How to copy files from my mac hard drive to my WD Passport external hard drive?

I am a new Mac user so I might just be doing something wrong, but I cannot seem to copy files from my mac and paste them onto my hard drive (WD PAssport). I can read files from it and I can transfer them to my desktop but that is it, I cannot put anything onto it from my Mac. I just dont have the paste option when I right click and when I drag the files to my hard drive it just shows a little red circle with a line through.
