of sleep the on Exam Eve.

In order to learn at your brain's peak, and to test at your brain's peak, you need to sleep 7-9 hours each night, at the same bed time, consistently. You also need to ensure you take care of your physical body (no caffiene-fueled all-nighters). It's no big secret, just a universal truth.

HOWEVER, and this is important: if you have no external reason why your are having problems with cognition, then you need to see a neurologist IMMEDIATELY to rule out brain tumors, cancer, and other baddies. If he clears you of those, then you see a psychiatrist to rule out adult-onset mental disorders. With either of these, you need to take care of this NOW, before irreversable damage is done. Essentially, any time you have a change in cognition (like memory), that you cannot attribute to stressors, then you need to get checked out.

BTW: street drugs REALLY screw up your congitive abilities, even a year after you stop.
