How do I prepare for a job interview at a funeral home?

I would try to get letters of recommendation from any past employers or teachers. Just being able to show them copies of old ones proves that you've done good work in the past. If you don't have enough work / school experience to show them that, then get something similar from any volunteer organization or activity that you have done. If you fed people through your church on Thanksgiving, then get the "organizer" of that activity to write something about you in a quick paragraph of a Word Document and make sure that activity is on your resume. Bring the letters and a copy of your resume to the interview in a professional looking binder.

When you interview, emphasize how school / those various activities in the past have prepared you to work at the funeral home. Use specifics relating to your job! For example, discuss some event where someone didn't use social intelligence and ended up offending someone with their communication. Give an example of when you are had to use that skill for an activity and explain how you did it correctly.

Be sure that you have a very calm, mellow, deliberate, and professional demeanor. Don't go in there with enthusiasm like you are selling girl scout cookies, since that's not the attitude they want to see in that environment. Be very calm, adult, under control, and confident about what you are doing. Make sure they know why this is the field you chose. You can tell them how much it meant to you when your grandma passed and the funeral home did a great job. Or you could tell the story of how the funeral home botched everything, and you got into the field because you never wanted anyone to have to go through that. :-P

Honestly, if you can focus on doing all of those things well, you will get the job.

As a side note, when they ask about hobbies / what kind of person I am, I always say that I am a little bit nerdy, and at the right moments, I try to be a bit funny without telling any jokes. It works well to lessen everyone's nerves and show that I am not afraid of them or the situation. Kill them with kindness and never doubt yourself!

What should I do to prepare for a job interview at a grocery store?

I would start by doing a lot of research into the position: the activities and responsibilities, Dierbergs' history and customer service philosophy, attributes of other people who have been hired for similar positions, etc. All this information will give you a good basis for sounding well informed while answering and asking questions in the interview. Next, I would use lists of common interview questions to formulate intelligent responses that align with the grocery store's objectives and needs. Here's a sample list from Monster.com:

In order to feel confident and prepared, make sure to practice your responses -- and responses to any other possible interview topics you can think of -- with another person, preferably someone who has experience with interviewing and hiring employees. Make sure to ask them for advice on how to improve afterward. Check out this article on mock interviews:

Lastly, just remember how you like to be treated when you go grocery shopping. I know I appreciate someone who is friendly, helpful, and seems to be enjoying their job. Concentrate on showing your potential employer that you know what they need and can do the job well!

Best of luck with interview!
