How To Plasti Dip Rims With Lip

How do you paint your rims black?

In short, you can't paint chrome rims black. That means YOU can't do it.Chrome isn't paint. It is actually chromium- a metal- deposited onto it through a toxic and dangerous process.    To head you off at the pass, NEVER get fancy with a grinder or attempt to sand chrome as it will release fragments of the metal which will leach into you making you sick and probably kill you... maybe not right away, but eventually.   If you insist on painting on chrome you either have to first etch the surface with acid (like nitric or hydrochloric) to give the surface some tooth or you have to take the wheels to a chrome plater to have the plating removed. These processes are dangerous and/or expensive and in my opinion not worth the risk of dying.

How to plasti dip rims with lip?

I have style 5 bmw wheels on my car, and I want to plasti dip them a different color. I want to leave the lip chrome and just plasti dip the inside part, does anyone know how i'd go about that?

Will putting new tires on plasti dipped rims damage the paint?

Would really depend on the type of tire machine they used. many modern ones do not touch the face of the rim or face of the lip. Older ones would tear up the PD around the rim. You are going to have issues with hitting curbs more than tire changes. The PD does not last very long, expect touch ups. if you want a durable coating look into powder coating.

What is the best way to plasti dip a wheel black while leaving the chrome lip and not painting it? best type of tape? Paint dry time to peel?

Not sure of painting technique I need to use here. Worried that when i peel the tape off that it will rip the plasti dip. I've heard of the possibility of applying uick heavy coats then then removing the tape while the plasti dip is still wet. I'm a well experienced spray painter so I'm pretty good at masking and not creating drips. But I know I have tried peeling tape off wet paint and it left these blobs where the paint met the tape. I really really do not want to use a knife ha. Help me out painters and car enthusiast!

What is the best way to paint stock rims on a car?

okay so first off, your gunna need a primer whether your going with gloss or matte, i suggest gloss (my opinion) then take some index cards and stick them under the rim on top of the tire (cuts out alot of labor so you dont have to remove the tire) then cover the rest of the tire in shop towel or old t shirt be careful you dont have any exposed tire... so hit them with the primer two times at least, make sure you wait a while in between because spraying over wet primer with ruin them beyond repair... then hit it with the paint with a back and forth motion no circles, wait for it to dry completely in between coats or youll get air bubbles. then on the last coat check for any missing spots and wait till its dry then remove index cards and towel and with a thin paint or make up brush touch up the lip of the rim if needed. then put back on and your good to go! i use regular spray paint and primer from home depot or walmart for like 3-4 bucks a can. get at least two large cans you dont wanna run out... make sure you dont get the plasti dip spray paint cuz itll peel off on the high way or car wash... and i suggest a clear coat for gloss, hit the tires with the clear coat for a nice wet tire look that lasts for awhile. another thing if you got a bunch of time on your hands... spray your calibers red or blue with caliber paint from walmart... looks nice behind a black rim

What are some ways to repair a minor curb rash on rims?

You could spray on some Plasti dip to make the scratches less noticeable. If you have some time to spend, you could lightly sand the areas and repaint with black wheel paint. Be sure to mask off any areas you don’t want to paint!

How do you stop obsessing about rock chips on your new expensive car?

Not to get personal or rude, but I'd advise you to seek counseling. In a world where people frequently starve, families are separated by all manner of horror, poverty and corruption are rampant, etc., some scratches and dings on your car are small potatoes. Be glad that this is all you have to worry about. Now, stepping down from my soapbox...there's one magical cure for preventing most car damage: A good, heavy coat of wax, re-applied regularly. Wax is magical stuff - it stops most forms of incidental damage, and helps cushion against the heavier stuff (like rocks, wild swinging doors, etc.).Other tricks: Park far away from everyone. Don't follow other cars closely. Get a 3M "clear bra" on your vehicle's hood, front bumper, and valance. Don't park under trees (sap and bird droppings are bad, not to mention leaves that trap moisture up against your paint). Finally, keep a bottle of "detailer" spray in your car and a quality shammy, and hit whatever you see with the spray bottle ASAP. Even if it's a rock chip and the damage is done, it helps protect the paint. You can also research getting your vehicle wrapped or plasti-dipped - these coatings protect paint pretty well, at least if they're applied carefully. But mostly, I'd say you need something bigger to concern yourself with. Want to watch my kids for the week? :)

Is it possible to repair or hide cosmetic damage to car wheels/rims such as scrape marks from brushing the curb? How?

You could use something similar to plasti dip. But it's a project. You'd need to really really care. Or if you want an easier but still pricey solution, find stock wheels for your car on Craigslist that are in good shape. Realize they can be talked down to 200-300 easy for stock wheels. Have a tire shop install them for about 20 a tire. This all depends on what you want. Most cases you'll probably not want to spend time and money on it. But if you really care about it then it's time and money well spent. The other writers tip on nail polish sounds good depending on severity of curb rash. It'll last a while and be super easy and safe.

What type of paint would be best for painting steel wheels?

Thats quite easy and cheap to do:
You need literally walmart things to do this

2 sheets of 1800 sand, a can of primer, 2 cans of paint, and 1 can of acrylic will do just fine.

Wash the wheels with car shampoo, and while wet, sand them until they feel smooth enough
Dry them very wheel and apply the primer, abour 1/4th of can per wheel just to seal the old paint or the steel

Then leave it dry up for an hour (primer takes a lil longer than normal paint)

Then apply around 1/2 of a can of the color you want on each wheel (metallic black works wonders)

Let them dry for about 15 to 20 mins then apply the transparent acrylic can to seal the paint so it doesnt chip easily.

Another real good option is to buy 4 cans of plasti dip and apply them on it.

Balancing aluminum wheels?

sup,
i got my 2 front tires changed on my car today.
i was told by one shop that they are aluminum rims and they have to be balanced on the inside of the rim.
i took them to a different shop because they where a little cheaper.
so i get my car back and they removed the weight from the middle of the rim and used a clip weight on the wheel instead.
should they have done this????
