What happens to files you delete on a flash drive?

You can very often recover deleted pictures from a camera memory card or USB Memory stick. However, to increase the chances of being able to recover pictures after they have been deleted you must not save any new photos, files or data to it.

When you delete pictures (or any files) from a memory card or USB memory device the data itself isn't deleted, just the file system pointers that says where the data for those files is located. The area where the deleted picture data was stored is also now marked as free space so it is available to the system for any new files to be written there instead.

If and when that happens, then it is too late to recover your deleted pictures so it is very, very important that new pictures or files aren't saved to the memory card in the meantime.

One of the easiest ways to see if your deleted pictures can be recovered is to try some photo recovery software.

One tip is to try a demo version of a commercial product that will scan the memory card for deleted pictures and show you exactly what pictures can be recovered. At least that will show you if you can recover the deleted pictures or if it's too late already.

What happens to a file when you delete it off a flash drive?

The same answer applies for both a computer drive as well as a flash drive.  You delete the file, then for PC users empty the recycle bin.  The file is actually still in its original place, EXCEPT it's not readily viewable/accessible.  Instead the file index makes the sectors the file originally took up open for change and re-writing.  In short, the file can be recovered until another file writes over that original sector.  The bigger the file the more sectors is can reside inside, and the more files or larger the file(s) it will take to overwrite the original sectors. Think of it as a chalkboard in a classroom.  If I write something on the board and leave the classroom, the content remains on the board until someone comes behind me and changes it.  The information on the board is pointless to anyone else, but will remain until someone comes in and changes it.  I hope my analogy makes sense and makes it a little easier to understand.

How do I I make it so that files deleted from my SD card are sent to the recycle bin?

I have a Windows XP operating system, and I have noticed that when I delete files from my Maxtor external hard drive, they get sent to the recycle bin, but when I try to do the same with my SD card, it is, instead, deleted permanently. Is there any way to make it so that files from my SD card are sent to the recycle bin instead of being permanently deleted?

How to recover deleted files via command prompt in Windows XP machine?

IF, and it's a big if, your Windows XP machine happens to have the "Undelete" command, and you deleted it using Command Prompt, then it's possible to recover using that command, but most computers do not have Undelete, in which case you will need a third party program. A good free one is Restoration:

First off, stop doing stuff on your computer. Do not download to the hard drive, do not save programs, and only run what you have to. Download Restoration (or some other recovery program) to a flash drive or removable hard drive, install it on the drive, then run the program off of the removable drive, and have it save the files to the removable drive. Any changes you make to the computer's HDD will lower the chances of you successfully retrieving the files.

How do I lock down files on usb drive so recipent can view and print, but not delete files?

You have to use a software tool call MPTools to make the drive a non-erasable drive or at least partition part of it to be non-erasable. Unfortunately, this type of software is not widely available as it is issued by the mico-controller companies and have to be matched to the NAND flash. If you order flash drive in bulk from sellers like us you can ask this to be done. But this is not possible to do if you are trying to use a drive you purchase at retail locations. This locking method works on both PC and Macs.
