How To Pick Baby Names For Character

Are these names okay for these characters?

Okay, so I'm writing a television show based on a large family. Are these names good or do you have any other suggestions for A names that sound better with certain A names? ALL NAMES MUST HAVE A NAME STARTING WITH "A". Either tell me if they sound good together, or pick which ones sound good together and tell me the other ones that would sound good with them that you can come up with.

How are character names made up?

Heya.So there are various ways people come up with character names and an even bigger amount of people telling you how you should pick character names. Some say they should mean something, somehow related to the destiny of your character across the series.Well, that's all and good, and sometimes I do use that method. I love BabyNames.com - Baby Names & Meanings, Most Popular Names' advanced search when I’m picking character names. It lets me search for exactly what I want. (Not an add btw, just a tool I like)Other times, I see a name in a business, or on a street sign. That just calls out to me, creates a character on the spot.I also like Fantasy name generators, I tend to pick and choose pieces of those to build myself a pretty name. My most recent names of that method so far are; Oura-Aquil Kicas Qirries Kalerk-Derrihk. and her brother, Rirra-Uss Krikkeg Arral Kalerk-Derrihk. (Wow, Grammarly really hates those names). The generator didn’t give me the names like that, but I picked them and put them together to make a name I liked. (Also one’s I couldn’t figure out how to pronounce at first… whoops). One of my friends has a fun technique for making her character names. She slams her hands down on the keyboard and gets a series of letters. For example. idfpgis. So from that, she would add some vowels, tidy it up, and that's her characters name. I think she’d probably come up with a name like Fupios, or Dipsco. It gives her a lot of really fun, unique names that no one else tends to have. (Note, she does it much better than I do, so please ignore my poor attempts to explain). What I’ve found with character names, and what I try to remember, is that their parents had to pick those names, had to have a reason why they wanted to name their children that. Be it a family name passed down, or a prophecy of something great to come in the future. I tend to name my royals the names that their parents would want them to be like as a ruler. Victorious, wise, caring, etc.Hopefully, this answers your question.

For writers: how do you pick out last names for your characters?

I have no trouble coming up with first names, and I'm not asking for someone to come up with last names for me. I'm just curious as to how you come up with yours. I rack my brain every time I come up with a character trying to figure out their last name and have the hardest time.
It's not as hard for my main characters, their names sort of just appear, but my side characters, I have the hardest time.

Baby name game? (20 characters)?

1. Your name is _____ and right out of college, you marry your long time boyfriend ____. You get married in ______ and honeymoon in _____.

2. While on your honeymoon, you did a little too much. When you get back home 2 weeks later, you take a pregnancy test and you find out it’s a girl! Her first name reminds you of your honeymoon and her middle name begins with the first letter as your middle name.

3. 2 years later, your little girl isn’t so little anymore. You miss having a baby around, so you try for another one. But you don’t get one- you get three! Triplets! You find out you are having 2 girls and 1 boy. The girls’ first names begin with the first letter of your husband’s name and their middle names begin with the same letter as well (any letter). Your baby boy’s first name is a deceased family member’s, and his middle name begins with the letter B.

4. Your girl is 5 and your triplets are 3. They all beg you to get a dog, so you bring them all to the local pet shop, and they fall in love with the first dog they see. What’s its breed, gender, and what do your kids pick out for a name?

5. You and your husband leave the kids with your parents, and you take a trip to Europe for 2 weeks. Since you have some alone time, you have some fun again. Once you get home, you find out your pregnant again! You have a little baby boy 9 months later. His initials are KP.

8. You finally have the nice large family you've dreamt of! Name your family, including any pets.

If you want best answer, go on and tell me who your kids marry, and what their kids’ names are, if they have any!

How do I name my book character?

Pick names you like. I name my characters after versions of my friends' names (for example, Katie became Kathy). I also just have some names that I like, so I use those.
If you want to incorporate name meanings into the names, I would suggest using a baby name site and typing in a certain trait that describes your character and using that name. A great site to do this is: http://www.parents.com/baby-names/

Hope this helps you with your names~

If you were to name your child after a fictional character, which character would you choose?

My wife and I named our daughter Antonia after the character in Willa Cather’s “My Antonia”. We wanted a name that would combine both Greek and Bohemian cultures. We wanted a name that would fit our new little daughter, that by all evidence of her strong movements in the womb, was going to arrive on the scene full of strength and fortitude. The fictional character is the epitome of the human ability to adapt, survive and flourish. Antonia is a very well crafted female character, and perhaps the best crafted female character I have ever experienced, even though we never directly see her experiences; Her life is described to us through a male character. The book had a large impact on me when I read it as a teenager. My daughter is nearly 16 now. I don't think she has ever been embarrassed by the name. I still love Willa Cather and the character she created. I am not embarrassed by my pick either, even though it could be seen as superficial or as an annoying attempt to choose an intellectual name. The choice for me was at least a declaration of hope for myself: I hoped for the ability to help form a life that aspired to the qualities and values of a character I greatly admired in fiction. I hoped to be able to eschew my innate misogyny, learned from my society and upbringing, so that I might not get in the way of the development a beautiful, strong, smart woman who would be unfolding before me.I am very proud of my Antonia and the person she is becoming day by day. She is more than a fiction. She is more than I could have ever imagined when I chose the name.

Writers: how do you choose your character names?

Sometimes, the name just comes to me the minute I start thinking about the character. Other times I cycle through names as I write until I find a name I like. And then sometimes I try to match my character's personality to their name.

What about you?

Also, sometimes I intentially try to pick names that aren't seen too often. And ones of people that I know. <-Hardly do that.

Would you name your baby after a Harry Potter character?

I do love the Harry Potter series, and there are many good names in the books.
When Luna Lovegood was first introduced, I instantly fell in love with the name Luna and wanted to use it on my future daughter.
There are several other names including Hermione that I love from the books.
The Harry Potter fad will eventually die down soon, many people probably won't remember it within the next 5-10 years, so it will probably close the doors for teasing since newer generations won't know what Harry Potter is.
