How To Not Be Crabby And Groggy In The Afternoon

Why does one feel in a grumpy mood after an afternoon nap?

I think this varies from people to people. Usually an afternoon nap is preceded by lunch. In some countries this is the most important meal of the day. So the combination of a full or empty stomach, the degree of hotness or coldness of local weather could produce different nap results. In a warm climate country, such as Spain or Mexico, the midday nap called “siesta” is important to restore energies and avoid the peak of high temperatures. Generally people will feel good after the summer nap (and shower) and ready for work.A full stomach and alcoholic beverages might be the protagonists of grumpy moods and the nap is a mere appendage.

What can I do to avoid feeling sleepy in the afternoon?

Welcome to being a student!Pun aside, I can relate to your complaint as back in my high school years the afternoons where just painstakingly sleepy at times.Studying and internalizing notions can be an already demanding affair on its own and you need proper coping strategies on hand to keep well and happy.Sleep and food should be your top priorities together with your books.Do you have enough rest at night? Do you go to bed very late? Every person has different needs when it comes to sleep but generally it would be wise to get at least 8 hours of sleep per night. The best resting hours are the ones before midnight. You should also watch your diet as often this can have a great influence in one's energy levels. You might not be hungry or in a rush to allow yourself to have a proper breakfast. You should make a point to have a nutritious breakfast that provides you the right amounts of proteins/carbs/fats to get you through the morning. You could add in a mid morning snack to keep your energy running until lunch. Lunch is also important as you want to fuel up for the rest of your school day. Eat enough (don't skip lunch or swap it with snacks and coffee), eat healthy foods and foods that do not hinder your digestion but keep you satiated. The reason you feel tired after lunch could be due to the digestion (very simply put: your blood supply is directed towards your stomach rather than your brain). Sometimes high carbs or fatty meals can make you feel very sluggish and sleepy afterwards. You should also pay attention not to eat excessive amounts of sugar (carbs). When you consume high amounts of sugars (carbs) your insulin levels will spike in order to metabolize the sugar in your blood. Once insulin drops back you might feel what is called a sugar crash: fatigue, sluggishness, irritability and a need to have more sugars.Make thus sure that besides carbs you also get sufficient proteins and fats in your diet. I believe that most things available in a school's cafeteria is not going to help you to keep this balanced, so you will have to pick your meals smartly.A power nap could also do wonders if you have a chance to snooze off for 10 minutes or so. Or at least sit somewhere quiet and close your eyes for a while (the library could work).Good luck!

How can I shake off the grogginess after an afternoon nap?

The risk is that you sleep too long and so coming out leaves your mind groggy.Although it’s the last thing you want to do long-term, it’s a good idea to make sure you wake after about twenty minutes, so use an alarm if you need to. In time you won’t need it - you’ll tend to wake after twenty minutes out of habit.Even if you feel groggy when you are waking within twenty minutes, then keep going - it should stop happening after a while.Make sure that you are getting a full night’s sleep every day so that your system isn’t trying to catch up when you nap.Good luck.

What causes that awful feeling after waking up from an afternoon nap?

“What causes that awful feeling after waking up from an afternoon nap?”Hey, wonderful question.I have also always wondered what caused me to sometimes sleep so little and feel amazingly pumped and then sometimes sleep long and feel like a piece of shit… Your question motivated me to research about this topic in depth. Well, that is the same with sleeping. We should always aim at waking up before the first stage of our sleep. This is generally 10–20 minutes. My husband gets up at noon or later on weekends and is nasty and and mean to me if I try to wake him up?

My husband will sleep until noon on our weekends (Tuesday and Wednesday), or even one or two in the afternoon. If I try to wake him up early he is mean and nasty to me, and stays that way for at least an hour after he gets up. Then our whole day is shot, because not only is it two or three before I've made him breakfast and he's showered, but I'm cranky with him for the rest of the day, and he blames me for being cranky for what is left of the day. And his nasty is not just normal morning groggy. He will actually yell or curse at me, and has even swung at me. And he has always been the most gentle, kind person I know.

He does not get up extremely early during the week. He works Thursday and Friday 8:30am-7:00pm, Saturday 9:00am-6:00pm, Sunday 12:00pm-5:00pm, and Monday 10:30am-7:00pm. And Saturday is the only day he can't be late. On the days he works, he stays awake until around around one in the morning, playing video/computer games, and on our weekends, he goes to bed anywhere from one to four in the morning. I only work four days a week, but I work from 6:00am-2:00pm consistently. On the days that I have work in the morning, I go to bed around nine or ten. On days I don't work, I fall asleep between eleven and midnight. On those nights I usually fall asleep on the couch until he goes to bed, then we go into our bedroom together.

I don't expect him to go to bed with me on the weekdays (though it would be nice), but with him sleeping in so late, I feel like we don't even have weekends together. I don't want him up at the crack of dawn, somewhere between nine and ten would be nice. This is becoming a real problem, I feel like I'm living with a teenager and not another reasonable adult. I don't know how to fix it without sounding selfish or starting a fight. Can someone please help?

Why do I feel so groggy after napping?

I know from 50 years of napping EVERY DAY that the optimum length of time for a nap is 20 minutes. Any less, you’ll feel unrested; any more, you’ll feel groggy; but 20 minutes, you’ll feel you’ve had a full night’s sleep and you’ll wake up fresh. If you’re going to nap for longer, go for 90 minutes. We have a natural sleep cycle of 90 minute increments and this would complete a full cycle, and you won’t feel too bad. Any less and you’ll be somewhere in the middle and thus feel groggy. Why 20 minutes works for me, I don’t really know. Probably because I drop deeply asleep and naturally wake up AND get up at once. It works, and I love it!

Does anyone have experience with ear tubes? My son has to have them and I'm wondering what to expect.?

My son just had them put in three weeks ago. The surgery was over in a matter of about 10 minutes and we were able to go back with him in recovery. He was a little out of it. So, they let me rock him and give him a drink while we waited for him to come out of the anesthetic. He slept a lot during that day, but by the evening, he was back to his normal rowdy self :) We gave him tylenol for two days after the surgery just in case there was any soreness and the Dr. gave us ear drops to put in his ears for three days after the surgery. He healed up fine and seems to be in much better spirits now :) I know it is hard seeing your little guy go in for surgery...I cried, but it was over quickly and he is much better off for it!
