How To Open A Calcium Magnesium Bottle

Just opened a bottle of soft-gel magnesium supplement?

Let me help you,

If you bought the same bottle/brand/dosage/quantity and you are certain it did not smell like that before; then check the expiration. Magnesium has a metallic smell, nothing more. If you are taking the Nature-Made brand Magnesium soft gels (250mg), the sofgel itself has some smell to it. Different batches and handling of the bottle can vary in smell, but rest assured it doesn't mean its bad. if you are certain something is not right, take it back for exchange, and smell the new bottle right in the store.

On a side note : I hope you are taking Calcium with your daily Magnesium, it is Absolutely crucial to take them together!! Calcium inhibits your cells when your body goes through its daily routine, giving you energy, alertness...but once you are ready to rest Magnesium takes over the cell, putting you in recovery mode. Glad you are taking Magnesium, it is so important in daily life.

Is it unhealthy to take this much magnesium?

My jaw sometimes gets tight or even sore whenever I get stressed out and/or excited. Sometimes it begins to hurt for no reason at all? I've had a lot of problems with my TMJ for a while now, but it seems like only in the past 6+ months has it gotten to the point where it's sore without me having napped or ground my teeth. It's rarely a problem besides for when it prevents me from sleeping. I've talked to both my dentist and doctor about it, but they both kinda shrugged me off. I heard Magnesium can help relieve muscle discomfort, so I've been taking that if I feel any sort of stiffness or pain in my jaw, usually before bed. It seems to work fine, but I am worried about what could happen if I take too much?
They're 250 mg tablets, the bottle says to take one per day. I haven't gone over that yet, but what if it gets to a point where I might need to take more? Could anything potentially life threatening happen?

If water is just H2O, why does bottled water contain calcium, magnesium, sodium, etc.?

Water is a natural solvent — a property of the shape of the water molecule, which is polarized and tends to attract ions — and so any water that has not been distilled will contain trace elements of a broad range of ionized materials that it has picked up from its source. In fact, the ‘taste’ of water is largely due to dissolved materials. Distilled water often tastes flat and unappealing.Generally when we talk about ions in water we talk about the positively charged metallic ions like calcium, magnesium and sodium. I’m not sure why this is so, except to speculate that negative charges in water are usually carried by the hydroxyl molecule — [math]OH^-[/math] — because negative ions like chlorine and fluorine are highly reactive and either to precipitate out into solid salts or combine into diatomous elements like [math]F_2[/math] or [math]Cl_2[/math] and percolate out as gases. I’m sure a better chemist than I could provide a more knowledgeable answer.Salt water is an extreme case of this: it contains comparatively large concentrations of ionized particles, and tastes like it.

How long does it take Magnesium Citrate to work?

There is no universal rule that applies to everyone, but on average, it takes "several hours."
Because it varies from one person to another, it is best taken in the evening (when you are sure you are not going out any more), and then you may have to go to the bathroom any time during the night - or it may take as long as some time during the next day. The amount of water you drank with it is more than sufficient.

The only concern I would have with your comment above is that "you think" you are constipated, although yes, severe constipation can give you the type of symptoms you describe.
Hopefully you have looked into possible reasons why you are so severely constipated (high iron or calcium supplementation, lack of fiber...).

When calcium is dropped in water, it floats over the surface of the water. Why?

Calcium floats on water because when it reacts with water it forms calcium hydroxide and realeases hydrogen gas .Now this hydrogen gas released during the reaction gets attached to the surface of the metal means to the surface of calcium therefore it appears to float on water.

How does algae form in water bottles? What is algae?

Algae are a group of photosynthetic organisms, they are diverse group and can vary from single celled (microalgae) to multicellular forms (large seaweeds). Chlorella or single celled algae Giant Kelp or multicellular algae Bottled water is not sterilized water, they may contain minute levels of microbes along with other chemicals.  (Page on epa.gov)This is not necessarily bad, chemicals like calcium and magnesium are useful and add to taste. Also, contamination can occur during bottling, shipping and even during use. The water might contain microalgae, which need nutrient rich water and sunlight for survival and replication. (NRDC: Bottled Water)So, if the bottle is exposed to prolonged periods of sunlight, there is a good chance of seeing a rapid increase/accumulation of algae.

Bad tasting bottled water?

It seems to be mainly the Ozarka but I've had other ones taste this way too. They smell kind of like medicine once they sit out for a while. I buy the large fridge size from Ozarka and this last one has a strange tinny taste - kind of medicine like (hard to explain). This is spring water not like Dasani with the "filtered tap water".

Any thoughts or ideas what might cause this?

Thanks
